Data Center
Modern data centers are the control rooms of todays
world. Especially the cabling as communication interface
must meet and fulfill highest requirements regarding
reliability.
page 16
Mobile Communication
Mobile telephony and comprehensive data services
are characterized by rapidly increasing data rates. The
cabling does not only have to keep pace in contrast it
has to anticipate future standards.

Cabling:
the BACKBONE
OF EVERY DATA CENTER
Since more than 20 years Rosenberger OSI has
managed data center projects of every size from
30 to 20,000 square meters of IT space. Therefore we can claim without exaggeration to know
exactly which challenges have to be met and
which risks are frequently and unnecessarily
taken. Because efficient cabling is the basis of
all and any processes and has to be considered
from the very beginning of the design phase of
the data center.
COMPREHENSIVE SOLUTIONS
FROM ONE SOURCE
Rosenberger OSI ensures for maximum operational reliability and performance for your data
center. By extraordinarily reliable components,
having passed strict quality assurance tests, by
well-founded know-how in consulting and short
reaction times. And by an excellent on site service you can rely on in every situation.

TO THE ANTENNA:
The place where billions of high-frequency signals turn into digital, cable-bound data streams
is the antenna mast. Right here, between base
station and antenna, the quality of the transmission between network and end-user is defined. Fiber to the Antenna (FTTA) solutions by
Rosenberger OSI ensure that not only current
but also standards to be expected in the future
will be met without compromise.

Modern media technology permits high-resolution motion pictures for almost all end devices.
And for sport events almost always live and in
real-time. Vast amounts of data must be processed on site in the mobile production unit and
delivered in the shortest time from the place of
origin to the consumers screen.

Optical fibers are generally considered susceptible to contamination and mechanical strain.
Anyone who has assured himself of the fragility
of a single optical fiber and specific attenuation
of a particle of dust knows the reason why.
Therefore we are really proud of the fact that
our products can also be found in mine shafts.

PreCONNECT
The Rosenberger OSI PreCONNECT cabling system consists of pre-connected loose tube cables
with up to 144 fibers called Trunk.
Already in 1991, as first company, Rosenberger
OSI introduced these innovative PreCONNECT
Trunks to the German market. Due to our longterm experience in the field of fiber optics and
the continuous further development of our
products, we still maintain an obvious technological advantage to our competitors.
48
ADVANTAGES OF PreCONNECT
TRUNKS AT A GLANCE:
Both cable ends are assembled with fiber
optic connectors on stepped fanout legs,
the fibers are measured in the factory.
Cables have robust cable dividers.
The standard coding resp. light propagation
of the legs is channelwise crossed (pairwise
flipped) for full-duplex systems A1 to B1, A2
to B2, etc.
Upon request we also manufacture the
PreCONNECT Trunks uncrossed (straight).
For secure installation the fiber optic connectors, fanouts and cable dividers are equipped
with tensile strength and crush resistant
installation tubes.
To accept the two factory assembled cable dividers, panels developed by Rosenberger OSI
are available with special square interfaces for
tool-free mounting of the cable dividers, for
tensile and torsion resistant installation of the
trunks.
The ready-to-use PreCONNECT Trunks result
in minimum installation time and permanent
reusability.
49
Technology
SAFETY
PreCONNECT Trunks are completely protected
against harmful environmental influences.
In contrast, the fibers in splice boxes, are subjected to air and can age (increased attenuation,
fiber fracture).
EASY TO MAINTAIN
INVESTMENT PROTECTION
PreCONNECT Trunks are reusable because they
can be re-installed easily.

SWITCH CABLING
In the recent last years the steadily rising packing
density in big switches and routers requires
individualized cabling solutions. For cabling of
units with high count of ports on smallest space
many important details must be considered, such
as later exchangeability of individual blades of a
fully cabled switch.
Rosenberger OSI looks back on 20 years of experience in data center cabling. During this time we
have developed various Best Practice cabling
solutions for many models and generations of
switches and routers.

LENS-CONTACTS
Lens-contacts are characterized by a special
connection technology which distinguishes itself from most other optical connector types by
its special performance: lens-contacts are not
sensitive to soiling and permit variable working
distance. For this reason they represent reliable
optical connection technology for harsh environments with high degree of environmental
influence.

Deficient coupling
Good coupling
An air-cooling system with high purity compressed air dissipates excess warmth from the
critical region at the fiber end and the connector side walls.
This additionally results in active cleaning of
the fiber surface and increases tool life.

