June 2013
Summary: World production in 2012/13 is estimated to rise 2 percent from the previous year to
a record 67.5 million metric tons. In the Northern Hemisphere, record crops in China more than
offset reductions in the EU and the United States whereas, production in the Southern
Hemisphere is virtually unchanged. Global trade is expected up marginally at a record 5.5
million tons. U.S. exports are estimated to gain 5 percent as strong demand coupled with tight
supplies in other key exporting countries bolster market opportunities.
Production in China is estimated 6 percent higher to a record 38.0 million tons attributed to
better horticultural practices, continued expansion in area, and favorable government incentives.
Consumption is expected to increase 5 percent due to rising demand for fresh fruits and
government efforts to promote a healthy diet. Exports are estimated to grow 9 percent to 1.1
million tons in response to
expanding demand from
Russia and nearby Asian
markets.

EU production is estimated
6 percent lower to 11.3
million tons on adverse
weather. Fresh
consumption is expected to
drop 10 percent, while
processed is slightly
higher. Exports are
virtually unchanged, but
the EU is still the worlds
largest exporter. On the
other hand, imports are
estimated 2 percent lower
to 515,000 tons on a
weaker Euro and rising
shipping costs.

U.S. apple production is estimated down 3 percent to 4.1 million tons on reduced output from the
frost-stricken Central and Eastern states. However, available supplies for fresh use increased on
gains in Washington State. Apples for processing are lowered. Exports are expected to grow 5
percent to 880,000 tons to meet stronger demand mainly from Canada and Mexico. Imports are
slightly lower as smaller supplies from Chile are partially by Argentina.
Turkeys production is estimated to rise 7 percent to a record 2.9 million tons on favorable
weather. Although area is virtually unchanged over the past five years, smaller orchards are
being replaced by larger and more efficient commercial plantations that grow new, premiumpriced varieties. Domestic consumption has also grown to a record.
Production in Argentina is estimated to expand 5 percent to 910,000 tons on favorable growing
conditions. However, some orchards are diverted to growing wine grapes and other more
profitable crops or sold for more lucrative development. Exports are expected to soar more than
20 percent to 160,000 tons in response to expanded demand from Russia.
Chiles production is estimated to fall 4 percent to 1.3 million tons due to frost followed by
drought that affected flowering and fruit development. As a result, exports are expected to
decrease 10 percent to 700,000 tons, most of which are shipped to the United States.
Production in Russia is estimated to jump 8 percent to 1.2 million tons, a return to the record
level three years ago, attributed to favorable government incentives, new plantings, and
improvements in infrastructure and postharvest facilities. However, imports are expected to rise
8 percent to 1.3 million tons to support growing domestic use. Russia remains the worlds top
importer, accounting for more than 25 percent of total imports.
Brazils production is estimated to shrink 3 percent to 1.2 million tons on adverse weather and
reduced area as older, barren orchards are taken out of production. Higher production costs and
reduced profitability will continue to limit expansion. Exports are expected to increase to 90,000
tons.
Production in New Zealand is estimated to grow 8 percent to 519,000 tons, while exports,
mostly for Asian markets, were also higher at 300,000 tons.

exports are expected to climb 3 percent to 357,000 tons spurred largely by growing demand from
Asia, and to some extent, Canada and Mexico. The U.S.-Korea Free Trade Agreement that took
effect in March 2012 continues to provide export opportunities for the United States.
Chiles production is estimated to remain flat at 1.2 million tons. With no growth in domestic
consumption, exports are also expected to remain unchanged at 810,000 tons as gains in the

United States counterbalance losses in the EU and Russia. Chile is the worlds leading exporter,
accounting for one third of global exports.
Mexicos production is estimated to rise 9 percent to 215,000 tons. Exports, destined chiefly to
the United States, are expected to surge 25 percent to 170,000 tons on strong consumer demand.
Production in South Africa is estimated at a record 300,000 tons as increased profitability and
favorable government incentives encouraged area expansion. As a result, exports are expected to
increase 6 percent to 280,000 tons, driven mostly by demand from Asia and Middle Eastern
countries which have less stringent import requirements than the EU.
June 2013
Summary: World pear production for 2012/13 is estimated to remain virtually unchanged at
21.9 million metric tons. Chinas expanding production continues to meet its own rising
demand. However, reduced production in the EU and the United States has tightened world
supplies. Trade is estimated to remain at 1.8 million tons.
Accounting for 75 percent of global production, China is expected to rise to a record 16.5
million tons on better crop management which improved yields. Rising input costs are
reportedly threatening producers to shift to growing more profitable fruits like apples and grapes.
Exports are estimated to increase to 440,000 tons, supplying mostly neighboring Asian markets.

EU production is estimated to plunge 25 percent to 2.1 million tons on reduced yields due to
severe drought. Consumption is expected to drop 15 percent to its lowest level in the past seven

production is
estimated to increase slightly to 780,000 tons despite shrinking area as more orchards are
replaced by more profitable wine grapes and other crops. In addition, higher production costs
and declining profitability are forcing smaller growers to sell their land to larger growers or
developers. Meanwhile, exports are expected to grow 20 percent at 470,000 to meet stronger
demand from the EU.
U.S. production is estimated to fall more than 10 percent to 778,000 tons, reducing domestic
consumption to its lowest level in the past seven years. Less pears also went to canning, as
processing is expected to decline 7 percent, the second lowest level in over 20 years. Although
still a near record level, exports are estimated to decline 3 percent due to weaker demand.
Recent market access to China is expected to bolster export sales. Imports are estimated to climb
June 2013
20 percent to 75,000 tons as pears that usually come from Argentina and Chile are now being
augmented by supplies from other countries.
South Africas production is estimated to remain at a record 370,000 tons, although rising
production costs are constraining area expansion. Traditional varieties are being replaced with
early maturing types which would allow South Africa to sell in advance of other key suppliers
from the Southern Hemisphere. Exports, predominantly shipped to the EU, are expected to grow
10 percent to a record 200,000 tons, boosted by a weak Rand versus the Euro, reduced EU
supply and freight advantage over other Southern Hemisphere shippers.
Russias production is estimated to plunge 20 percent to its lowest level in seven years to
110,000 tons due to severe frost and pest damage. Area has steadily declined, as farmers shifted
out of pears on harsh weather and reduced profitability. Pears are now increasingly grown in
smaller private, family orchards for personal consumption and winter canning. Imports are
expected to shrink 15 percent due to falling consumption.
Production in Turkey is estimated to remain virtually unchanged at 390,000 tons, with almost all
going into fresh use. Exports are expected to grow to a record 30,000 tons to meet the strong
demand from Iraq.
Chiles production is estimated to remain at a near record 287,000, although exports (mostly to
the United States) are estimated to diminish 4 percent.
Brazils imports, mainly from Argentina, are estimated to decrease 15 percent to 185,000 tons
due to its restrictive import licensing requirements.

Note: From 1994, the United States and Mexico are on a May-April marketing year. All other
Northern Hemisphere countries are on a June-May marketing year. Southern Hemisphere
countries are on a calendar year indicated as the second year of the split year. Imports and
exports will not equal due to statistical discrepancies. Production has been adjusted to reflect
grapes for fresh-market consumption only. Any comparison with previous years and reports
should take this into account.
