Learn Engineering by Seeing: IEEE SSTC holds EDE

Contest on Engineers Day

Engineering knowledge cannot be confined to books. One needs to see things
practically and play with it. This was the basic idea behind the colorful event
Engineering Devices Educator (EDE) Contest 2014, organized by IEEE Student
Branch of Shri Shankaracharya Technical Campus, Bhilai. The event was organized in
the memory of Bharat Ratna Sir Mokshagundam Visvesvaraya, celebrated across
India as Engineers Day on 15
th
September every year.
The EDE Contest at SSTC was a unique event of its kind, where the students from
various engineering disciplines explained various tools commonly used by
engineers and gave practical demonstrations on them. A wide range of devices
were covered during the contest which included 12 broad themes including: Basic
Electrical Components, Electronic & Electrical Measuring Instruments, Sensors,
Transducers, Relays and Contactors, Basic ICs and Processors, Thermodynamic
Devices, Civil Engineering Tools and Computer Hardware, to name a few. The final
round consisted of 24 teams of various engineering disciplines. The winner of the
contest was the team headed by Ch. Kamesh Rao and runner up team was
headed by Deepak Rathore; both are ME students at SSTC.

Earlier the event was inaugurated by the President of Shri Gangajali Education
Society, Shri I P Mishra and Director SSTC, Dr P B Deshmukh. Appraising the
students about the great contributions of Sir M Visvesvaraya, Shri I P Mishra said
that he had been not only a great engineer but a greater human being. Dr.
Deshmukh and Dr. G R Sinha praised the tremendous efforts made by the student
exhibitors and congratulated the event coordinators Dr. R N Patel and Prof. Saji
Chako for setting a new trend by bringing out the engineering knowledge alive
through this exhibition. The student volunteers and participants expressed that
they learnt more during one day of this event than months of study. IEEE student
branch of SSTC envisions to hold many such knowledge exhibitions across
Chhattisgarh in the near future to increase awareness of the students about the
latest technological tools and devices.
