Presidents Letter:

Greetings!

We kicked off our new season with a fantastic first meeting! Im delighted to report that we now have 100 members! Dave Sampson is a
mixed media artist and photographer, and is Trudys husband! I love that we have so many couples in our membership! JR Roberts, who is
a mixed media artist and photographer as well, has returned to the Guild, and were delighted to have him back. Jeanne Gregor, who is a
mosaics artist from Colorado and Naples, is our third new member. Welcome to all of you!

We have all of the volunteers we need for our upcoming Ride the Color Wheel Exhibit at the von Liebig Art Center in Naples except for
someone to organize the Peoples Choice Award. If you would like to help with this, please let me know. Thank you to everyone who has
signed on. Im sure its going to be our best exhibit yet. Receiving for this exhibit is Tuesday, October 7, 2014 from 11 AM 2 PM. Please
have all of your paperwork filled out, your check written, and your art work ready for installation. Also, its important to arrive within the
timeframe of 11 AM 2 PM. If you come too early, we wont be set up yet, and if you come too late, you wont be able to finish the receiving
process before 2. Both of these things place tremendous stress on your fellow Guild members who are working that day. We will end the
Receiving process at 2 PM sharp so that we can prepare for the judge who will be arriving shortly after 2. For the first time scribes will be
accompanying the judge so that we can all have some insight into his thought processes.

Our beautiful publicity postcard for this season has been created by Angela Aradia and Al Liccardi and is pictured below. Featured from L-
R: Zdenka Fialas necklace, Martha Grattans pitcher, Kathy Ericksons basket, my wave, and Pam Richardsons quilt. Additional copies
have been ordered and will be available at the October 18 meeting. Many thanks to A&A for another great job! (A picture of the post card
can be found at the end of the minutes in the next section of this Newsletter.)

We have all of our artists in place for our Artists@Work events at the Alliance for the Arts on November 1, 2014 and February 28, 2015.
These events are held at the Alliance in conjunction with their Green Market Farmers Market. Mark the dates on your calendars, and be
sure to come out to support your fellow Guild members, the Guild, and the Alliance! Thank you to everyone whos signed on to work these
events. November demos will include hand-built pottery, fused, painted, and cast glass, jewelry of all kinds, basket making, eggshell art,
raku firing, stone sculpture, mosaics, and doll making. In February we will add more fine crafts added to the mix!
Ill see you next in Naples!

Warm wishes, Lorraine

Southwest Florida Fine Craft Guild
Business Meeting Minutes Sept. 20, 2014

The meeting was called to order at 1:05 pm by Lorraine Capps.

