Romans 6.1-7
The Statue of Liberty
There she stands, an awe-inspiring, majestic presence
in the midst of New York Harbor.
With her torch lifted to the skies, she beckons aliens and all who may be aimlessly
wandering to come find peace, liberty, and, yes, even a place to call home.
She has come to be regarded as a lasting national symbol of freedom its quest and its
beauty being offered to all.
A cross on a lonely hillside a long time ago
When we journey to the cross of Christ, we are appalled at what we see.
We see an innocent, sinless man, being executed because He boldly speaks the truth.
He is willfully hanging there to honor His Fathers will, to fulfill the prophecies of
the prophets of old, and to pay the ransom for our sins.
without the shedding of blood, there is no forgiveness . (Hebrews 9.22, NIV)
Though we were once slaves to sin, we have been set free by the blood of Jesus.
This freedom was claimed when we shared with Jesus in His death, burial and resurrection
through baptism in His name.
This freedom is not the same kind as the national freedom discussed earlier.
As American citizens, our hearts are stirred, when we are reminded of the price that has
been paid and the blood that has been shed so that we might live free in this land.
How much more should our hearts be stirred when we recognize the ultimate sacrifice
of life and shedding of blood that has bought our spiritual and eternal freedom!
That cross on the lonely hillside long ago is not simply a symbol of
suffering and pain, but a symbol of victory victory over life and victory
over death.
So, this morning, we remember the cross
We celebrate the fact that through baptism into His name we are
members of Christs one body whose sins have been cleansed by His
saving blood.
