From the Pastors Desk Todays gospel is a parable again. Like last Sunday these stories are difcult to understand for people today. We are not the audience. Both last week and this week it is the Scribes, Pharisees, Priests and Elders who are addressed. These were the religious leaders and so, this week, like last, Jesus is critcal of them and is, through the parable, defning religion within a stronger current of love, mercy and justce. The parable today is what I call the assassin tenants. It is a story which describes Gods history with Gods people. It is a sad story. God has taken care of us with complete tenderness. We, Gods people, were given the chosen vineyard. And God was hoping to make of us a model community of justce and faithfulness. We were to be a light for others to follow. However, those entrusted with such high hopes went about killing one another and the prophets sent by God to harvest the fruits of a more just life. Finally, in an incredible act of love, God sent them Gods own Son. But the leaders of the people made an end of him. What could God do with a people who betrayed Gods hopes in such a blind and stubborn way? The religious leaders that are listening atentvely to the story respond spontaneously in the same language as the parable: the lord of the vineyard cant do anything but put such tenants to death and put his vineyard in the hands of others. Jesus quickly presents a conclusion that they were not expectng: I tell you then that the kingdom of God will be taken from you and given to a people who will produce its fruit. Commentators and homilists have frequently interpreted Jesus parable as a re-afrmaton of the Christan church as the new Israel to follow the Jewish people that, afer Jerusalem was destroyed in 70 AD, was dispersed throughout the world. This is a bit fanciful. We might forget that the parable is also talking about us you and me. A more honest reading of the text forces us to ask ourselves serious questons. Are we producing in our contemporary tmes the fruits that God wants of Gods people justce for the excluded, solidarity, compassion towards those who sufer, forgiveness and mercy? God does not have to bless a sterile Christanity Christanity light or cheap grace from which there is no real fruits like what God was hoping for. God does not have to identfy with mediocrity, inconsistencies, sinfulness and a lack of fdelity to the gospel. And, to be frank, if we do not live lives that respond to Gods expectatons, God will keep opening up new paths to the work of salvaton with other people who can produce the fruits of justce. National Day of Prayer and Fasting The Bishops of Australia invite us all to pray earnestly for the Synod on the Family taking place in Rome 5th to 19th October and especially to join in a Natonal Day of Prayer and Fastng on Friday 10th October. We ofen read and talk about a religious crisis, the secularisaton of society and the weakening of religious practce. This is all true. We can see that it is happening. But it is happening on our watch so to speak. Will not God prepare the path that makes possible the birth of a Church that is more faithful to the project of Gods reign? Perhaps this crisis is necessary in order to bring about a Church that is less powerful but more evangelical; less numerous but more given to build a more human world? Will not new generatons arise that are more faithful to God? The Star of the Sea
You never crossed waters or slept in a boat but sailors who struggled to keep ships afoat, turned to you Mary and asked you to be a light on their journeys the Star of the sea.
Ref: Ave Maria, Star of the sea, guide me to Jesus, show him to me. Ave Maria, Star of the sea, guide me to Jesus show him to me.
The church like the boat of St Peter goes forth to bring the good news to the south or the north, some tmes we worry way out on the deep is Jesus stll with us, is Jesus asleep?
Mary, we go on our journey of life, its highs and its lows and its joys and its strife, all that we ask when our journeys are done is to share in the glory of your blessed Son.
Words and music by our own Paul Geraghty, and was writen to commemorate the 50th Anniversary of the Blessing of the Fleet. 4

Volunteer Garden Co-ordinator The Forster Community Garden was established in 2007 with 'seed' funding from the State Government as a community capacity building initatve.
Since then the Forster Neighbourhood Centre (Forster NC) has managed to develop and grow their own garden as well as support the establishment of other community gardens, produce a manual for preschools to establish gardens (see: www.fnc.org.au) and educated over 500 residents in how to grow their own organic food.
The garden hortculturalist is on site Tuesday mornings to direct garden volunteers and teach people how to establish their own gardens and grow food organically.
The Forster NC desperately needs a volunteer Garden Co-ordinator to work the hortculturalist and Forster NC Manager to advance the prospects of the garden, identfy and garnish funds and help with organising garden events. It is envisaged that the co-ordinator would work approximately 7 hours per week - it depends! Contact Trish 02 6555 4351 at the Forster NC if you're interested. Volunteer Driving Instructor Forster Neighbourhood Centre (Forster NC) is pilotng a driver training program to support young people gain their 120 hours driving experience.

In fact, in one of the Gospels his opponents call him a drunkard and a gluton. Of course, it was malicious defamaton but our Lord certainly loved gathering around the table with his followers and those who were despised by the elites of his tme. He would eat well and drink wine and enjoy it. Why? Firstly, Jesus was a shrewd judge of human character. He knew that a good wine makes people happy, loosens them up, helps sociability, encourages companionship. Our Lord wants us to be happy, not sour-faced killjoys. Secondly, Jesus had a poetc bent. One of his favourite images of Heaven was of a great wedding banquet, and every banquet or feast needs a good wine. (Think of Cana.) So, the meals he shared with people were antcipatons of Heaven, a foretaste of Heaven where He will be our Divine Companion. To have a good wine, one needs a well tended vineyard. And that is what todays Gospel is about. In the Jewish scripture, Israel is spoken of as the Vineyard of God. We can say that now the Church is the vineyard of God. God is the Landlord, we are the tenants. The vineyard is not ours to do with as we will. It is our job to faithfully tend it and make sure it bears good fruit, the fruit that God intends. If we are unfaithful, then, as is said in todays Gospel, God will fnd other people to carry on his plan, other tenants to tend his vineyard. And, perhaps, we can see that with the decline of the Eurocentric church and the surging numbers of Catholics in sub-Saharan Africa, and in Asia with the persecuted Church in Vietnam and China surviving and growing despite the severity of oppression. I think we may agree that the vineyard of the Church in Australia is not as fruitul as it could be. But I am not totally pessimistc about the situaton. The traditon of the Catholic Church is being transmited generaton to generaton, but more weakly than previously in our schools, and so depending to a large degree on faithful parents. All the more reason for our working harder to produce lives which can then be ofered to God along with the wine at every Mass as the words are recited: Blessed are you, Lord God of all creaton, for through your goodness we have received the wine we ofer you: fruit of the vine and work of human hands, it will become our spiritual drink. Our spiritual drink: Our Lord Jesus Christ gives himself totally to us under the appearance of wine because He wants us to be happy companions of His in the Kingdom of God. In antcipaton, He gives us a real foretaste of the great banquet, which is Heaven. The whole world is hungering and thirstng to join in that banquet, in that feast. Thank God for his new generaton of tenants in our own tme. Take up that privilege to work in the vineyard of the Church. Help prepare for the satsfacton of the hunger, the slaking of the thirst, of the whole of humanity. Fr Michael Tate 6

Response: Give thanks to the Lord, his love is everlastng.
Some sailed to the sea in ships to trade on the mighty waters. These men have seen the Lords deeds, the wonders he does in the deep.
For he spoke; he summoned the gale, tossing the waves of the sea up to heaven and back into the deep; their soul melted away in their distress.
Then they cried to the Lord in their need and he rescued them from their distress. He stlled the storm to a whisper: all the waves of the sea were hushed.
They rejoiced because of the calm and he led them to the haven they desired. Let them thank the Lord for his love, the wonders he does for men.