>Introduction of guests and new and returning members, JR
Roberts, Xavier Brignoni, Sandra May Rashan, and Jeanne Gregor.
>Motion to approve the minutes from the last business meeting
was made by Edie Limbright and seconded by Bobbi Robertson.
>Overview of the bylaw changes being proposed changing from
the Standards Review process to the Peer Review process,
defining the roles and responsibilities of the Scholarship Chair
position, and changes to the procedures with regards to Proxy
votes and the voting requirements. Floor opened up to a
discussion of the changes being proposed. Voting made by a show
of hands. Motion was passed with no nay votes and no abstains.
>We have made changes for the requirements to enter exhibits. In
order to disburse the workload required to successfully operate an
organization as large as ours, volunteer requirements will change.
For each exhibit you wish to enter, must have a corresponding
volunteer duty. A full time position such as serving on the board
or those in a director capacity will give that member a pass to
enter any or all shows during that Season. A list of available duties
was presented and some volunteers for those were obtained. We
still need a Volunteer Coordinator, an Art Council delegate and a
volunteer to handle the Peoples Choice Award by creating the
ballots and collecting and tabulating the results. All volunteer
opportunities will be printed in the monthly newsletter.
>Our Artist@Work event last year at the Alliance for the Arts was
a huge success. As such, we have 2 dates for this event this year on
November 1
st
and February 28
th
. If you wish to demonstrate your
craft at this event, contact Lorraine Capps. We have been asked
to provide between 10-15 artists. Should we get more than 15
artists; the additional artists will be placed on a waiting list. This
is an opportunity for members to demonstrate and sell their work,
with no commission being charged.
>The Fall for the Arts will be held October 18
th
at the Alliance of
the Arts. We will have an information table set up and artists who
man the booth can bring examples of their work for sale.
>Gift Shop Explosion at the Alliance of the Arts is November 15
th
.
>Nancy Giffin requests that all members of the Guild visit the
Guild website and check their personal information to ensure that
it is correct. If changes needed to be made, contact Nancy.
>Dee Cooper Treasurers Report We have $4,883.68 in our
account as of September 15
th
. Dee Cooper also indicates that we
still have some guild t-shirts for sale. The ladies t-shirts are $15
and the guys t-shirts are $12.75. We still have a wide variety of
sizes available. See Dee if you would like one.
>Kathy Erickson Membership Report- We have a new sign- in
sheet that we will be using for this Season. Each month will have
its own sheet. There were 4 members who had perfect attendance
of 8 meetings and 7 members who had attendance at 7 meetings.
We now have 100 members. Yearbooks for the membership will
be available at the October meeting. Kathy stated that dues are
now being collected for the coming season. As in the past, if you
pay before November 30
th
, your dues will be reduced by $5. Early
registration costs are $30 for an individual or $45 for a family.
>Toni Ory provided an update on the Ding Darling
Upcycle/Recycle. The 2
nd
annual event will be held April 1-2, 2015.
The applications are not ready yet, but the event will still be small,
with the limit of 25 artists being juried in. The sales event will
take place indoors this year. No fee schedule for the event has
been released yet.
>Toni Ory provided information on a sales opportunity at Ding
Darling. In October and December, guild members will have a
chance to exhibit work at the Ding Darling gift shop. We are
looking for 4-6 artists. Artwork should be nature related (specific
to our region) and preferably be made from recycled materials. A
25% commission will be taken by Ding Darling. During this time,
all guild members will receive a 10% commission on any gift shop
purchases. See Toni if you are interested in exhibiting.
>Our next exhibit is Ride the Color Wheel at the von Liebig in Naples.
Receiving is Tuesday, October 7
th
, Reception October 10
th
, and
Removal November 7
th
. We are ok for volunteers for receiving. A
request was made to the floor for volunteers for installation, hosts
for the reception, and removal. Volunteers obtained. A request for
a volunteer to create the programs and labels for the show was
asked, but no volunteer was obtained. If interested, please contact
Lorraine Capps.
>The Community Foundation exhibit is from November 3
rd
to
December 30th. This is an event juried by the art council; however
no judging or prizes will be awarded. A prospectus for this show
will be distributed soon. We will need lots of wall work. Artists
may submit up to 4 pieces for a flat rate of $10.00. A 35%
commission will be taken for sales, with the proceeds going into
an art fund, which can be taken as a charitable donation for taxes.
A discussion was made concerning the lack of pedestals we have
and that there are several shows overlapping where pedestals will
be needed. If you have pedestals at the Coconut Point Gallery, we
request that you make arrangements to remove these so that they
can be used for upcoming shows. A request for a volunteer to
collect money for this show was made, and Kathy Erickson will
collect the monies for this show.
We are still trying to get a show scheduled for the Englewood Art
Center for next season. We were granted a show during this
season, however the dates conflicted with another show we
already had scheduled. If you have any ideas for a venue for a show
for next season, contact Lorraine Capps.
>Louis Ford Peer Review Weve received good feedback from
the members who have gone thru the peer review process. Louis
went over the process with the membership and benefits in
participating.
>Bobbi Robertson discussed the Caloosa Nature Center. The
center is undergoing reorganization and is looking for artists to do
demonstrations on crafts involving recycling. Bobbi will be there

on November 22
nd
. See Bobbi if you are interested in doing a demo
or teaching, or you can contact Sue Scott at Caloosa Nature
Center. A small donation is being requested by the center.
>Angela Aradia Publicity if you are on Facebook, please send
Angela any news or photos so that these can be posted to our
Facebook page. Whenever we post something new, please like
and share the post. When this happens we see a huge spike in
traffic to our page. Weve also designed new postcards this year,
and a copy of this was distributed to all members present at the
meeting.
New business
>Rose Young will be teaching a weaving class on Thursday from 5-
7 at the Quality of Life Center.
>Dale Eulitz will have a booth at the Peace Day Festival on Sunday,
Sept 21

