Inspire Challenge Achieve Nurture

Our kindergarten students have really enjoyed
art class! They have learned about and designed
art like Dutch/abstract artist, Piet Mondrian.
Mondrian liked to use vertical and horizontal
lines and the primary colors of red, blue and
yellow. Kindergarten students have worked hard
gluing black strips of paper onto large white
paper. Later, they painted with primary colors to
fill in the spaces they created. They are very
excited about how their final art pieces have
turned out!
Our 6th grade students are currently learning
about Impressionist artists of the 1800s such as
Claude Monet, Auguste Renoir, Camille Pissarro,
Mary Cassatt and Edgar Degas. Artists of this
time would capture scenes of how people lived
their day to day lives. Some of them would paint
dancers in motion, beautiful flower gardens or a
mother playing with her small child. All time
favorite artist, Claude Monet would create
paintings of nature and how sunlight enhanced
the beautiful outdoor scenery he would observe.
6th grade students are currently painting
Impressionist scenes of their own. They, like
the master artists are trying to capture a
moment in time. They seem to be enjoying it,
too!

SP ECIAL AREA NEWSLETTER
P.E
Over the past couple of weeks, 4-6th graders
have been working on their frisbee unit.
Throughout the unit, students have had the
opportunity to practice the forehand throw along
with two different types of catches. Students
have also discovered a frisbee can be used for a
wide variety of activities and games. In class,
students were able to play an actual game of disc
golf using our disc golf course at Lincoln Trail
Elementary. While playing disc golf students
focused on many skills, for example, accuracy of
their throw, scoring, and lastly, strategy. During
this unit, students began to realize that physical
activity does not have to be painful or dreadful.
In fact, students found frisbee to be an exciting
activity that they can participate in at home or
outside of school. It is my goal to teach students
one activity that they enjoy and can participate in
for a life time. There are certain activities that
one can do only for a short period of time,
therefore, it is important to find an activity that
you can continue to participate in throughout your
adulthood.

\Media Matters!

It has been an extremely busy and fun week in the
library! We introduced the Scholastic book fair last
Friday with a silly skit that included Mrs. Gasaway
dressing up as a king. To enhance the medieval
theme, the media center was transformed into Sir
Read-a-lots castle in the Kingdom of Books. We have
had our largest selection of books and
more. Additions to this years fair have been a large
pre-school section, an expanded selection of adult
reads and cookbooks, a teen section for our upper
level students, and an entire section dedicated to
Lego books. By popular demand, we have several
choices of Minecraft books as well.
The book fair will be open tonight during teacher
conferences and then tomorrow for library
classes. If your child needs to make a last minute
purchase tomorrow and their class has already
visited the fair, dont stress. They just need to tell
their teacher and we will make arrangements for
them to make their purchases during recess or at
the end of the day.
Thank you for supporting the book fair! 100% of our
profits go towards purchasing additional books for
the library. It is essential for us to provide current
and appealing books to our students. By engaging
them in reading, we are improving their vocabulary
and comprehension skills . Avid readers tend to be
stronger spellers and writers, and they gain more
knowledge of the world. If you have any suggestions
for improving the book fair, please email Ms. Gasaway
your ideas at bgasaway@mail.nspencer.k12.in.us .

Media Music 4-6

What a great start to the year in upper level
music!

The 4
th
grade has been working hard to master
note values and singing posture. Mrs. Vaals class
won the Singing Posture Sing-Off and 5 stickers
for their class! Soon, we will begin to write our
own rhythms and play them on classroom
instruments.

5
th
grade is finishing up their genre projects and
presenting them. We have learned some really
interesting things about different genres. Soon,
I will be posting some of them up on my website
to see: musicwithmrscollignon.weebly.com. Make
sure to check them out!

6
th
grade has been reviewing phrases and
dynamics. We actually played a game they
remembered from Kindergarten to review
different dynamics in music. Soon we will be
putting this knowledge onto the new guitars!

All classes are anxiously waiting for our annual
Halloween game in music! It will be here the last
week in October!

\One of the things I find fascinating about
learning new skills in music class is seeing how
those skills apply to "real-world" performing
musicians. The 2nd and 3rd grade music classes
have been doing just that with two different
skills.

In 2nd grade, we have learned a new term:
ostinato. Ostinato is a repeated rhythm- similar
to the Energizer Bunny, it keeps going, and
going, and going... We have listened to
symphonies, rock and roll, bluegrass, and jazz to
see how ostinato can be used to unity within a
section of the music. Each student has made an
ostinato out of shapes, and will be turning that
into a rhythm, then adding a melody. I look
forward to hearing those performed soon!

The 3rd grade has been learning how to read
and write rhythms. We've been using call and
response and echo calling quite a bit in class to
learn new ways of using rhythm. They were
fascinated as we watched a recording from a
live performance using a lot of echo calling and
call and response.

Music K-3 Technology
Band
Band has really kicked off this year! We have a
number of new students who have made it
through the first 5 notes of their instruments!
Some of our vetrens will be starting sheet music
this coming week! Make sure to ask your band
student to show off what they have been doing
in class!
The technology classes have been working to
learn how to type with speed, accuracy, and
ease. If your child hasn't already shown you,
visitwww.typingclub.com to see how we've been
working on that skill set. It is a free resource,
and is excellent at teaching the typing process.
If a student can increase their accuracy and
typing speed from 5 words per minute to 15
words per minute, homework and testing time
can be used more efficiently. What would have
taken 60 minutes to type can be reduced to 20!
We've also been working on word processing,
formatting, navigating the internet, and what
some of the special keys on a keyboard do.

It is great to see students connect what we are
working on in class to what they experience at
home- through saving time on their homework,
to hearing something in music that they noticed
while they were listening at home.
