Good to Know...

Lights out?
Oh how we love pumpkin season. You
did know this gourd-ish squash has
its own season, right? Winter, Spring,
Summer, Pumpkin.... We anxiously
anticipate it every year. ~Trader Joes

A wonderful place to call home
Newsletter, Issue 8
FALL 2014
October-December
If you walk early in the morning or late in the evening
you may notice that some street lights are out or not
functioning. Cobb EMC services the street lights in our
community and these are paid for on your water bill.
Make a note of the location of the light out, be sure to write
down the house number and street name closest to the light
that is out.
To report a street light outage, please fill out the questions
online at http://www.cobbemc.com/content/outdoor-
lighting and someone will contact you within 24 business
hours.
I reported two lights on my walk route and they were fixed
within 48 hours!

Moving? Selling?
If you are selling, you might need to obtain a closing

Keeping your lawn properly watered in fall is important since the season can be dry. Lawns need about an inch of
water a week to thrive. Seeing some rain out the window can be misleading. Installing a sturdy rain gauge helps
you stay on top of rainfall and know when your lawn may be thirsty.
KEEP YOUR LAWN PROPERLY WATERED IN FALL:
Install a rain gauge out in the open where it can be easily seen. Check and empty weekly. Remember: Lawns
need an inch of water per week.
Set a sprinkler where it will cover your lawn and landscape without wasting a lot of water landing on pavement.
Use a timer to water efficiently.
To figure out the amount of time to run the sprinkler, place a can that is about an inch deep where it will
catch water from the sprinkler.
Open the spigot and turn on the timer to 15 minutes. When the timer turns the water off, check to see how
full the can is. Adjust the timing until you know how long the sprinkler must run to put out an inch of water.
Let the rain do your work for you. If youve had a half inch of rain in the gauge, use the timer to run the
sprinkler only long enough to put out another half inch.
Be sure to water the entire lawn.
TIP: Walk across the lawn. If footprints remain for a period of time afterward, its time to water.
BOO: Halloween fun!
This Halloween FCHOA would like
to start a new neighborhood
tradition.
Starting on October 15, 2014 each FCHOA
board member will BOO 2 houses in our
neighborhood by placing a goody bag or BOO
Basket that contains candy, trinkets, toys,
holiday paraphernalia, etc. totaling no more
than $10 each. Please keep the BOO going
by creating 2 goody bags or BOO Baskets
yourself and dropping them off at 2 more
homes in the neighborhood. Dont forget
to include the BOO Instructions and
BOO Picture. There are two copies in this
newsletter for you to cut out and use! They
are also available on www.ForestChase.org
Our goal is to have every house BOO-ed by
October 31, 2014. On Halloween, feel free to
call, email, or walk over and tell your neighbors
that you were the one to BOO them. This is
a great way to meet new people, establish new
relationships, and strengthen existing ones.
Happy BOO-ing!
PLEASE NOTE: this tradition is not about
what comes in the BOO Basket or goody bag.
It is about spreading and sharing a nice treat
and sweet gesture with our neighbors.
We understand that $20 may be a lot to donate
to this tradition, which is why it is only a
suggested amount and not a requirement.

