Introduction:

HDPEstands forHighDensity Polyethylene.It is sometimes also referred to as polyethylene highdensity

(PEHD)and seeshighimportvolumeintoIndiagivenitsvariousapplications.Ittakes1.75 kilogramsofpetroleum
(intermsofenergyandrawmaterials)tomakeonekilogramofHDPE.Knownforitslargestrengthtodensityratio,
HDPEfindsapplicationsinRaffia,BlowMoulding,Film,PipesandInjectionMoulding.HDPEishighlypreferredasa
sheathing material where it provides high resistance to water penetration. It is very hard, has low coefficient of
friction,andisabrasionresistant.Hence,itisusedinproductsandpackagingsuchasmilkjugs,detergentbottles,
margarinetubs,garbagecontainersandwaterpipes.

HDPE is principally used for the manufacture of highperformance pipe, blowmolded household and industrial
bottles,oilbottles,injectionmoldedfoodcontainers,consumerdurablesanddisposablegoodsandfilmgoodssuch
asgrocerysacksandmerchandisebags.

TheHDPEimportvolumeforthemonthofMarchstoodat31391MTS.Importshavebeenreceivedfromaround21
countrieswith around24 portsin India (sea/dry) being the destination points. Sea was the preferred mode of
shipment.

ImportsfromSaudiArabiawerethehighestat12763MTS(40.66%oftotalHDPEimportsintoIndiaforthemonth)
followedbyQatarat9988MTS(31.82%)andKuwaitat2840MTS(9.05%).

TheMiddle East regionaccounted formore than 90%of HDPE imported into India for themonth. Among other
regions, the highest amount of HDPE was imported fromSingaporein theAPAC regionand fromGermanyin
theEuroperegion.

PortPerformance

JNPT port, which is also Indias largest seaport received the maximum HDPE shipments in India, the volume
involved was17087 MTS(54.43%of total HDPE imported into India) followed byChennaiportat 2461
MTS(7.84%)andKolkata portat1807 MTS (5.75%). Among the dry ports,Bhusawal ICDhandled the maximum
HDPEimportvolumeat3589MTS(11.43%).

1) ShanghaiGoldenPhillipsPetrochemicalsrestartedoperationsonMarch3,2013atitsHDPEplantwhich
is located at Shanghai, China. This plant has a production capacity of 135,000 mt/year and was shut on
February18,2013owingtohighfeedstockcosts.

2) ChandraAsrirestartedoperationsonthenightofMarch5,2013atitsHDPE/LLDPEswingplantwhichis
located at Cilegon, West Java, Indonesia. This plant has a combined production capacity of 200,000
mt/yearandwasshutdownduetoabriefpoweroutage.

3) SinopecSabicTianjinPetrochemicalsonMarch15,2013shutitsHDPEplantlocatedinTianjincity,China
forabriefmaintenanceturnaround.Thisplanthasaproductioncapacityof300,000mt/year.

4) Daqing Petrochemical restarted operations on March 28, 2013 at its HDPE/LLDPE swing plant which is
locatedatDaqingcity,HeilongjiangprovinceinChina.Thisplanthasacombinedproductioncapacityof
550,000mt/yearandwasshutinDecember2012owingtotechnicalissues.
