Happy Friday!

Bellwork:
Identify 3 living things in or
around this classroom (it can be
living or pictures from posters)
Determine if each organism
produces its own food, or feeds
off of other organisms
Green Team!
Mondays after school from 4-5 PM
(First meeting next week!)

Recycling, pop tabs, gardening,
environmental stewardship

Permission slips are in the back!
Todays Goals
Today we will learn about:
What living things need to
survive
The difference between
heterotrophs and autotrophs
Why organisms must
maintain homeostasis
What do living things need to
survive?
All living things must satisfy their
basic needs for food, water, living
space, and stable internal conditions
(homeostasis). (p. 323)

1. Food
2. Water
3. Living Space
4. Stable internal conditions
Food (nom, nom, nom)
All living things need food to obtain
energy, but they do this in different
ways.

Autotroph
Heterotroph
Autotroph
Auto means SELF
Troph means FEEDER

Autotrophs make their own food.

What kinds of organisms make their
own food?
Heterotroph
Heterotrophs cant make their
own food, so they eat the
autotrophsor each other.

What are some organisms that
are heterotrophs?
Water
All living things need water

Water does many important things:
Dissolves chemicals that the body uses
90% of your blood is water
Helps move substances within the body
Helps remove waste from body
Stable Internal Conditions
Organisms must be able to
keep the conditions inside their
bodies stable, even when
conditions in their surroundings
change significantly. (p. 325)

This is called Homeostasis
Living Space
Living things need a place to live: to
find food, water and shelter

Because there is a limited amount of
space, Living things often compete
with each other not just for space,
but also the food, water and other
resources inside of that space.
This picture represents which
type of organism?
A.Autotroph, because it makes
its own food
B.Autotroph, because it
consumes other organisms
C.Heterotroph, because it
makes its own food
D.Heterotroph, because it
consumes other organisms

What do all living things need to
consume to get energy?
A.Sunlight
B.Water
C.Shelter
D.Food
This is the process where living things
regulate their internal environments to
remain stable, even if outside it is not.
