Chapter 5
Word/Term Definition Memory Device
Consciousness our awareness of various cognitive
processes, such as sleeping,
dreaming, concentrating, and
making decisions; typically used to
describe being alert
When there is con(sciousness) man,
you need to be alert and aware to
make the right decision
Endogenous Produced from within a certain
origin
-geneous means yielding or
generating from
Seasonal Affective
Disorder
Controversial disorder in which a
person experiences depression
during winter months and
improved mood during spring.
The first letters spell SAD, reminding
me that the disorder is about
emotions.
Sleep Apnea a sleep disorder characterized by
temporary cessations of breathing
during sleep and repeated
momentary awakenings.
Those with sleep APnea need an
APP that alerts the police of their
condition because they may die due
to inability of breathing.
Dissociation a split in consciousness, which
allows some thoughts and
behaviors to occur simultaneously
with others.
Dis- means apart, which help me,
remind that this is a split in
consciousness.
Stimulants drugs (such as caffeine, nicotine,
and the more powerful
amphetamines, cocaine, and
Ecstasy) that excite neural activity
and speed up body functions.
Stim(ulants) is a twitching movement,
a result of stimulants exciting neural
activity
Manifest Content
of Dreams
the information that the conscious
individual remembers
experiencing
Manifesto tells me that this is
information related to dreams.
Biological Rhythm Periodic physiological fluctuations
in biological activities or functions
A rhythm is something that repeats
with regular succession, such as the
physiological fluctuations.
Suprachiasmatic
Nucleus
A pair of grain-of-rice-sized,
20,000-cell clusters in the
hypothalamus that receive light
input from the retina via the optic
nerve and regulate the body's
circadian rhythms
Sup- means over, reminding that this
is a large cluster, of 20,000 cells.
chia reminds me of chia seeds, a
food that help people cope with new
rhythms.
Premenstrual
Syndrome
A period of psychological and
hormonal changes that occur a few
days before the onset of the
menstrual cycle
Hormones change as if women are in
a stage of becoming men, the pre-men
stage.
Narcolepsy a sleep disorder characterized by
uncontrollable sleep attacks. The
sufferer may lapse directly into
REM sleep, often at inopportune
times
Narco- is a prefix that denotes illegal
activity, which is uncontrollable. It
also refers to sleep, reminding that
this is an uncontrollable sleep attack.
Psychoactive Drug chemical substance that alters
perception, mood, thinking,
memory, or behavior by changing
the bodys biochemistry
Today, people call each other
psychos if they are crazy.
Psychoactive drugs can change the
bodys chemistry, mentally creating
someone that is actually crazy.
Lucid Dream awareness that a dream is a dream
while it is happening
To be aware of your surroundings
you need light, luc means light in
Spanish. Luc-id dreaming is
awareness while dreaming.
Latent Content of
Dreams
according to Freud, the underlying
meaning of a dream
When we read a book, we read the
basic meaning, then LATE-r we
analyze the underlying meaning.
LATEnt is correlated with the
underlying meaning.
Entrainment the process of altering the free-
running cycle to fit a different
rhythm
When you train for something, you
are adapting your body to fit a certain
thing, entrainment is exactly that,
altering your cycle to fit a new
rhythm.
Melatonin A hormone manufactured by the
pineal gland that induces
sleepiness
Mela can be anunciated as mellow,
which is a feeling I get when Im
sleepy.
REM Sleep A recurring sleep stage during
which vivid dreams commonly
occur.
REM stands for rapid eye movement,
and my dreams are chaotic, as if my
eyes are moving rapidly in real life.
Hypnosis a state of relaxation in which
attention is focused on certain
objects, acts, or feelings.
Hyp(n)o is short for hippopotamus,
an animal that is generally relaxed.
This reminds me that hypnosis is a
state of such relaxation.
Depressants Drugs (such as alcohol,
barbiturates, and opiates) that
reduce neural activity and slow
body functions.
Depress means to pull something into
a lower position, so a depressant pulls
the neural activity into a lower state.
Consolidation A hypothetical process involving
the gradual conversion of
information into durable memory
codes stored in long-term memory.
-ation tells me that this is a process.
solid is durable, so together, it is a
process of making something more
durable, in this case being
information and memory.
