Victims of crime
have a voice
VICTORIAS
first
ever
Commissioner for Victims
of Crime will be a voice for
those whove suffered from
criminal acts, says Bacchus Marsh woman Noelle
Dickson.
Ms
Dickson,
whose
22-year-old daughter Sarah
Cafferkey was murdered in
November 2012, said the appointment of former Police
Association Secretary Greg
Davies as Commissioner
was a big step forward.
She said while the Victims of Crime Association
(VOCA) were fantastic, there
was really no other support
within the criminal justice
system for victims.
You dont know whats
available to you and youre
really left on your own. Plus
when youre in that state
youre very numb and have
no way of comprehending
it all. Thats why private
groups like Support After
Murder were formed, Ms
Dickson said.
Hopefully hell (Greg
Davies) be able to direct us
and let victims know where
Noelle Dickson.
we can go for support.
She said not only would
the commissioner be able
to help victims to access information and support, but
he could also recommend
changes to the law.
Ill hopefully be meeting
with him on November 9
at the Victims of Crime forum, she said.
Attorney-General
Robert
Clark said: As Commissioner, Greg Davies role will
be to ensure that the rights
and needs of victims are
recognised and respected
across all government agencies, support services are
well- coordinated and effectively directed, and victims
are readily able to find or be
Victims of crime will benefit greatly from the vast experience and knowledge of
all aspects of the justice system that Mr Davies brings to
office of Commissioner for
Victims of Crime, Mr Clark
said.
