Terminology
• An Item Lifecycle is a sequence of Phases (e.g.

Concept, Design, Prototype, Production,
Obsolescence)
• Each phase represents a distinct stage in the
development lifecycle of the item.

Scenario
Vision Engines has been flooded with customer

complaints on its new series of High Performance
Diesel Engines. Investigations have shown that the
Piston used in these engines has not undergone
prototype testing and pre-production validations.
To avoid recurrence of such problems, Vision Engines

has decided to track Engines and Engine Components
through all the phases of their product development
and establish correct item management policies in
each phase.

Item Status denotes the state of the item and defines
the eligible activities that can be performed on the
Item.
Status Attributes set for each item status control the
actions that can be performed on the item.

Link Lifecycle Phase and Item Statuses
Linking Item Statuses to a lifecycle phase enables

definition and control of the eligible activities that can
be performed on the item, in each phase of its lifecycle
Example -
In the design stage, I should be able to define bills for
the item, but should not be able to manufacture it.
In the Prototype stage, I should be able to make the
item but should not be able to order it.
In the production stage, all activities
should be permitted.
Assign Default Status to Design Phase
– Setup workbench > (T) Items > (ST) Lifecycle Phases

– Search by ‘Phase’, enter the string “ADS%”, Click on the Go Button
– Click on the hyperlink for each Phase and proceed to assign the default status
– Assign the Status ‘ADS Design’ to the ‘ADS Design’ Phase > Apply

Associating Lifecycles to Item Catalog
Categories
Associating a lifecycle with an item catalog category
makes the lifecycle available for all items in the item
catalog category.
Lifecycles are inherited down through the item catalog

category hierarchy

Assign Lifecycle to Item Catalog Category
– Query for the catalog category ‘ADS Diesel Engines’ from the setup workbench
– From the vertical Sidebar, click on the lifecycles link
– Click on Add
– Select the ADS Engine Lifecycle and apply
Setup Site level Profile ‘Server Time Zone’
•Login as Profileoptions ; Password – sysadmin

•Set the profile ‘Server Time Zone’ to (GMT –06:00) Central Time
This is required since ADS Servers are at Austin (CT)
Setup Time-zone Preferences
•Open any PLM page > Click on

hyperlink for preferences
•Set the timezone preference to the
time-zone of your location
•For the class, we shall set this to (GMT
–8:00) Pacific Time
Verify Time-zone Settings on Desktop
•Open up the Date and Time Properties for your PC

•Verify that the time-zone matches with that set in the preferences and
matches the time zone of your location
•For the class, this has to be set to Pacific Daylight Time
Exercise I
Vision Engines builds New Diesel Engines by developing the
Engineering concept into detailed product designs. It then
tests the prototype in WIP, performs pre-production
validations and then releases the diesel engines to production.
Upon its end-of-life, the diesel engine model is retired.
Vision Engines wants to track the Diesel Engines through all
stages of their development and establish suitable controls
such that bills of material are allowed throughout the lifecycle,
WIP jobs can be created during prototyping and production
and engines are orderable once they are in production. Upon
retirement, no actions are permitted.
Using the PLM Solution, how can we start to solve this
business Problem.
Once you have built the solution progress the item through to
its prototype phase and demonstrate the lifecycle controls.

Information
Engineer’s develop the Engine Specifications for the Diesel

Engines through the concept and design phases.
Once design freeze is completed, the Engines are moved to
prototype testing and pre-production validations. The
Engine Specs can still be changed, but this requires
approval from the Product Manager. Once the Engines are
released to Production, the Engine Specifications cannot be
changed.
