Reflections on Mark 15:33-47

The focus on this section focuses on Part 1 of our deepest longing and need in Advent and the coming of
Christ- we do not simply need a king. We need the Son of God to accomplish something on our behalf. We
don’t simply need to be led- but to be redeemed. The tearing of the curtain, the confession of the
Centurion, and ultimately Jesus’ cry to the Father ultimately reveal the heart of the gospel. We do not only
have a king who leads us into righteousness, but the Son of God accomplishing all righteousness for us.
This in the end is what we must have- it is the ultimate meaning of Advent- and the ultimate fulfillment of
our longing.

Order for Public Worship

Musicians begin playing instrumental music at approximately 6:00 and finish at approximately 6:06 as Brian or Dan or
whomever come forward to introduce the Call to Worship.

1) Call to Worship
Reading from Isaiah 55:1-4
Come everyone who thirsts, come to the waters; and he who has no money, come, buy and eat! Come buy
wine and milk without money and without price. Why do you spend your money for that which is not bread,
and your labor for that which does not satisfy? Listen diligently to me, and eat what is good, and delight
yourselves in rich food. Incline your ear, and come to me; hear, that your soul may live; and I will make with
you an everlasting covenant, my steadfast, covenant love for David. Behold I make him a witness to the
peoples, a leader and commander for the peoples.

Let us worship Christ.

1 or 2 songs (first set should have 4 songs)

2) Confession of Sin- Give the community a few minutes to confess their sins before God individually and then call us
all to pray the following together (musician):
(from Psalm 40:11-13)

Do not withhold your mercy from me, O Lord;

may your love and your truth always protect me.
For troubles without number surround me;
my sins have overtaken me, and I cannot see.
They are more than the hairs of my head, and my heart fails within me.
Be pleased, O Lord, to save me;
O Lord, come quickly to help me.

Song (Asking for mercy, needing grace)

3) Assurance of Pardon (read by Musician over Congregation)

(from 1 Peter 2:22-25)

He committed no sin, neither was deceit found in his mouth. When he was reviled, he did not revile in
return; when he suffered, he did not threaten, but continued entrusting himself to him who judges justly.
He himself bore our sins in his body on the tree, that we might die to sin and live to righteousness. By his
wounds you have been healed. For you were straying like sheep, but have now returned to the Shepherd
and Overseer of your souls.

Thanks be to God.

Song (Celebrating God’s Mercy, Celebrating God’s goodness)

Song of Response #1
Song of Response #2

8) Creedal Confession (Apostle’s Creed)

I believe in God, the Father Almighty, Maker of

heaven and earth.

And in Jesus Christ, His only begotten Son, our Lord;

who was conceived by the Holy Spirit,
born of the Virgin Mary,
suffered under Pontius Pilate,
was crucified, died, and was buried.
On the third day he rose from the dead;
He ascended into heaven,
and sits at the right hand of God the Father
Almighty;
from there he shall come again to judge the living
and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit,

the holy catholic church,
the communion of saints,
the forgiveness of sins,
the resurrection of the body,
and the life everlasting.

AMEN.
