Dear Middle School Parents,

There was a focus this week on learning about relatonships, friendships, and dealing
with pressure. We had the opportunity to learn from Michael Thompson, a child psy-
chologist and author who supported parents, students and faculty with learning more
about how we can support each other and grow as individuals. We also had Mr. G
back on of our Freedom from Chemical Dependency (www.fcd.org) counselors
meetng with grade 8 students, and presentng at assemblies for all Middle School
students. This was an opportunity to learn more about decision making, substance
abuse and the importance of learning and talking about these issues which can have a
negatve impact on people's lives. If you would like any follow up or further discus-
sions on these topics we are here to support you. Please contact your child's guid-
ance counselor or the Middle School ofce.

Our next opportunity to meet with parents is our frst parent cofee on Tuesday Sep-
tember 23 from 7:45 - 9:00 A.M. We will begin by talking about what is happening in
Middle School this year, and will also have some tme for informal discussion with us
and with other parents. We look forward to these opportunites of sharing, and of
building connectons with our parents.

Classroom Without Walls is coming up and you should have heard from your child's
advisory teacher about what is happening at each grade level on September 25 and
26. This is a great opportunity for team building and growing as a community. Please
know that we will keep a close eye on the weather in advance of the trips and inform
you of any changes if any circumstances arise.

The school year is now well underway and we are enjoying having conversatons with
our students about their learning and their thinking.

We hope everyone has a good weekend ahead

Yours in Educaton,

Simon Gillespie, Middle School Principal
Amanda Pekin, Middle School Assistant Principal

The Common Cold or Sipon is an infecton of the nasal mucosa, including the sinuses, the throat and or bronchi. It is
caused primarily by viruses of diferent species, like Rhino-, Entero-, Corona-, Adeno- or Paramyxoviruses, and there are
more than 200 strains known to cause a common cold. Colds are the most common infecton of mankind.

While adults catch a cold in average two to three tmes a year, children are afected up to thirteen tmes more ofen.
In the past few days there have been artcles about respiratory complicatons, caused by Enterovirus (EV) D68 in chil-
dren in some states of USA, as well as in some Asian countries, including the Philippines.

Enteroviruses form a quite large family of viruses, and cause 10 15 million infectons in the US yearly. Generally they
tend to have a summer/fall season that ofen peaks in September, and can be easily spread when you have close con-
tact with an infected person. You can also get infected by touching objects or surfaces that have the virus on them then
touching your mouth, nose or eyes, the CDC (the US based Center for Disease Control and Preventon) says.

EV D68 however is a rare virus. A peak has been noted in the past weeks in some hospitals in several states of the US,
where EV D68 caused a large percentage of respiratory complicatons in children, 6 weeks to 16 years of age, with
symptoms of common cold. Dr. Anne Schuchat, director of CDCs Natonal Center for Immunizaton and Respiratory
Diseases said it was too early to say whether the virus would spread to other states and how long the outbreak might
last.

The CDC stated last Monday that none of the cases so far this year were fatal, nor did any result in paralysis, as far as
the CDC knows.

Health ofcials note that there are no vaccines specifcally formulated to prevent Enterovirus D68 or antviral drugs to
treat it. Afected children were receiving asthma medicatons, oxygen and intravenous fuids as needed, the Kansas City
Star reported.

Schuchat stressed that one warning sign parents should look for in their children is difculty breathing, which should
prompt parents to seek immediate medical atenton.

It seems to produce illness with a more severe component (such as) difculty breathing, Dr. William Schafner, an
infectous diseases expert at Vanderbilt University, told NBC News in a Monday report. But the vast majority of these
kids will get beter.
Some AFAC classes require a fee for materials / costumes. Payments should be
made at the Cashiers Ofce. The appropriate fees will be charged to the stu-
dents school account afer September 12, 2014 for Season 1 & 2 actvites. A stu-
dent will be charged for classes not cancelled by September 12, 2014 even if
the student has stopped atending.

NO REFUND will be given afer two weeks of atendance.
