PLASMA ANTENNAS
When air or gas is ionized plasma forms with similar conductive properties to that of metals. Ionization can be induced by other means, such as strong electromagnetic field applied with a laser or microwave generator, and is accompanied by the dissociation of molecular bonds, if present.
Plasma can also be created by the application of an electric field on a gas e.g sun and stars.Plasma antennas are radio frequency antennas that employ plasma as the guiding medium for electromagnetic radiation. The concept is to use plasma discharge tubes as the antenna elements. When the tubes are energized, they become conductors, and can transmit and receive radio signals. When they are de-energised , they revert to non-conducting elements and do not reflect probing radio signals In an ionized gas plasma antenna, a gas is ionized to create a plasma. Unlike gasses, plasmas have very high electrical conductivity so it is possible for radio frequency signals to travel through them so that they act as a driven element (such as a dipole antenna) to radiate radio waves, or to receive them. Alternatively the plasma can be used as a reflector or a lens to guide and focus radio waves from another source Nagar Yuwak Shikshan Sansthas YESHWANTRAO CHAVAN COLLEGE OF ENGINEERING ( An Autonomous Institution affiliated to Rashtrasant TukdojiMaharaj Nagpur University) Hingna Road, Wanadongri, Nagpur 441 110. Some of its advantages are that they can be dynamically tuned and reconfigured for frequency, direction, bandwidth, gain and beam width, so replacing the need for multiple antennas .when non- conducting they do not reflect probing radio signals .They are resistant to Electronic warfare and cyber attacks At satellite frequencies, they exhibit much less thermal noise and are capable of faster data ratesAs soon as the plasma generator is switched off, the plasma returns to a no conductive gas and therefore becomes effectively invisible to radar.
