SALEM STATE PROFESSOR SPEAKS ABOUT CHINA TRADE AND NATIONAL IDENTITY

On Wednesday, October 15 at 7:30pm. the Ipswich Museum will welcome Dr. Dane A. Morrison,
professor of early American history at Salem State University as their Wednesday Evening Lecture
Series speaker. Dr. Morrison will speak about the topic of his recently-published book, True
Yankees: Americans, the South Seas, and the Discovery of National Identity, 1784-1844. His
research traces early American voyages to the East
Indies and exploring how representations of that
experience in the public sphere contributed to the
construction of an American national identity.
In addition to True Yankees, Dr. Morrison is the
author of A Praying People: Massachusett
Acculturation and the Failure of the Puritan Mission,
16001690, and the co-editor of Salem: Place, Myth and
Memory and the World History Encyclopedia, volumes
1113: The Age of Global Contact.

The Museums Wednesday Evening Lecture series is
generously sponsored by First Ipswich Bank. The
lecture is free for members, $10 for non-members. To

The Ipswich Museum was originally founded in 1890 as
the Ipswich Historical Society. Today, our collection
reflects more than 100 years of acquisition and
preservation by these early visionaries. We continue to
honor the original mission of the society to preserve
Ipswichs social, cultural, and architectural history
with the goal of making these treasures more accessible, more relevant, and more connected to our
day-to-day lives.
