1. ASSESS DAMAGE
Stop. Stay calm. Take care of anyone injured.
Do not make any statements admitting fault,
or offer to pay for repairs.
Switch on your hazard lights, turn off ignition
and secure vehicle. If necessary, place
reectors or ags and divert trafc.
If necessary, call 911.
Move your vehicle and passengers away from
traffc when the area is safe unless someone
is injured or you suspect a drunk driver.
2. REPORT TO THE POLICE IF:
Anyone has been injured.
Any vehicle has more than $1,000 damage
in Ontario and $2,000 in Alberta.
Any of the vehicles are not drivable.
Any driver does not have a drivers licence
or proof of insurance.
Any public property is damaged, regardless
of the amount.
3. COLLECT INFORMATION
If possible, take pictures of the vehicles
involved and the accident scene.
Gather information from everyone involved
in the accident. Obtain all names and contact
details of drivers, passengers, witnesses
and police.
Record details of the incident.
4. CONTACT YOUR INSURANCE
ADVISOR
Report the collision, including any injuries
and damages to vehicles or properties.
Confrm your coverage.
Request the forms required to access
coverage.
5. IF YOUVE BEEN INJURED:
Seek medical treatment as soon as possible
from the healthcare practitioner of your
choice: medical doctor, chiropractor or
physiotherapist.
6. KEEP RECORDS OF:
What happened.
Who you spoke to (e.g., the police,
your insurer).
Any medical treatment you receive;
keep notes on your condition.
NOTE: Insurance companies determine
liability and fault, not the police. If necessary,
it can be determined by the court.

At the Scene
1. Stop. Stay calm. Take care of anyone injured.
2. Switch on your hazard lights, turn off ignition and secure
vehicle. If necessary, place reectors or ags and
divert trafc.
3. If necessary, call 911.
4. If damage exceeds $1,000 in Ontario or $2,000 in
Alberta, or if there are injuries, call police. In Ontario,
report the collision to the Collision Reporting Centre.
5. Do not make any statements admitting fault, or offer to
pay for repairs.
6. Gather information from everyone involved in the
accident (obtain all contact details).
7. Call your insurance company and insurance advisor and
in Ontario, report to the Collision Reporting Centre.
