The National Fire Protection
Association (NFPA), the official sponsor of
Fire Prevention Week (FPW) for more than
90 years, is gearing up to officially kick off
this year's campaign, October 5-11, 2014.
The theme is Working Smoke Alarms Save
Lives: Test Yours Every Month!
Smoke alarms can help make the dif-
ference between life and death in a fire,
but they need to be working, said Lorraine
Carli, NFPAs vice president of Outreach
and Advocacy. This years Fire Prevention
Week campaign reinforces the importance
of testing smoke alarms each month, and
works to ensure that people have the need-
ed protection in the event of a home fire.
Working smoke alarms cut the risk of
dying in a home fire in half. While research
shows that most U.S. homes have at least
one smoke alarm, almost two-thirds of
home fire deaths result from fires in homes
with no smoke alarms or no working smoke
alarms.
The common presence of smoke
alarms in the home tends to create a false
sense of security, said Carli. Simply hav-
ing smoke alarms isn't enough. They need
to be tested and maintained properly.
In addition to monthly testing, smoke
alarms should be installed and maintained
as follows:
There should be at least one smoke
alarm on every level of the home (including
the basement), outside all sleeping areas
and in every bedroom.
For smoke alarms that include a 10-
year non-replaceable battery, replace the
entire smoke alarm if it begins to chirp,
indicating that the battery is running low.
For smoke alarms that use regular batter-
ies, replacing the batteries once a year is
recommended, or before then if the battery
begins to chirp.

Exploring Milwaukees own Tropical
Rainforest by flashlight is the focus of
Rainforest Night, Friday, Oct. 10, from 6-
9 p.m. at the Mitchell Park Domes. The
Domes, Milwaukees Living Landmark, is
located at 524 S. Layton Blvd.
An introduction to the plants of the rain-
forest, food samples, tropical animals,
African cuisine, and live music comprise the
event.
Families are encouraged to bring their
own flashlights on their discovery tour of
the Tropical Dome. Visitors will see plants
that produce nuts, fruits, vanilla beans, cof-
fee beans, and cocoa seeds and taste
samples.
Event-goers will also have the opportu-
nity to meet, up-close and personal, exotic
birds and insects of the tropics. Lori Drew
and friends from the Center for Avian
Rehab and Education (CARE) will present
exotic birds. Phil Holzbauer, a science
teacher and entomologist, will present his
collection of insects and other arthropods.
Authentic tropical cuisine by Afro
Fusion Cuisine and adult beverages from
Zilli Hospitality Group will be available for
purchase.
Live music and poetry will round out
the event. Performing in the Show Dome
will be KTs Universal Love Band; and in the
Tropical Dome, Sound Alchemists. Bringing
her art of performance writing, Anja
Notanja Sieger of La Prosette will create
and type customized poem-letter hybrids
for a fee. Sieger was named this years
Pfister Narrator.
Souvenir-seekers will enjoy the cultural
market featuring items hand-crafted by peo-

You can see and feel the change of sea-
sons. Fall color is starting to appear, pan-
sies, mums and asters are in the garden cen-
ter and your thoughts are turning to prepar-
ing your landscape for winter.
Those in warm climates are switching to
winter annuals, while those in colder
regions are fortifying their landscapes for
the cold winter ahead. No matter where
you live, invest some time in preparing your
landscape for the change in seasons.
Dedicating some time now will pay off with
healthier more beautiful plants next spring.
Continue to mow the lawn high as long
as it continues to grow. Theres no need to
cut it short unless that is the look you prefer.
Fertilize the grass with a low nitrogen
slow release fertilizer like Milorganite ). Fall
fertilization provides the greatest benefit to
your lawn and gives you the best value for
the time and money invested.
Those in cooler regions growing blue-
grass, fescue and perennial ryegrass should
fertilize around Labor Day when tempera-
tures start to cool. Then make a final appli-
cation between Halloween and
Thanksgiving before the ground freezes.
Those in warmer climates growing cen-
tipede, Bermuda and zoysia should also fer-
tilize around Labor Day. However, be sure
to make the last fall application at least one
month prior to the average first killing frost.
Shred leaves as they fall. Leave some
on the lawn to add organic matter and nutri-
ents to the soil. As long as you can see the
grass blades through the shredded leaves
your lawn will be fine.
Use the rest of the shredded leaves in
your compost pile, as mulch on top of the
soil or as a soil amendment. Just dig a two
to three inch layer into the top 12 inches of
annual or new planting beds. These leaves
will break down and add organic matter. By
spring the leaves will decompose and the
garden bed will be ready to cultivate and
plant.
Plant a few bulbs now for a colorful
early spring display. Incorporate compost,
aged manure or other organic matter into
the planting area. Add a low nitrogen slow
release fertilizer at the time of planting. In
general, plant bulbs two to three times their
vertical diameter deep. Follow specific
planting and spacing directions on the pack-
age or tag.
Select animal-resistant bulbs to avoid
squirrels digging up the bulbs and deer and
rabbits eating the blooms. Daffodils,
hyacinths, grape hyacinths and squills are a
few to consider. Little Tommies (Crocus tom-
masinianus) tend to be more squirrel resist-
ant than other crocus varieties.
Those gardening in mild climates need
low chill bulbs that will thrive and flower
after a mild winter. Or purchase precooled
bulbs for winter planting and spring flower-
ing.
Allow disease- and insect-free perenni-
als to stand for winter. This will increase
their winter hardiness and your enjoyment.
The dried leaves, stems and seedheads pro-
vide beauty for you to enjoy, seeds for the
birds and overwintering homes for many
butterflies and beneficial insects.
Plant trees, shrubs and perennials. The
soil is warm and the air is cool perfect
conditions for planting and establishing
trees, shrubs and perennials. And for those
lucky enough to garden in warm climates,
add a few winter annuals.
Continue to water the landscape as
needed throughout the fall. Be sure to water
evergreens and new plantings thoroughly
before the ground freezes.

your garden, get outdoors and enjoy the
beauty of fall. And be sure to invest a bit of
energy now to insure your landscape is
ready for the season ahead.

Technician to join our team. Responsibilities included the installation,
service, repair and preventative maintenance of the Corrugator and
Conveyor systems in a state of the art facility. This position is for 2nd or
3rd shift.
Preferred qualifications include but are not limited to: 2-3 years of
Electro-Mechanical Automation System Installation & Troubleshooting
Experience; operational knowledge of automated industrial machinery
which includes: motors, servos, drives, relays 3 phase power,
communication devices, industrial/electronic controls and power
transmission systems; good understanding of hydraulic and pneumatic
systems; strong troubleshooting and problem solving ability with
practical, mechanical and electrical aptitude; must be able to read and
interpret both electrical and mechanical drawings; must be fully
computer literal with Microsoft environment; excellent written and
verbal communication skills; ability to work independently in a mature
and professional manner; two year technical degree, certificate or
equivalent experience desired. All candidates must be willing to work
any available shift; as well as overtime. Corrugated background and/or
boiler license is a plus, but not required. Only TEAM THINKING

6:00 p.m. until 6:00 a.m. This 12-hour shift works on
a 2-week rotating 2-2-3, with every other Friday /
Saturday / Sunday off. As a member of our winning
