These days, the worlds consumption of raw materials by the construction industries is accumulating day by day resulting to depletion of natural resources and increasing the environmental impacts and CO 2 emissions all over the surroundings. Today concretes are widely used and are dominating construction materials in construction industry. These construction materials have significant impact on the environment. The use of energy during operations and productions of these materials are also excessive. Recycling and reuse are becoming increasingly more important in the construction industry due to the potential shortage of natural resources in the nearby future and due to the inflation in the energy prices. In this study, alternative concept for manufacturing concrete will be introduced, in which production involves recycling waste materials. Concrete is the most widely used material in construction due to its durability, resistance to compressive stress, and its ability to gain strength overtime. There are also lots of advantages through the use of concrete because it is inert, compact and non-porous. It also does not attract moulds or lose its key properties over time therefore it has a low maintenance cost. Concrete is used in nearly every type of construction, including homes, buildings, roads, bridges, airports and subways, just to name a few. And in an era of increased attention on the environmental impact of construction, concrete production can be a bit alarming because as with any building product, production of concrete and its ingredients does require energy that in turn results in the generation of carbon dioxide, or CO2. Because of some environmental issues, concrete has been experimented with the addition of other materials, like water-based cross linking polymers, pozzolanic additives, and other materials to create concrete with improved properties, such as higher strength, electrical conductivity, or resistance to damages through spillage. Research and experiments are also done to find ways on minimizing the cost of operation and production of concrete. Researchers try to find cheaper alternative raw materials in making concrete and most of these are materials are natural products and those used materials that can be recycled and reuse since these products tend to be cheaper than those that are manufactured. This study aims to discover material that can potentially enhance the properties of concrete at the same time making way of minimizing the cost of the material and production of concrete. With the success of this study, the local government or even the contractors can save money and conserve depleting resources of construction materials. This study may promote awareness of the implications and effects of construction activities to our environment.
Objectives of the Study
The general objective of the study is to utilize recycled brick dust as a pozzolanic additive to concrete. Specifically, this study aims to: 1. determine the compressive strength of the concrete with recycled brick dust as pozzolanic additive. 2. determine the flexural strength of concrete with recycled brick dust as pozzolanic additive. 3. determine the strength-to-weight ratio of concrete with recycled brick dust as pozzolanic additive.
Expected Output
The expected output of the study is to produce a concrete with recycled brick dust as pozzolanic additive.
Scope and Limitations of the Study
The scope of the study is on the usage of recycled brick dust as a pozzolanic additive to concrete. Also, this study will only be limited in determining the compressive strength, strength to weight ratio, and flexural strength of concrete with brick dust as pozzolanic additive.
Place and Time of Study
This study will be conducted in Lower Manongol, Kidapawan City, North Cotabato and University of Southern Mindanao Kabacan, Cotabato. This will be conducted October 2014 to January 2014. The compressive stess testing will be done on Universal Multi-Testing Solutions Inc. (UMTSI) Panacan, Davao City.
Definition of Terms
Bending Strength the ability of the sample concrete to resist deformation under an applied load. Compressive Strength the capacity of the sample concrete to withstand axially directed pushing forces. Load Bearing Capacity general term that is related with resistance to excessive deformation. It is known as compressive stress and can be determined using Universal Testing Machine. Molder steel case with a set of dimension where the mixture is to be formed. Recycled Brick Dust dusts produced by pulverizing recycled bricks. It is used as a pozzolanic additive in this study Pozzolanic Additives materials with cementitious property in powder form which are added to the concrete mixture to enhance the quality of concrete.
