Shivanasamudram Power Project is the earliest of hydro power projects constructed
in India, way back in year 1902 to supply electrical power to Kolar Gold mines
situated 85kms away from Bangalore. Visveswaraiah Vidyut Nigam Limited
(VVNL), a Public Sector Company, owned by earstwhile Karnataka Electricity
Board, as a part of the Modernisation programme of the existing Shivanasamudram
Hydro Power Project, had proposed to increase the water carrying capacity of the
power channel upto the Shivanasamudram Balancing Reservoir and also increasing
the live capacity of the Shivanasamudram Balancing Reservoir to cater to the
increased needs of flow capacity of the power channel to meet the increased flow
demand of the Power House and also the increased needs of the drinking water
supply for Bangalore City which is being drawn from Netkal Balancing reservoir
further downstream. Visveswraya Vidhuth Nigama Limited(VVNL), entrusted the
work of planning for the improvements to the power channel and the detailed
engineering of the same to Design Group.

Divider wall under Construction

Brief on Power Project
38

Originally the 2000m long power channel connecting the Shiva head works and the
Shiva Balancing Reservoir had been constructed with a central earthen divider wall
and side slopes lined with stone pitching. The central divider wall was an earthen
bund with stone pitching on the side slopes. The overall dimension of the divider
wall has been 3.7m at the top and 8.2m at the bottom.

Over a period of the last 100 years, the water carrying capacity of the channel had
been reduced to 22.6 cumecs, from the original capacity of 34 cumecs, due to silting,
vegetation growth, etc. In order to increase the discharge carrying capacity of the
channel, the existing divider wall was replaced by a thin RCC dividing wall; the
pitching of the side slopes was reset and covered with RCC lining. The vegetation
growth was completely removed. After modernization, discharge carrying capacity
of the power channel has increased to 59.5 cumecs. The live capacity of Shiva
Balancing Reservoir has been substantially increased by desilting the reservoir and
removal of weed growth. During Construction, DG was asked to suggest a simple
method of desilting of the Balancing Reservoir. A simple technique of using a shovel
mounted on a raft made out of a battery of empty steel drums for desilting was
suggested and was used along with the ejection of the silt by a mud pump and a
pipe line supported on empty floating drums, and thus silt being taken to the shores.
The project was completed successfully in the scheduled time and is functioning
satisfactorily.

lightening ground mats, fixing details etc.

The software provides material take off concurrently, including dynamic changes of
inputs for alternative studies. All the drawings are produced in A4 size sheets,
which can directly be sent to shop floor for manufacture of tower parts. There is a
facility to feed the output directly to CNC machines for automatic manufacture. It is
first of its kind in India, and a boon to manufactures of towers since the wastage of
material is minimal. The services of this software has successfully availed by CPRI,
KPTCL, Deepak Cables, L&T etc., DGs future plan is to develop a software for
accurate tower spotting as well for transmission lines .
