Sponsorship Information Brochure

Lehigh University Formula SAE

Formula Team and FSAE Michigan
The Lehigh Formula SAE team is an undergraduate
engineering club composed of engineering and
business students. Each year the team designs,
manufactures, and races a unique racecar in the
Society of Automotive Engineers collegiate design
competition. The FSAE competition allows students to
experience the complete progression of a product,
from initial concept to manufacture and assembly.
Additionally, students are introduced to business
practices and supplier interactions.
Each year the Society of Automotive Engineers hosts
a design competition just outside Detroit Michigan at
the Michigan International Speedway. Universities
from around the world produce their own racecar
prototype to compete in design, business planning,
and performance events. Teams are expected to
generate a design within certain specifications that
can be produced in production quantities while
retaining competitive racing performance.
The Lehigh University Formula SAE team relies
primarily on industry sponsorships to fund the
construction of the racecar. With limited resources,
the team needs to find a balance between
engineering optimization and financial planning. Over
the past few years, the financial economy has limited
team funding. Despite those setbacks, each year we
have completed our car on time and managed to
remain competitive within one of the slimmest
budgets in the Formula SAE competition. As we look
toward the 2013 season, the steady economic
recovery and arguably the most experienced group of
returning student engineers should produce the most
competitive season in Lehigh Racing history.

X43 | 2013 Formula Car

Design Aspects
The current X43 prototype for the 2012 through
2013 season is in the design and simulation phase.
The focus for X43 is developing a lightweight core
structure and compact assembly package. The overall
vehicle footprint will remain small, allowing greater
maneuverability than larger, heavier vehicles.
First introduced in 2011 on X41, the monocoque
torsion rail chassis featured in the 2012 X42 vehicle
will likely return with an improved design. As the only
team to consistently work with composites outside of
the standard yet expensive monocoque shell, Lehigh
Racing continues to produce effective and
economical composite chassis designs. The unique
carbon fiber suspension mount flexures are another
key design component that allows the use of lighter
suspension components, greatly reducing undesirable
unsprung suspension weight.
The single cylinder Yamaha YFZ450 racing ATV
engine will be the foundation of the drivetrain setup.
The recent progress in wireless tuning of the engine
control unit will continue to improve efficiency of
testing. The quick, karting inspired handling of the
vehicle is always a target resulting from a
comprehensive suspension analysis and the quick
engine response of the billet machined spool.
X43 Specifications
Chassis: partial carbon fiber composite monocoque
Engine: Yamaha YFZ450 novel fuel injection and
wireless tuning control
Drivetrain: CNC machined one-piece spool

Sponsorship Opportunities
Sponsor Benefits
As a student operated club on the Lehigh University
campus, the team must rely on industry sponsorships
to construct a racecar each year. This relationship
develops a firm connection between the engineers
and the businesses we work with. The Formula SAE
program is a unique opportunity for students through
an experience that not only involves design, but also
manufacturing and business planning. With this
approach, students encounter the necessary
transitions from concept to application that
accompany business projects.
Due to production requirements, in kind sponsorships
of materials and services are accepted and in some
cases encouraged. The team can provide valuable
data during vehicle testing that can improve or
demonstrate the viability of donated developmental
products or materials. Lehigh Racing can act as a
test bed for motorsports, aerospace/composites,
and other industries. The team proudly represents all
of our sponsors at the annual competition, Lehigh
University functions, and community events.
Lehigh University is a 501(c)(3) charitable
organization and all donations are tax-deductible. To
