DOUBLE CHECK DETECTOR ASSEMBLY
Sizes 3 - 10
Function
The Double Check Detector Backflow Prevention Assembly shall protect against backflow by either back
pressure or backsiphonage from a cross-connection wherein a pollutant hazard exists plus detect and
record leaks and/or unauthorized use of water in fire service pipeline installations.
The complete backflow prevention assembly shall consist of a main line toggle lever double check valve
assembly, comprised of two independently acting, spring loaded, toggle lever check valves, a resilient
seated, tightly closing outside stem and yoke (OS&Y) shut-off valve located at each end of the assembly,
equipped with four properly located test cocks to facilitate field testing of the main line assembly, together
with a low flow-by-pass assembly, consisting of a low flow registration meter in series with and followed
by a smaller poppet check double check backflow prevention assembly, comprised of one bronze body
containing two independently acting, spring-loaded poppet check valves, a resilient seated, tightly closing
shut-off valve located at the outlet end of the assembly, equipped with three properly located test cocks to
facilitate field testing of the low flow by-pass poppet check double check valve assembly.
Should a backflow condition occur, both the main line toggle lever double check valve and the low flow
by-pass poppet check double check valve backflow prevention assemblies shall close drip tight, before a
pressure reversal can occur.
The spring loading and mechanical advantage of the inlet toggle lever check valve shall reduce the
supply pressure a pre-determined amount, ensuring that at low flows (leakage or unauthorized use of
water), the toggle lever check valves will remain closed, permitting the low flow only through the by-pass
poppet check valve assembly and ensuring registration on the low-flow registration meter.
Occurrence of leakage or the unauthorized use of water in the fire line or sprinkler system shall, due to
the low pressure loss at which the low flow by-pass poppet check double check valve assembly opens,
shall cause these low flows to pass through the by-pass assembly and be recorded on the low flow meter,
while the main line toggle lever double check valve assembly remains closed.
Should a fire demand be placed upon the system, the main line toggle lever double check valve assembly
shall open, allowing full flow to extinguish fires.
The pressure differential at which the main line toggle lever double check valve assembly opens shall be
approximately 5-8 psi higher than that at which the low flow by-pass poppet check double check valve
assembly opens. The crossover point at which flow through the main line toggle lever double check valve
assembly begins shall be approximately 10 gpm.
Tying of equipment into packages for the purpose of thwarting competition shall be considered to be in
non-compliance with these specifications. Manufacturers shall price items under different subsections or
sections separately.
Description of Main Line Toggle Lever Check Valve
The main line toggle lever check valves shall be comprised of individual cast iron bodies and covers,
enclosing spring-loaded, clapper-type checking members, hinged so as to seat on a machined bronze
seat, located in the vertical plane. The seat of each toggle lever check valve shall be a bronze ring,
machined to either thread into or be held in place by a number of screws, in the throat of each check
valve body. The design of the inlet check valve shall have a higher spring-load than the spring in the
outlet check valve. The body castings shall be flanged to accept standard shut-off valves.
The cover of each check valve shall contain a cast-in pocket for concentric loading of the check valve
spring, as well as the port for the air vent plug. As the cover cap screws are drawn down onto the top of
the check valve body, the check valve spring shall be given an initial loading, which shall control the static
pressure differential across the check valve.

Purchase Specification
The resilient synthetic rubber check valve disc shall have a rectangular cross-section and shall be held in
position in the disc retainer by means of the disc guide. The disc shall be contained on three and on-half
sides.
The toggle lever check valve shall be designed so that the mechanical advantage is maximum in the
closed position, when spring forces are relatively low. As the toggle lever opens to permit flow, the
mechanical advantage reduces rapidly, ensuring a very low pressure drop at rated flow.
The toggle lever check valve shall provide drip tight closure against a higher outlet pressure when there is
no flow, and drip tight closure at all times when outlet pressure exceeds inlet pressure.
The spring loading and mechanical advantage of each toggle lever check valve shall ensure that it will
hold at least 1 psi in direction of flow.
Pressure Class and End Detail of Toggle Lever Check Valves
The Double Check Detector Assembly is available in sizes 3 through 10.
The toggle lever check valve body shall be Class 150A with flanged ends, per ANSI B16.1 (Cast Iron).
Material of Toggle Lever Check Valves
The toggle lever check valve body and cover shall be cast iron, per ASTM A-126.
Trim shall be bronze, per ASTM B61/B62.
Disc of the toggle lever check valve shall be Buna-N synthetic rubber.
The interior of the cast iron toggle lever check valve bodies and covers shall be epoxy-coated to a
minimum thickness of 12 mils, and applied by the electro-fusion process.
The valve manufacturer shall warrant the valve to be free of defects in material and workmanship for a
period of three years from date of shipment, provided the backflow preventer is installed and used in
accordance with all applicable instructions.
Optional Features
The exterior of the cast iron toggle lever check valve bodies and covers, along with the interior and
exterior of the outside stem and yoke shut-off valves may be epoxy-coated to a minimum thickness of 12
mils, and shall be applied by the electro-fusion process, at additional charge. A Certificate of Holiday
testing to verify consistency of epoxy coating is available at additional charge.
Description of the By-Passed Poppet Check Valve
The poppet check valves shall be composed of one bronze body enclosing two spring-load check
members, oriented so as to seat on a machined bronze seat, located in the inclined plane. The seat of
each poppet check valve shall be a bronze ring, machined to thread into the throat of each check valve
body. The design of the inlet and outlet poppet check valves shall be the same. The body castings shall
be threaded to accept NPT threaded accessories.
The cover of each poppet check valve shall contain a cast-in spring guide for concentric loading of the
check valve spring, as well as the port for the air vent plug and a port for guiding the stem of the poppet
assembly. As the cover cap screws are drawn down onto the top of the poppet check valve body, the
check valve spring shall be given an initial loading, which shall control the static pressure differential
across the check valve.

Purchase Specification
The spring loading and mechanical advantage of both poppet check valves shall ensure that each will
hold at least 1 psi in direction of flow and will be drip tight in direction opposite to normal flow when
downstream pressure exceeds inlet pressure.
The resilient synthetic rubber check valve disc shall have a rectangular cross-section and shall be held in
position in the disc retainer by means of the disc guide. The disc shall be contained on three and one-half
sides.
Pressure Class and End Detail of Poppet Check Valve
The poppet check valve shall be 3/4 in size.
The poppet check valve body shall be class 150 with NPT threaded ends, per ANSI B16.15 (bronze).
Material of the Poppet Check Valve
The poppet check valve body and cover shall be bronze, per ASTM B61. Trim shall be Delrin, and bronze,
per ASTM B61.
The disc shall be Buna-N synthetic rubber.