TECHNICAL TERMS
A Absorption
B BACKSCATTERING TECHNIQUE
CLADDING
Outer layer of the glass material of an optical fiber. Its refractive index is lower than the index of the core material.
For fiber identification, the diameter of core and cladding
are imprinted, e.g. 50/125 m.
COATING
First protection layer on an optical fiber. It protects the
glass from humidity and mechanical influences.
CONNECTOR
Element to achieve a temporary interconnection of one or
more fibers. Either a male and a female connector are joined
or two connectors of the same or different type are mated
in an adapter.
CORE of a fiber
Usually, an optical fiber at least constists of a core surrounded by a cladding. Typically, the core material has
a higher refractive index as the cladding. Total reflexion
keeps the propagating light inside the core. For fiber
description, the diameter of core and cladding are imprinted, e.g. 50/125 m.
BANDWIDTH-DISTANCE-PRODUCT
Characteristic parameter of an optical fiber, usually expressed in MHz x km.
CORE GLASS
Material of the core of a fiber see core of a fiber.
COUPLER
Also power divider: a passive optical device which divides
optical power into several fiber paths.
C CABLE CORE
CRIMPING
Method of attaching a cable strain relief to a connector.
Cable elements are fixed by deforming a metal sleeve to a
defined shape.
D DECIBEL [db]
192
DOPING
By adding small amounts of special substances, the refractive
index of glass can be controlled.
ELECTROMAGNETIC WAVE
Propagating wave which consists of an electric and a
magnetic field component. Radio waves, X-rays and light
are electromagnetic waves. They only differ in the wavelength.
EMC (Electromagnetic Compability)
Branch of electrical engineering to study and control
electromagnetic interference.
F FERRULE
FIBER
Transmission medium, consisting of a glass core and a
cladding. Signal light can propagate through the core
material over long distances. Fibers are protected by
several layers and built into cables.
FIBER OPTICS
Technology which uses optical fibers for data transmission.
In addition, the technology is also used for energy transmission, e.g. laser light for material machining.
Fiber CHANNEL (FC)
Network technology for storage networks with gigabit
capability. It comes with its own protocol and uses twisted
copper wires or optical fibers as transmission medium.
FITL (fiber in the loop)
Fiber in a municipal network. According to the endpoint of
the fiber, it is distinguished between:
FTTB - fiber to the building
FTTC - fiber to the curb
FTTH - fiber to the home
FTTP - fiber to the pedestal
FTTD (fiber to the desk)
Structured fiber cabling in a building (LAN) with fiberpath
to the workplace.
193
TECHNICAL TERMS
INDOOR CABLE
Cable designed for installation inside buildings.
INSERTION LOSS
See ATTENUATION
INTERFEROMETER
Precision instrument which uses a technology of superimposing waves. In the fiber optic technology, it is used to
characterize the geometry of ferrules or fiber endfaces.
ISDN (Integrated Services Digital Network)
Communication standard for simultaneous digital
transmission of several services like voice, video, data etc.
MODE
Particular electromagnetic field pattern of a wave propagating in a medium. Different modes in an optical fiber
propagate with different speed.
MTP connector
Fiber optic connector according to the MPO standard. It
supports 12, 24, 48 or 72 fibers. MTP is a registered trademark of US Conec Ltd.
194
MULTI JUMPER
PreCONNECT FIBER or COPPER Trunk cables for multichannel point-to-point interconnections for indoor applications.
MULTIMODE FIBER
Fiber type which allows the propagation of several light
modes.
o OUTDOOR CABLE
OPTICAL WINDOW
Typical optical fibers have a minimum in attenuation at
wavelengths of 850, 1300, 1550 and 1625 nm. These frequency ranges allow transmission over longer distances
and are called optical windows.
OTDR (Optical Time Division Reflectometer)
Instrument which utilises the reflection pattern of optical
pulses to measure the characteristics of a fiber link.
PreCONNECT
Brand of the customized fiber optical cabling system by
Rosenberger OSI.
R REFLECTION
RIBBON CABLE
Multi-fiber cable with multiple fibers running parallel.
These cables have typically a flat design.
STRENGTH MEMBER
Element in a cable material which absorbs bending moment and/or tensile force.
u UNIT OF HEIGHT
WAVELENGTH
Spatial period of a wave. Visible light has a wavelength
between 380 and 780 nm in vacuum. In the fiber optic
technology, light with a wavelength of the optical windows is used for data transmission.
WAVELENGTH DIVISION MULTIPLEX (WDM)
Several data streams are transported over one fiber by
assigning different signal wavelengths. Dependent on the
number of signals launched into one fiber, the method is
called Coarse Wavelength Division Multiplex (CWDM) or
Dense Wavelength Division Multiplex (DWDM).
SINGLEMODE FIBER
Fiber type which allows the propagation of one mode
only. Usual dimension is 9/125 m. Singlemode fibers
cause less dispersion than multimode types and therefore
can be used for higher data rates and longer distances.
SPLICE
Permanent connection of a fiber, made by fusing or by the
use of an adhesive.
SPLITTER (also power splitter)
Passive component to divide optical power from one fiber
to several fibers see coupler.
