THE battered and bruised face of Sam Burgess has become an enduring image of last nights South Sydney Rabbitohs NRL
premiership win.
But some of these on field injuries make a fractured cheekbone look like a broken fingernail.

1. Ice hockey player Clint Malarchuk slits his jugular vein
In March 1989, Buffalo Sabres goalie Clint Malarchuk suffered one of the worst sports injuries ever when an opponents skate
sliced open his jugular vein.
Blood sprayed onto the ice and three players vomited in disgust as a trainer rushed to put pressure on Malarchuks gushing
wound.
Remarkably, he survived thanks largely to the 300 stitches needed to close the gash.

Earlier this year, a stomach-churning clip of basketballer Paul George breaking his right lower leg went viral.
In it, George is running down court when his right leg becomes caught under the basket stanchion and breaks.
The instantaneous injury appeared to snap Georges tibia at 90 degrees and felt, in his words, like gasoline was on my leg and
someone like a match.

Olympic Weightlifter Sa Jae-Hyouks London Games didnt exactly go to plan.
As the South Korean competitor was had successfully pulled off a 158kg lift in his first snatch attempt, but buckled under the
162kg weight of his second.

5. Long jumper Salim Sdiri hit with javelin
Intersecting athletics events almost turned deadly at the 2007 Rome Golden League meeting.
French long jumper Sali Sdiri had to be taken to hospital after Finlands Tero Pitkamaki javelin speared his side.
Medics on the scene said Sdiri has sustained a 4cm wound.

6. Ice skater Jessica Dube face slashed by partners blade
Canadian ice skater Jessica Dube was performing with her partner Bryce Davison at a Colorado competition in 2007 when a
spinning manoeuvre went wrong.
Davisons blade hit Dubes face mid-spin, leaving her on the ice bloodied and violently sobbing.
Its been estimated the skate was travelling at more than 60km/h when it struck Dubes face.

7. Wrestler Sid Vicious breaks leg
Given its a sport that mimics extreme violence, fans were left stunned when World Champion Wrestling competitor Sid
Vicious snapped his leg while trying to leap down on his opponent Scott Steiner.
It was a career-ending injury.

Peter Wallace made an impressive Origin debut in 2008 for the Blues, but his momentum was cut short when he suffered a
ruptured testicle in the series second game.
He played on despite the injury, and was later told by doctors he was lucky not to lose the damaged bodypart.

9. AFL player Nathan Browns snapped leg
A sickening clash during the 2005 season saw Richmonds Nathan Brown suffer a shocking, season-ending injury.
Melbournes Matthew Whelan had tried to legally smother Browns kick when he dove at his leg. Browns foot got stuck in the
turf.
He had to have a titanium rod inserted but was able to return to the game the next season.