Nature Notes by Roseanne Guerra, Secretary of FCHOA & Atlanta Audubon Master Birder
Bird Houses 101
Happy Fall, Forest Chasers!
After my Spring 2014 article on Bird Feeding
101, Ive had a few requests for Bird Houses
101, so here are some tips for enjoying bird
houses in Forest Chase. In our suburban
area, there are few old rotten dead trees to
provide nesting sites for cavity-dwelling birds.
Bird houses make a real impact on these
populations, and having a bird family in your
yard is such a joy.
Tip #1: Start with a basic
BLUEBIRD HOUSE. What
makes a bluebird house a
bluebird house? The diameter
of the entrance hole. Bluebird
populations plummeted in the
early-to-mid 1900s as non-
native birds surged, so houses
were designed with small
entrances to allow bluebirds
but not aggressive house
sparrows and starlings. In addition to bluebirds,
you are also likely to get other native birds
such as tufted titmice, chickadees, or wrens in
a bluebird box. Other common birds, such as
cardinals or robins, prefer an open nest and will
not use a box.
Tip #2: Protect it from
PREDATORS. Forest
Chase has plenty of
rat snakes, hawks,
possums, raccoons, and
house cats. All of these
predators can get at a
nest box mounted on a
tree (yes, rat snakes are
very good at climbing
trees). If it will break your heart to have your
baby birds devoured, mount your house on a
pole with a baffle.
Tip #3: Install a METAL PLATE to keep
squirrels or woodpeckers from widening the
hole. You can buy them cheap at BirdWatcher
Supply, and your house will last for many more
years.
Tip #4: Check out NESTWATCH.ORG. Click
on the Learn tab for a lot of
great information from Cornell
Lab of Ornithology.
Tip #5: Want
to branch out?
Consider a
SCREECH OWL
BOX. I havent heard
screech owls in Forest
Chase in years. It
sure would be great
to have them around
again, and we have
the right habitat.
Tip #6: Dont bother with BAT HOUSES,
unless you are willing to meet the bats
requirements. Bats are awesome critters, but
they are very picky about the temperature of
their roosts. They like it HOT. Boxes need to
be oriented in a certain direction and painted a
certain color to maintain the correct temperature.
Do your homework or dont spend the money.

Forest Chase is fortunate to have a community pool
and common area that the members of FCHOA own
and maintain.
Upkeep and repair
Our annual cleanup day is
planned for a weekend in
October. Keep an eye out for
an announcement. We know
that it will be a success!
Pool house in disrepair
Longtime residents Mike and Lesley Flahie noticed
that the pool house was in some serious need of repair.
Instead of just compaining
they offered to help remedy
the situation. Mike has
been working on/off for
over three months to
replace door frames, siding,
framing, shower head,
backing board,
mold and rotten
wood. ALL free
of charge from
labor! What a
labor of love that
is! FCHOA would
like to publicly commend this wonderful couple for
caring enough to make such an impact! AND... hes
not done yet...keep an eye out for more improvements
to come.
Member Owned Land
Private property signage was orderd
and will be hung soon. The common
area which extends from the parking
lot to the opposite side of the creek and out to the
street of Forest Way is all FCHOA owned land.
What does this mean? It means it is private property
belonging to its membership. It is the FCHOAs
responsibility to upkeep and maintain this land and its
contents. NOT the Board of Directors responsibility
but the COMMUNITY as a whole.
New tables, chairs, umbrellas and stands.
We are so proud to have saved enough throughout the
past 12 months by being thrifty with our budget to
purchase new pool furniture. Weve even submitted
claims to the vendor on some
broken items and received
replacements and have one
extra table and two chairs. This
furniture was costly and will be
protected by storing it in the shed.
COMING SOON at end of Oct.
Working hard for our community.

Below are some tips from the Cobb County police
that we can incorporate into our everyday life.
We are very lucky to be in a neighborhood where
we feel safe. However, we think we should
always be aware of what is going on around us.
As a walker, I often pass fellow runners with
headphones on and totally unaware of what is
going on around him or her.
Situational awareness is a mindset that anyone can
develop and incorporate into their everyday life
in an effort to contribute to their own personal
security.
The first step in developing situational awareness
is accepting that threats do exist, even in nice
neighborhoods.
There are several simple habits that you can
develop to enhance your situational awareness and
enable you to react quickly, if necessary:
Whenever you enter a building, pay attention
to the location of doors, windows, and
stairways.
Teach yourself to briefly scan any room you
enter and take note of who is in there and
what their body language is saying.
Avoid zoning out while you are commuting,

whether on foot or in a car, by visually scanning the
areas around you.
Limit the use of phones and other distracting devices
when in public places.
Lock doors and windows and set the alarm every time
you leave.
Keep garage doors closed and locked.
Remove all valuables and anything that would appear to
a thief to contain valuables from your vehicle every night
and lock the door.
Install outdoor security lighting, preferably on a timer.
If you go on vacation, have a friend or neighbor pick up
your mail and check on the residence.
Dont post vacation plans on Facebook or other social
media sites and dont post vacation photos until you
return.
Record Make, Model, and serial numbers to all firearms
and electronics and email the list to yourself.
