Terminology

• An Item Lifecycle is a sequence of Phases (e.g.

Concept, Design, Prototype, Production,
Obsolescence)
• Each phase represents a distinct stage in the
development lifecycle of the item.

Scenario

Vision Engines has been flooded with customer

complaints on its new series of High Performance
Diesel Engines. Investigations have shown that the
Piston used in these engines has not undergone
prototype testing and pre-production validations.

To avoid recurrence of such problems, Vision Engines

has decided to track Engines and Engine Components
through all the phases of their product development
and establish correct item management policies in
each phase.

Exercise I
Track Items through their Lifecycle
Vision Engines builds New Diesel Engines by developing the
Engineering concept into detailed product designs. It then
tests the prototype in WIP, performs pre-production
validations and then releases the diesel engines to production.
Upon its end-of-life, the diesel engine model is retired.
Vision Engines wants to track the Diesel Engines through all
stages of their development and establish suitable controls
such that bills of material are allowed throughout the lifecycle,
WIP jobs can be created during prototyping and production
and engines are orderable once they are in production. Upon
retirement, no actions are permitted.
Using the PLM Solution, how can we start to solve this
business Problem.
Once you have built the solution progress the item through to
its prototype phase and demonstrate the lifecycle controls.

Recap Questions

Vision Engines develops Diesel Engines through various stages such as Design,
Prototype and Production, and wants to track the items through all these stages.
How would Vision Engines configure the system to enable this tracking?
Vision Engines wants to ensure that the Diesel Engines cannot be ordered
during the Prototype Phase. How will it establish this control?
The product manager has updated the lifecycle phase for a Diesel Engine from
Design to Prototype. He now tries to implement the phase change, but finds that
the record is not getting updated and the phase change is not happening. What
would he need to check before implementing the phase change?

Recap Questions

The Product Manager wants to progress a diesel engine which is under a

pending change, from concept to design phase. What would happen if he tries to
update the item phase? What would he need to do to update the item phase?
How can Vision Engines ensure that design documents for Diesel Engines are
not modified without authorization beyond the design phase?
What are the various types of item information, on which Vision Engines can
configure lifecycle change policies?
Vision Engines has established change policies for the Diesel Engine
Specifications such that a change order would be required to modify the
specifications beyond the prototype phase. Vision Engines now wants to change
the policy and permit direct updates for the diesel engine specifications in the
prototype phase. How will Vision Engines accomplish this?

Exercise 3
Managing Product Lifecycle with Lifecycle
Tracking Project

Vision Engines receives a contract from the Rail Road

company to supply 6000 KW Electric Engines, and desires
to manage the product development lifecycle.
They would like to define and track all the activities involved
in the product development through Design, Prototype,
Production and Service Phases
They would like to establish tight controls over cost, effort
and resources involved in the product development.
Using the PLM Solution, how can we start to solve this
business Problem.
Once you have built the solution process the item through
its lifecycle and promote it from the Design to Prototype
Phase.

Recap Questions

What are the some of the benefits, that Vision Engines would derive by using
Oracle Projects to manage item lifecycle?
When trying to create a lifecycle tracking project for a new electric engine, the
product manager did not find any suitable templates available for copying the
project from? What could have possibly gone wrong?
The Product manager wants to progress the Electric engine from Design to
Prototype phase, but finds that the Update Phase button is not available on the
ltem Lifecycle page? How will the Product Manager progress the item?
The Product Manager was trying to link an existing project to manage the
lifecycle of the Diesel Engine? He could not find any project for association?
What could have gone wrong?
The Product Manager wants to manage the Product lifecycle for a new Electric
Engine and a new Diesel Engine, using a single lifecycle tracking project? Is this
possible?
When updating progress, the task manager found that he could not enter actual
start and actual finish dates for the concept task? What is he doing wrong?
