Our team was made up of a multidisciplinary
group of university students studying
Landscape Architecture, Civil and
Environmental Engineering, Design, Art,
Education, and Environmental Science and
Management. As actively-involved students
on campus, we have selected a heavily used
area as our project focus. Between Shields
Library, the main library on campus, and the
Arboretums 2.5-mile water body, Putah Creek,
we believe we can improve how stormwater
from roof runoff, groundwater, and the
surface runoff is managed. By making these
improvements, we can work towards improving
the long-term water quality in the Arboretum.
Due to the heavy fow of traffc, we thought
it would be appropriate to propose that our
solution contribute to a larger educational
opportunity centered around watershed
management between all disciplines and
visitors to the campus.

WATER WHEEL GREEN DOWNSPOUT
Interactive stormwater wheel provides an
educational experience for students and
visitors on campus. A vegetated cover protects
the mechanism while tying the piece back to
the Davis campus as a bike fender. The wheel
uses the current to convey water from the
underground pipes to the surface.
The green downspout
daylights the stormwater into
a series of raised stormwater
planters. This system also
acts as the framework for a
green wall. As the planters
reach capacity, diffused
overfow will be allowed to
percolate into the ground.

G STREET
COMPLETE STREET

G Street is located within the heart of
downtown Davis. This is a street lined with
restaurants and retail shops causing plenty of
foot traffc throughout the day. I was asked to
redesign the street while taking into account
pedestrian circulation, automobile traffc, and
stormwater runoff.
The design looks to improve the pedestrian
experience while restricting the automobiles
through traffc calming measures. The width
of the sidewalk was increased to provide a
comfortable environment for users.
The complete street design allows this street
provide a pedestrian friendly area for the
surrounding businesses. The amount of parking
was reduced but hopefully this will encourage
more people to bike or walk. The street is now
capable of cleaning all of the runoff produced
on the street and some from the surrounding
area.

Pervious area increased by
over 200%. Allowing more
water to percolate into the
surface. Also, runs through a
natural fltration process as it
runs through the planters.
Cracks in concrete and
pavers were utilized for
vegetation. This helps bridge
the gap between the urban
and natural environment.
Water fow is slowed down
by check dams throughout
the planters. This allows time
for the water to flter into
the ground and also helps
reduce stress during a heavy
storm event.
This street has become
pedestrian friendly. Clearly
defned crosswalks and
wider sidewalk ensure
the user has a pleasant
experience. This includes an
outdoor eating area in place
of a parking space.

SAN FRANCISCO
SAN FRANCISCO
SENIOR THESIS

Rainfall is a natural process that is highly mod-
ifed in an urban environment once that water
hits a hard surface. Most people are more
concerned with fnding shelter rather then what
is happening with the stormwater. In urban
areas like San Francisco, stormwater encoun-
ters impervious surfaces that are engineered to
direct it away as quickly as possible. As water
runs along an impervious surface, it picks up
contaminates and pollutants that are harmful to
riparian and aquatic habitats.
This project is based in the Market Street area
of San Francisco, CA. This is a highly used area
that is almost completely covered with imper-
vious surfaces. All of the stormwater in this
area is moved into catchment tanks and later
sent to a water treatment plant to be fltered
and released back into the bay. The goal of
my project is to bridge the separation between
the urban areas and the natural environment.
To accomplish this I am intercepting the water
before it goes underground and treating the wa-
ter on-site through best management practices
and other innovative stormwater management
techniques. This allows the users in this area to
recognize and understand what is happening
with the stormwater around them.

SAN FRANCISCO
COMBINED SEWER
SYSTEM
The stormwater in San Francisco is directed into large underground pipes that
are engineered to move water as quickly as possible into the catchment tank.
The water is held in the tanks until it is able to be pumped to a nearby water
treatment facility. San Franciscos underground system is placed under tremen-
dous pressure during heavy storms. During heavy rainfall the system can intake
too much water causing the catchment tanks to overfow with water and sew-
age. This cause untreated sewage to mix with the stormwater and be dumped
into the bay before it reaches the treatment plant.

The rain garden is where most of the water from the
tram station plaza will be captured and fltered. There
is an overfow drain to handle excess water in the case
of a large storm. The space is surrounded by a jagged
deck that matches the bridge from the plaza while
allowing cracks for vegetation.

PEDESTRIAN WALKWAY
A roof water canopy covers the roof of the tall
sky scraper along the edge of the plaza. The
stormwater is collected and direct down through
the recycled water feature. After this the water is
conveyed through the shallow pool area.
The pedestrian walkway crosses over
the shallow pool for people who dont
want to get their feet wet. The design
of the walkway allows user to sit on the
edge an enjoy the water passing by.

DESIGN AND BUILD STUDIO
The chicken coop is located on a main pas-
sageway to campus. This offers the opportunity
to provide people with an educational expe-
rience. Design of the coop is split into three
different sections, each with a specifc purpose.
These areas include nesting, roosting, and a
walk. The design also allows the bunny to have
its own space under the coop. The other half
of the design is the living roof. The middle roof
is located directly under the kitchen window
doubling as a planter with vegetables for the
household.

CONCEPTUAL SKETCHES
Preliminary sketches depict the development of the design.
This shows the process of fnding the an innovative design for
the green roof while still being able to meet the needs of the
chickens: safety, nesting, and roosting. Ultimately the three
traces allow the chickens a
high roosting area, while the
bunny is allowed to utilize
the empty space beneath the
coop.

SWALE
The three tier design has major benefts for the
green roof design. Stormwater from the roof is
captured by the highest level and slowly works it
way from tier to tier. Once the water reaches the end
a rain chain helps guide the water into the swale
which allows it to percolate into the surface.
The planting plan is divided into three section,
each with there own purpose. This is an
educational coop. The varied planting plan offers
the user to learn about different types of plants
that can be used on green roofs. Each roof was
also planted with different mediums to see which
one worked the best for future projects.
