Each year, for the last four years, Lake

Shore Public Schools has hosted a unique

event at its Taylor International School.
The International Summit is really about
getting these kids together and learning
about the different cultures, assistant su-
perintendent Donald Kling explained. This
year we have students from China, Spain
and Lake Shore here.
The event showcases the districts cut-
ting-edge foreign exchange program, and
allows students from all three cultures to in-
teract.
In years past weve done this summit
with German students, but this year its stu-
dents from Spain, Kling said. So, that
gives out students the opportunity to learn
about the Spanish culture, too. It really
gives them a chance to find out what life is
like in Spain, in China and in turn, it gives
the foreign students the chance to see what
its like here in the United States.
The summit consists of several phases in-
cluding speakers, a roundtable discussion,
a tour of the Taylor facility, and lunch with
food indigenous to all three cultures.
We have different activities scheduled,
he said. But its really about the students
communicating with each other, and learn-
ing from each other. This event is just a fo-
rum for them to do that.
Spanish students have been at Lake
Shore, with host families, since Oct. 2, Kling
said, while the students from China are at
Lake Shore for the entire year.

With the impending
election on the hori-
zon, voters through-
out the city will have
to decide not only on
candidates, but on a
variety of other issues
and proposals.
Voters in Lake
Shore Public Schools
district, for example,
will decide Nov. 4,
whether to renew a
non-homestead mill-
age or not when they
head to the polls.
The millage, which
has been renewed
twice before by vot-
ers, once in 2005 and
again in 2010, is a tax
levied on commercial,
rental and industrial
properties, as well as
second homes within
the school district.
There is no effect
on primary residen-
tial homes.
It isnt something
that effects residen-
tial homes directly,
Lake Shore Public
Schools Assistant
S u p e r i n t e n d a n t
Frank Thomas said.
But it does have a big
i mpact on the
schools, on the stu-
dents.
The millage is re-
quired by Proposal A,
which serves as the
states school funding
structure, if the dis-
trict hopes to receive
their full per-pupil
funding of $8,033.
Proposal A was en-
acted in response to a
1994 law passed that
eliminated all proper-
ty tax paid for
schools. The ap-
proved Proposal A, in
a nutshell, did three
things to public
schools.
First, it eliminated
the use of local prop-
erty taxes as a source
of school funding and
created a new state
education tax. School
districts began to get
per-pupil payments
from the state.
The state sales tax
increased from 4
cents to 6 cents on the
dollar. The extra two
cents was to go to the
school aid fund, the
state budget for
schools.
It also required the
states lowest-funded
school districts to re-
ceive a basic level of
education funding,
which raised the
amount they received
and significantly
closed the gap be-

Each year, students at
Violet Elementary take
part in one of the areas
most unique and success-
ful fundraising events.
The Violet Elementary
Fun Walk is an annual
event that raisers money
for the schools Parent
Teacher Organization.
This is our big fund-
raiser for the year for the
PTO, Violet Elementary
School Physi cal
Education teachers Lisa
Pecoraro said. I love to
help them out with it be-
cause its all about getting
up and moving.
The event is about mov-
ing, walking in particular,
Pecoraro said.
We walk and we
dance, and we learn more
moves every year, she
said. The kids really look
forward to it each year,
and they really seems to
enjoy it.
Parents can also join in
the fun, and many come
down to watch their child
take part in the effort.
I love to see that,
Pecoraro explained.
They get involved and
thats great.
Students from every
grade at the school,
Kindergarten thru fifth
grade, have a designated
time to head down to the
gymnasium.
We get to the gym and
we start out with some
dancing and moving
around, she said. Then
a part of it is getting out
and walking around the
track.
Violet has its own walk-
ing track at the school,
and students use is as
part of the event.
The event is asks par-
ents, relatives, neighbors,
anyone who wishes to do-
nate to designate a flat
donations amount.
Its straight pledges,
Pecoraro said. Its not
based on time or distance
or anything like that. Its
just straight pledges, and
were very thankful for all
those who donate. It real-
ly makes a difference.
The school generally
raises between $15,000
and $18,000 for the event,
which is vital to the orga-
nization.
All of the funding com-
ing in goes right back to
the kids, she said. Its
there all year long for
them also. Its such a
huge help and so impor-
tant.
The school doesnt real-
ly participate in any other
form of fundraising
events such as candy
sales, popcorn or wrap-
ping paper.
This is the big one for
us, she said. And be-
cause of the success of it,
and the generosity of par-
ents and everyone else,
whenever we, as teachers,
might need something
that we feel will really
benefit the children, we
can come to the PTO and
they hardly ever say no to
us. Its a wonderful rela-
tionship that really bene-
fits the children. Without
this event, we wouldnt be
able to do that.