>Sandra Mark update on the Art Council the first meeting will

meeting.
>Co-Op Gallery update. The co-op gallery receiving will be
October 13
th
. You can submit 4 small and 4 large pieces. The
Reception will be October 17
th
. Beginning on November 1
st
, the
Co-op Gallery will be open 6 days a week (closed on Mondays)
and beginning on November 28
th
, the Gallery will be open 7 days a
week during the holiday season. We will again be accepting
holiday ornaments/gift items which would be in addition to the
regular gallery submissions. We are hoping for a new lease for the
space that we are in, however this is the last large space left at the
mall and there have been people looking at the space. We have a
30 day clause and could lose our lease at any time with 30 days
notice.
>The reception for the current exhibit at the Community
Foundation is October 2
nd
from 4-6.
>The Winners Circle show will be March 16 thru the 28
th
at the
VAC in Punta Gorda. This is an invitation only show held semi-
annually for all Art Council members who have won qualifying
awards in their groups. Eligible winners have already been sent to
the Council and invitations will be going out. Receiving for this
show will be Friday, March 13
th
.
>The display case at the Cape Coral Art Studio is open to all
members, with priority given to new members. A sign-up sheet
was circulated. January is reserved for craft bash and April is
reserved for new members.
>Our next meeting will be October 18
th
. Birgie Miller will be here
from Ding Darling.

>We are continuing the Friendship Meetings. If you wish to have a
meeting at your home, contact Lorraine. We have one scheduled
for January at Francine Gersons home. See the newsletter for
details.
>Tania Begg brought up that a sculpture that was stolen last year
from the gallery in Punta Gorda showed up this last week, mailed
to the gallery, in an unmarked box that had been mailed from
Kansas.
>Pam Richardson reminded the membership that we will again be
donating money and items to be raffled off for the troops,
coordinated through Sip and Send. October is not too soon to be
thinking about donations of art or money.
>Dale Eulitz won the 50/50 raffle, with the Guilds portion being
donated to Sip and Send.
>Bobbi Robertson made the motion to adjourn and Angela
seconded it. Meeting adjourned at 2:25.
>A discussion followed the meeting on copyright infringement
issues after a summer meeting with Anne Dalton and the changes
to the prospectus and waiver that were implemented as a result of
that same meeting.
Respectfully submitted Renee Farr

Tania Begg shared this story at the September
meeting: Two & a half years ago, I had a very large
natural stone beaded sculpture stolen from the
SeaGrape Gallery up in Punta Gorda, where I am a
member. Just like some lost pets that find their way
home, so has "Harry the Nassau Grouper". Amazingly,
the parcel arrived in the mail at the gallery last week
from Kansas at a cost of $21.37 for postage. Wrapped
in an old curtain in this box was "Harry". A little thin
from his ordeal (squashed in and dirty). After a good
washing and gentle filling out, he was back to his old
glory....I have my signature piece back and it feels so
good! His return made the front page in full color in
the Punta Gorda/Port Charlotte area. Every year when
snowbirds come back, they ask about "Harry"?
This year I have something to tell them---if only he
could talk!

to celebrate that spirit, determination and, of course, her
boundless creativity and love.
We hope you will be able to join us and look forward to seeing
you there. Please email your RSVP to me

NEWS FROM THE VP COMMITTEE:
The VP Committee is actively looking for exhibit venues, and in
that regard, is looking for exhibit themes. The Board has
approved a list of themes so that proposals can be sent out
quickly if a venue comes to our attention. However, we can never
have too many theme ideas, and since hopefully we will be
sending out additional proposals in the near future, we are still in
need of ideas. Toni Ory is our Keeper of Themes, so let her know
all of your suggestions. Also, if you have ideas for judges to hire
for our exhibits, please let Toni know. She will compile a list of
judges to bring before the Board for approval. All themes and
judges will be Board-approved in the future.
MEMBERSHIP UPDATE:

We now have 89 active members which makes a total of 100
members! We are still looking to add more members this
season. Everyone is encouraged to carry a members brochure
with them. Casual contact with other artists is how we find new
members. Dues for 2015 are being collected NOW! Pay
before November 30 and receive a $5 deduction: $30 for
individuals and $45 for families. Receive your new 2015
membership card before Januarys receiving dates! Send payments
to: Kathryn Erickson, PO Box 511602, Punta Gorda, FL 33951.
The new 2014-2015 Yearbook will be available at the October
meeting. Your name will be on your book so look for it in the
lobby when you sign in.

CO-OP ART GALLERY UPDATES:

Gallery participants will be able continue to sell hand-made
greeting cards. Please consult the Gallery Prospectus and Art
Council Newsletters for details. Both can be downloaded from
their web site: www.acswf.org. Thanks again to all those who
worked over the summer to keep the Gallery open! In October the
number of pieces that an artist may bring to the Gallery will
return to 4 large items and 4 small items. In November the
Gallery will be open six days a week: Tuesday through Sunday. In
December the Gallery will be open seven days a week. The gallery
sitting schedule can be found on the Art Councils web site. If you
must change your sitting date, it is your responsibility to find a
replacement AND you must email Ginny Whiteman at
ginny@whiteman.net. Ginny must have updated information
regarding the sitting schedule. October Receiving is Monday,
October 13 from 10 AM 1 PM and the October Reception is
Friday, October 17 from 5 7 PM. In order to participate in the
Gallery, you must be a member of the Guild for three months and
you must attend two business meetings.

