REGIME Magazine Evaluation

What creative decisions did you make at different stages of your

magazine production? How did you magazine change as your work
progressed?
One of the big changes I made to my magazine was the overhaul of the
font Perpetua. I used this font for the cover page, contents page
and the double page spread. However, once I had completed all three,
I looked back and saw it appeared to be too formal. So I spent about
half a lesson finding the right font to fit the magazine. I changed
the font on only the contents page and the double page spread as I
thought Perpetua for the cover page fitted in with the picture of
Jim Morrison used.
Another big change to my magazine was the re-creation of my double
page spread. I originally had a more formal and less interesting
double page spread that was crammed with writing. So I scraped that
idea and started from scratch. I went for a minimalistic design
similar to that of Clash Magazine.

How effective was your research into similar magazines and relevant
target audiences? What did you learn from your research into these
two areas? In what ways did this shape the creation of your
magazine?
The research I did into different magazine companies was very
effective. As I modelled my double page spread on the double page
spread that Clash uses, I had to do a lot of research into it. I
firstly looked up some on Google images but I couldnt get a picture
that gave great detail into the double page spread. So I bought a
copy of Clash.
The cover page was modelled after a similar style used by Rolling
Stone magazine. When researching, I looked up many Rolling Stone
magazine covers on Google Images. The covers I wanted my cover to
resemble included the John Lennon and Yoko Ono cover and the Jimi
Hendrix A MAN AND HIS MUSIC cover.
How closely does your magazine follow the conventions of existing
magazines? Give examples of real magazines you referenced.
My magazine does follow the conventions of existing magazines
meaning Ive used techniques including an image over the logo on the
cover, a quote on the contents page and a minimalistic double page
spread. For the cover page I referenced Rolling Stone with the small
amount of content. On the contents page I used my own ideas and
didnt reference a magazine and for the double page spread I heavily
based it off the double page spread Clash make.
How successful was the finished magazine?
My finished magazine was very successful because of the time I spent
and the level of detail I put into it. My favourite of the three
designs was the double page spread as it looks very professional
from my point of view. If I was to improve any of the three I would
improve the contents page as I thought it was the weakest of the
three. For example, I would model the contents page off of a company
such as Clash, Loud and Quiet and Rolling Stone.
