In 2010 Alyssa quit her part-time job in a gift shop to begin Alyssa Smith Jewellery Ltd and has never looked back. A jewellery designer-come-businesswoman, Alyssa has turned her passion for creating beautiful pieces into a hugely successful business. She said: My main roles and responsibilities are anything from the day-to-day running of the business, to photographing jewellery, promotion, working on marketing and new designs, as well as working on bespoke jewellery for customers. All of that is done whilst being the brains behind the company too! Alyssa studied an Art and Design Foundation course, specialising in metal work, before going on to study a degree in Applied Arts and Marketing at the University of Hertfordshire. In the short time I was there I gained so much confidence because I was treated like an adult, rather than a school child. I learned lots of skills I did not know before including photography skills, which I still use day-to-day in my business. Alyssa has now come back to college as our Entrepreneur in Residence, working with both Business and Peter Jones Enterprise Academy students to share her experience and expertise, and mentor students with projects and their own business ventures. 18 19 How to apply Once youve decided which course is right for you, there are a number of ways to apply: ^ Pick up an application form from reception at any of our centres ^ Call us on 01462 424242 to apply by telephone ^ Visit our website www.nhc.ac.uk, find your course and apply online Travel to college for 2 Weve teamed up with the Uno bus to provide students with unlimited daily travel for just 2!