SCHOLARSHIP COMMITTEE:

SWFFCG sponsored 11 children in art camp this summer. 3 at
CCAS, 4 at the Alliance and 4 at Big Arts. Each recipient was
sponsored for 1 week of an art class. Trudy is looking forward to
expanding our end of school year awards/scholarships. We have 2
new patrons for this effort: Sue Archers parents, Betty and Bill
Tripp and Anne Dalton.

CCAS GUILD CASE:

The Guilds display case is located in Building 2 of CCAS. CCAS
retains 30% of the sales, so work should be priced accordingly.
Contact Jeanne Kostrub to reserve your spot: 239-731-1302;
jekglass@gmail.com. New members should take advantage of this
opportunity! The Board has decided that beginning in April of
2015, each April will be new members month in the case. New
members will be able to put one piece in the case for that month.
We want to continue to encourage new members and members
who have never shown in the case to take advantage of this
opportunity so that we can have fresh work and more people
participate.

DING DARLING COMMITTEE NEWS:
J.N. Ding Darling Gift Shop News

Things are shaping up at Ding Darling Gift Shop - for the month
of October, we have 5 Guild artists displaying their work - Angela
Aradia, Lorraine Capps, Phyllis Rieser, Toni Ory, and Rose
Young. Their work will be on display from October 6 until the end
of the month. Guild members still have an opportunity to sell
during the month of December. We already have a couple of
artists on the list. One of our newer members, Jay Lana, will be
featured for the month of November as a lead-in to the 2015
Upcycle! Art Fest. He won second place last April at the Fest
with his wonderful recycled / upcycled lamps.

Here again are the guidelines - Up to SIX artists will be featured
and receive publicity from Ding Darling Wildlife Society. The
artwork should be primarily recycled/repurposed with a nature
theme (plants, native animals, shells, etc. - no flamingoes,
penguins, tigers.) Number of pieces per artist will be determined
as space permits. All artwork must fit on tables, or small wall
space - jewelry, sculpture, fabric, and glass will be allowed,
however, there will not be room for floor pieces. Ding Darling gift
shop will assign a vendor number for each artist, take a 25%
commission, and give the Guild publicity plus 10% off coupons
for all Guild members on any purchase in the gift store (except for
the purchase of artwork on consignment.) Ding Darling is asking
each artist involved to have their work priced in only up to 3
different price points so the Gift Shop manager doesn't have to
enter multiple settings in the computer database. For example,
you could have things that are $25, $30, and $100 and someone
else might have their pricing at $10, $35, and $99. The artwork
will have to be dropped off on a specific day - "receiving day" - at
the beginning of the month and picked up at the end. Each week,
Lise Bryant, manager of the gift shop, will notify Toni Ory of any
sales and she will, in turn, notify the artists of their sales. Pieces
can be replenished on Monday morning each week if any are sold.
The number of items displayed may vary depending on space, so if
4 or 5 or 6 artists each bring in 10 pieces, but there is only space
for 6 pieces each, the extra ones can either be taken home or back
stocked.

Ding Darling does reserve the right to refuse any artwork that
may not be suitable for the gift shop. This is a great opportunity
for holiday sales with no jurying and no gallery sitting. Artists
will be accepted on a first come - first served basis. Please contact
Toni Ory at toni@toniory.com to be put on the list or for any other
questions. Hopefully, Ding Darling will see how wonderful our
Guild artists are so we may have more opportunities to display
there!

PEER REVIEW COMMITTEE:

Every new season brings the opportunity to start in different
directions, experimenting and beginning in new media. If you are
interested in a Peer Review from Guild members to jump start
your craft, just email archerartpost@gmail.com or let Louis Ford
or Sue Archer know you are interested at the next meeting.

