ANALYZING BOROBUDUR TEMPLE

BOROBUDUR TEMPLE
This monument was built both as a shrine to pray to
Buddha and place of pilgrimage to lead humankind to
the enlightenment according to Buddhas teaching.
However, Borobudur temple was abandoned
completely, buried under layers of volcanic ash and
jungle. It was not known to public until Thomas
Stamford Raffles discovered it in 1814. The restoration
of Borobudur became part of the first Five Year Plan in
1969 by General Suharto. Subsequently, Borobudur
temple was added to the list of UNESCO World
Heritage Sites in 1991.

Only Muslim is allowed to come to Mekkah.
The whole city of Mekkah acted as a transition space to
the Kaaba. Even though Mekkah is a developed city, but
it still maintaining its status as a sacred destination.
The function of the religious space marks the sacredness
of space. As can be seen, even the space outside the
Masjid Al Haram is used for praying purposes. This
shows that the whole space is a sacred space.
Many sellers and
photographers keep
approaching and
persuading the visitors to
buy souvenirs or taking
photographs.
Many tourists are being disrespectful to the monk by creating
loud noises and taking photos of them.
These behaviors happened because the tourist dont
understand the holiness of Borobudur. They thought that it is
for sight-seeing purposes. As such, their lack of understanding
disturb the experiences of the religious visitor.

The organizer of Borobudur should discipline the sellers
not to aggressively approach the visitors.
The holiness of the space can be improved by changing the
landscape surrounding Borobudur. Instead of the
portraying modernity and simplicity, the landscape should
have portrayed the savage of the forest. This will vividly
brought visitors into the past and create a better
introduction to Borobudur temple.
Based on the previous discussion that religious visitors are
disturbed by the tourist of Borobudur temple, Borobudur
temple should have a space to educate these tourists about
certain aspect of Buddhism.
