There are many great answers here, but they missed my absolute favorite: the
nudibranch, a variety of sea slug. They have the highest "you're kidding me" factor
of any animals I've ever heard of. They look like art projects. If you saw them in a
sci-fi movie you'd be certain they came out of some animator's mind.

Some great informative answers here. I would recommend the name of the Rainbow
Lorikeet to be added to this list. What intrigues me most about this bird is that even
the best of the impressionists painters would have failed to imagine and paint
something as beautifully colorful as it on the canvas.

The tardigrade can be frozen and survive -272C
This woodfrog can withstand being frozen! It hibernates at -8C and then thaws out
again.

The Superb Bird-of-Paradise.
Found in the tropical rain forests of New Guinea this bird is definitely one among the
coolest creatures on earth. While there is nothing striking about the female it is the
male that will blow your mind. Owing to stiff competition among males to attract
females the bird has developed a spectacular feature where it fans out its feathers
that make it look like a smiley face and puts up a dance around the female. The
striking combination of black and electric blue make it look like a bird from Avatar's
imaginary world Pandora.

The Cobalt Blue Tarantula is known to moult 2 to 4 times per year until it reaches
maturity. After this it will only moult once or twice a year. This extensive moulting
process allows them to retain the beautiful, blue colour and, believe it or not,
regenerate any missing or damaged limbs. How cool would if humans could moult
every year to repair any broken bones or to get the colour back in your hair.

Caught in Gulf of Mexico.
I find this creature cool because:
A) It changes the perspective about monsters from mythical to factual!
B) It looks like a result of an orgy between The Great White, Piranhas and the Alien
(the double jawed creatures from the Hollywood movie Alien vs Predator).
C) How the mere physical features of this animal scare the living daylights out of
many of us. The fact being they only feed on crustaceans and celephods.

The Florida black bear. Very, very cool... even when there's one in the median of
the highway and he stops traffic, makes you late for work :)
The males are enormous-- the one pictured isn't as large as several specimens I've
seen. The biggest one I saw was on a county road on a drive in from out of state, in
a remote area. He was twice the size of the bear pictured and strolling alongside
the shoulder of the road in broad daylight.
The babies though-- they're adorable. The smallest one I've ever seen was about as
tall as a medium-sized dog and ambling after mama. :)
Chillin' out in Daytona... not just for the two-legged anymore!

One of the very few who would even consider approaching one of the most
venomous snakes in the world, the Western diamondback rattle snake. The fastest
bird in North America while on the ground(!), this bird is one of the forerunners for

this devilsih looking bird is found in the New Guinea and those two 'horns' are called
plumes which can extent upto 50cm.
2. Dancing Bird of paradise
Birds of paradise is a huge list, but this one loves to drop in few moves to impress
the ladies. The colours and the presentation is just too Magnificent . Also the image
doesn't show another characteristic feature of this bird, which is he prefers to cleans
the area around him before he starts the show. Neat!
3. Southern scoup owl AKA Shapshifter owl:-
This owl found in south africa has three different shapes for the sort of the species it
encounters. do watch the video its hilarious.
4. Blue bird of paradise:-
Regarded as the loveliest of all birds, the Paradisaea rudolphi has the tendency to
hang upside down to show case its breathtaking feathers.
and lastly
5. This little beauty:-
The most facinating one i have ever seen!
This manucode has glow-in-the dark feathers which are bioilluminators which he
uses to impress female species for mating. Also while its presentation it prefers to
make certain noise which is sort of a music for its presentation.
There are many more in the list which showcast absolute badassery! like the
Peregrine falcon which can reach upto 389 KMPH while diving for fish!.
Or the Crowned eagle which is the strongest bird on earth, capable of killing 4
times its weight

Tough not to get anthropocentric about this one, as by being "cool" I would imagine
it to be "sexy" in urban terms!!
My vote goes to an animal who is a complete package.
Ermine, that is famous for its fur, is what you would admire in a person (aha.. For
the gender sensitivity one had to maintain in public forum!!).
It can look really good and cute and even "beautiful" when needed; but is an athletic
devil that has lithe body that flows like fluid in motion. It is an animal so full of
SPUNK that kills prey larger than itself.
It is a weasel in white coat.... Cunning, smart, confident, aggressive... Designed to
succeed.
It doesn't need to depend on us to support it because it is an aggressive intruder
that manages to survive on its own.
Why mince words... Modern urban working woman, someone who can be
everything and still more?

This might not be the coolest in a direct way, but it really had a WOW factor that I

One, I think Meerkats are the coolest wild animals. Being an insectivore, they are

Ferrets are awesome. They are from the weasel family. They look like Dr. Seuss
characters with long bodies and short legs and skinnier up front and big in the

The Mantis Shrimp (Stomatopoda) is probably one of the most vibrant creatures
you'll see. Just look at it.
The mantis shrimp lives in warm, shallow water and typically grows to be between
15-30 cm in length.
It has two raptorial appendages which accelerate at the same velocity as a gunshot
from a 22 caliber rifle, fast enough to make the water around them boil.

water and use their long arms to swim with broad strokes.
The three-toed sloth can rotate its head nearly 90 degrees or more, and its mouth is
shaped in a way that makes the animal appear as if it's always smiling.
Sloths travel at 200metres an hour. How cool is that. Seriously "Festina lente".

The question was actually which the coolest looking animal was, not species. So
while the species might not be so cool, this specimen is really cool looking. Poor