PUBLICITY:

Press releases about the Ride the Color Wheel exhibit at the
von Liebig Art Center in Naples, have been sent to the bi-
weeklies, weeklies and daily newspapers within Lee and Collier
County area. The show opens October 13, runs through
November 6th and the reception is Friday, October 10 from 5:30
to 7 pm. Happenings Magazine has already received press
concerning the Ride the Color Wheel exhibit. Ive also sent out
a press release to Happenings Magazine about the upcoming SW
Florida Community Foundation exhibit which will open in
November. Also the same information concerning Ride the Color
Wheel will be placed on the Southwest Florida Fine Craft Guild
and Art Council of SW Florida Facebook pages as well as shared
on my Facebook page. So if you are friends with me or Lorraine or
any other Guild member, remember to click and share the
information. Please see the calendar or your yearbook for all dates
on upcoming events. The publicity postcard with all the dates of
our exhibits has been mailed out to interior decorators in Naples
and marketing to those who make over $150,000 or more and
have lived in Naples for up to 10 years. 500 more cards have been
printed with the Artists@Work dates and Craft Bash dates for
local hand out distribution. Lorraine Capps, President, has
scanned the postcard and has posted it on her Facebook account
and the Guild Facebook account. Members who are friends have
been sharing this information. At the September meeting, I asked
members to send me, via email, photos and info about any of their
upcoming events, new work, etc. for the Guild Facebook page. I
receive weekly updates from FB concerning hits generated from
updates and since Ive posted the latest events from Phyllis Rieser
and Francine Gershon, the traffic has risen about 15%. Also artists
are asking me for the jpg of the postcard so that they can send
it to their email lists. If any member wants to spread the news
about the Guild, just email me and I will send you a jpg of the
postcard. If you havent seen the post card yet, it will be
distributed at the October meeting and is available online at our
website: www.swflfinecraftguild.org. I will keep posting in the
upcoming newsletters asking members to send me any news with
photos about individual upcoming exhibits, events, workshops
etc. for publicity on the web. It is a great way to get publicity for
free! I am currently working on two half page ads for Happenings
magazine. These ads will push the Craft Bash and upcoming VAC
and CCAS exhibits. Submitted by Angela Aradia, Publicity Chair.

New Volunteer Policy: The Board adopted a new volunteer
policy at its September meeting. Those who volunteer for an
ongoing job such as officer, director, chair, active member of a
committee, or any other job that requires continued work
throughout the season, will be qualified to enter all exhibits
during that season. Those who volunteer for a one-day job, such
as working at Craft Bash, Artists@Work, or a one-day exhibit job,
will be qualified to enter one (1) exhibit only. In order to

participate in other exhibits additional volunteering will be
required.

Art Council Delegate: Our Art Council Delegate goes to most
Art Council meetings (November through April), and reports to
the membership all Art Council news and developments at
meetings and in the newsletter. The Delegate will also collect
information for the Art Councils biennial Winners Circle
Exhibit, present it to the Board for approval, and provide that
information to the Art Council.

Buddy System: Established members who are active in the Guild
are assigned to a new member and make themselves available to
explain all facets of Guild activities, answer all questions and
concerns, sit with new members during meetings, and generally
help them become informed and feel comfortable as quickly as
possible. There is a pool of people to pull from when new
members join, and we can always use more!

Peoples Choice Awards: This position includes creating and
gathering all the supplies necessary for the Peoples Choice
Awards at our exhibits, as well as tabulating the final count.

All Upcoming Exhibits: We will need volunteers for Receiving,
Installation, database entry & program creation, Receptions, and
Removal for our remaining three exhibits of the season. We have
the exhibit at the Southwest Florida Community Foundation in
November and December, our Extra Dimensions exhibit at the
Visual Arts Center of Punta Gorda in January, and our A Walk on
the Wild Side exhibit at CCAS in February.

Volunteer Coordinator: Phyllis Rieser is stepping down to
assume the role of Chair of the Grant Writing Committee, so we
need someone to fill this position. The Volunteer Coordinator
assigns buddies via our Buddy System, and recruits for positions
needed, as well as keeps the membership up-to-date on what is
needed.
Please contact Lorraine Capps to discuss volunteer needs and
assignments.

Hospitality: Judy Van and Lisa Tully will need another person to
help them prepare for and clean up after our meetings since Lynn
Ondercin is our new Secretary. You will need to come to the
meetings early to help set up.
EXHIBIT SPONSORSHIPS: We are looking for Sponsors for our
upcoming exhibits. Sponsorships for our October Ride the Color
Wheel exhibit in Naples and for our A Walk on the Wild Side exhibit
at CCAS in February are $1,000 each. Sponsorship for our Extra
Dimensions exhibit at the Visual Arts Center of Punta Gorda in
January is $1,600, since our costs for that exhibit are higher.
Because we are a 501(c) (3) tax exempt organization, these
sponsorships are tax-deductible. Other benefits include the
sponsors advertisement or logo prominently displayed on all
printed material for the event, in the newsletter, and on the web
site. Lets all hit the pavement and try to find sponsors!
