Wrap Up of the Last Quarter’s Events:

4th Quarterly Meeting – 26th November 2009 at 4:30 pm
Masonic Centre, Cnr Castlereagh and Goulburn Sts, Sydney
Sponsored by Sinclair Knight Merz
SKM’s Rowenna Walker and Ray Slaviero both gave presentations at the PWI
quarterly meeting On Thursday 26th November.

Rowenna’s presentation, entitled ‘Arrested at the end of the line – buffer stops and
more!’ outlined the requirement for stopping trains at terminal locations using
previous derailment examples. She looked at the various existing and new style
buffer stop arrangements used around the world and in particular NSW.
Considerations for assessing existing stopping locations and designing for new
locations were detailed including the use of risk assessment tools. SKM have carried
out several studies to assess existing terminal locations and have designed for
buffer stop locations at Macdonaltown stabling and Homebush and Lidcombe
Turnbacks.

Ray, the 2008 PWI young achiever of the year gave a humorous and informative presentation on his recent trip to
the 9th International Heavy Haul Conference held in Shanghai, China.

Ray colourfully conveyed the numerous activities as part of the “ Business end of the trip” including his attendance a
the conference, the associated site visit to the Port of Qinhuangdao, the various networking events and his visit to
the Modern Railways exhibition which was held in conjunction with the conference. Ray also went on to discuss his
“Greater Chinese Experience”, seeing the various sites of Shanghai and Beijing, and embracing the local culture and
cuisine.
