26th Sunday in Ordinary Time

SOCIAL JUSTICE SUNDAY
Today is Social Justice Sunday. In this Social Justice Statement, Australias Bishops
celebrate the many blessings that sport offers us as individuals and as a community;
personal development, friendship and solidarity, a contribution to our own health and
that of our nation, and the sheer joy of movement and skill. Against these blessings,
we have to acknowledge a darker side, which too often reveals violence on and off
the field, abuse of drugs and alcohol, racism, sexism and commercial exploitation.
This Social Justice Statement challenges us to look at the place of sport in our lives.
How can we ensure that sport can thrive and in return nourish our society, and how
can we confront the influences that undermine or distort its ideals?
Most importantly, how can we work to realise sports potential to unite communities,
overcome differences and be a force for social justice and reconciliation?

PROCLAIM CONFERENCE
In August representatives from parishes in our Diocese, including Bishop Paul Bird,
attended the 2014 Proclaim Conference in Sydney. Representing our parish were
Anna Schlooz & Tony Herbert. Keynote Speakers: Fr Michael White & Tom
Corcoran from the Church of the Nativity, Baltimore, USA.
Their message: Whatever kind of parish youre in, whatever style of church youre
leading, whatever the culture of your community, you can grow a healthy parish.
The keynote address highlighted three areas the Church needs to focus on for each
parishioners experience to be spiritually uplifting:
The Message, Ministry & Music

Ecology & Sustainability Focus: In every scientific and technological endeavour an
attitude of respect for all creatures is necessary. One must take into account the
nature of each being and of its mutual connection in an ordered system. We cannot
interfere in one area of the ecosystem without paying attention to the consequences
of such interference to other areas and to the well-being of future generations.
