ASBURY PARK A knife-wielding man slashed a city
police officer, then was shot and wounded by another
officer during a sidewalk struggle Monday morning,
authorities said.
The suspect, Oswaldo Torres Quiroz, 22, of the Iselin
section of Woodbridge, was shot once in the abdomen
by Patrolman Johnny Washington, First Assistant Mon-
mouth County Prosecutor Marc LeMieux said during a
Monday afternoon news conference.
LeMieux said Washington fired his .40-caliber Glock
once in self-defense after Quiroz slashed the wrist of
Patrolman Carl Christie with a steak knife measuring 8
to 10 inches, then attempted to grab Washingtons weap-
on.
Moments before, Quiroz had attempted to stab
Christie in the stomach, but the officers protective vest
stopped the knife from penetrating his body, LeMieux
said.
Thank Godhe was wearing his vest, LeMieux said.
Quiroz, who is from Mexico, underwent surgery at a
local hospital and was listed in stable condition Monday

FREEHOLD TOWNSHIP Monmouth County offi-
cials are posting signs to slow motorists on a deadly
stretch of Kozloski Road, but a grieving father said
he wants a permanent safety solution put in place
there.
We dont need another loss. We dont need to grow
this fraternity anymore than it is, said Anthony De-
Luccio, Howell, of the four deaths on Kozloski Road
since August.
DeLuccio lost his daughter Noelle, 20, in a multi-
vehicle crash Aug. 19 on the span of Kozloski Road
between between Center Street and Route 33 Busi-
ness. The death of 7-year-old Jose Julio Tello in a col-
lision along the corridor Saturday night was a re-
minder of DeLuccios loss and renewed his desire to
prevent more deaths there.
The county on Monday began to place electronic
variable message boards on Kozloski Road telling
drivers to slow down and obey the speed limit. But
DeLuccio says a median would be a more permanent
and potentially life-saving solution.
Jose was in a Toyota sedan driven by his mother,
Juliana Alcaraz, 24, of Howell, when it crashed with
another vehicle on the same section of the road. Offi-
cials have not indicated a cause of that collision.
Noelle was killed along with her boyfriend, Nicho-
las Dever, 19, of Freehold, when their Volkswagen
crossed the road and collided with a vehicle driven
by Thomas J. Koller, 50, of Freehold Township. Koll-
er, in a Honda Pilot, was also killed.