The timing was really
good this year, Kling said.
Because the Spanish stu-
dents arrived in time to be
a part of all the homecom-
ing activities. The Chinese
students are here for that
already, but the Spanish
students also got the
chance this year. It was re-
ally something we were
glad worked out the way it
did.
The Spanish students
return to Spain by the end
of the week, and students
from Lake Shore get the
opportunity to travel to
Spain, and China, in April
as part of the program.
Kling said events such
as the International
Summit are a great way to
bridge the divide between
cultures.
I just had a student say
to me how great it was, he
explained. Because she
never understood what
was going on with the
Chinese program because
she is in Spanish. Now,
shes finding out about that
because shes here and has
the opportunity to talk to
the students directly.
tween l ow- funded
schools and others.
I think there is a mis-
conception out there that
schools just receive the
full funding from the
state, Thomas said.
Thats not the case at
all. The state assumes
districts are going to levy
a millage and if they
cant, then that money
isnt replaced by the
state.
For Lake Shore, that
amounts to more than
$500 per pupil or about
$2 million of the dis-
tricts annual revenues.
According to Lake
Shore Public Schools,
homeowners taxes will
not increase should the
renewal pass, nor de-
crease if it does not pass.
In terms of how it ef-
fects businesses, the re-
newal passing means
businesses located with-
in the district will keep
paying the same millage
rate as theyve been pay-
ing for nearly two de-
cades, 18 mills.
City council approved
the purchase of a 2014
Dodge Charger, costing
$22,699, replacing a vehi-
cle that was damaged be-
yond repair in the recent
floods that ravaged the
city.
The bulk of the pur-
chase price was covered
under the citys insurance
policy, but nearly $4,500
remained in order to com-
plete the sale.
The vehicle that was to-
taled had in excess of
100,000 miles on it and
was slated for replace-
ment soon.
It actually could be a
blessing in disguise, Lt.
Anthony Pietrzak told the
council. That vehicle was
set to be changed out any-
way.
A total of three vehicles
in the fleet sustained dam-
age in the flood, but two
were deemed repairable
by the insurance company
and are being repaired.
The damage to all three
came as a result of water
getting into the air intake
system of the vehicles,
which, as councilman Ron
Frederick pointed out, is
lower than most normal
vehicles.
Were not out there fly-
ing around in puddles,
Pietrzak said. This one
just turned into a parking
lot and he didnt realize
there was a drop off.
The funds were taken
from the citys motor pool
budget.

Above, Karissa Letwin was one of the first students to tee it up at the putt-putt golf course.
The course at Lake Shore High School promises to be a popular lunchtime destination for students and
staff.
There was just a
bunch of junk in here,
Lake Shore High School
Building Trades instruc-
tor Chris Mazzola said
of a courtyard at the
school. And now its a
great place for the kids
to come and have a good
time during lunch.
Mazolla and his staff
of students transformed
that junk-ridden court-
yard just off the schools
cafeteria into a premier
9-hole putt-putt golf
course that students and
staff, can enjoy.
We stared this last
spring, Mazzola said.
The idea was just to do
something with this ar-
ea. It was just loaded
with busted cement ta-
bles and junk, really. So,
I started looking around
and I said, I like to play
golf, and I think we can
get 9 holes in this
space.
Of course, many
thought Mazzola was
crazy, and the process
wasnt as linear as many
would imagine.
It took almost a year
to get it approved, he
said. We had to make
sure the fire department
came in and gave it the
go ahead, the school
board, there were a lot
things that had to get
taken care of even be-
fore we started putting
the course together.
Persistence and pa-
tience paid off, and be-
fore long, Mazzola and
his building trades class
were moving forward
with the project.
I started designing
the holes based on what
we had to work with,
Mazzola explained.
Some of the holes, we
had to recontour the ce-
ment, and every hole
has special cement that
had to be skim-coated.
To do it right, the pro-
cess is involved. Most
people probably arent
aware of that.
That involved process
included laying out ev-
ery hole ahead of time to
a shape, contour and
look that the group
thought would work,
outside brick border in-
cluded.
Next, they had to
chart it on a piece of pa-
per so they knew where
to put the bricks, which
were recycled from
bricks that once resided
in a patio at the school,
and such back in the
right place.
Then, they had to pick
it all up, power wash ev-
erything, put everything
back and glue it in place.
Once the bricks were
in place, they had to
skim-coat the inside of
the hole with the special
cement, which was ex-
tremely difficult to work

with given its quick cure
time, then clean it up,
and more.
I knew what the pro-
cess was going to be,
Mazzola said. And I
knew it was going to be
challenging, but it
would be worth it. I
knew that, too.
The next decision was
to drill out the hole, ce-
ment the cup to the right
level, and next was the
putting service.
We were really fortu-
nate, Mazzola ex-
plained. The guys at
Service Flooring had the
perfect stuff and gave us
a really good deal on it.
It putts really well and is
really durable stuff. We
also got a good deal on
someone to come out
here and put it down for
us, too. It all worked out
really well.
Meanwhile, the class
is also building brick-
paver patios for the stu-
dents to sit and eat on
while they watch their
classmates play. Scoring
posts and a starters
shack was also part of
the project.
The putt-putt course is
more than just a fun few
minutes for students, its
also a source of revenue
to clubs and classes
throughout the school.
Lets say the photog-
raphy class wants to run
the course for a week,
he said. It costs $1 a
round to play, and once
they putt the ball into
the 9th hole it doesnt
come back. So, at the
end of the day, when I go
in and retrieve the balls,
if there is a 100 balls in
there, there should be
$100. Building trades
gets 25 percent for
maintenance, and the
rest goes to the photog-
raphy class or whoever
is running the course for
that week.
Mazzola also is selling
sponsorships for the
course, where a pair of
signs will be displayed
on the course.
Weve got a few sold
already, but we need
18, he said. Once we
sell the sponsorships itll
be all paid for by itself.
The course was a
great experience for the
class, Mazzola said.
It was really good for
the students to be a part
of, he said. And its
something that is going
to be here, and going to
be used and enjoyed for
a long time. Weve got
things left to do, and we
will make improve-
ments, but weve got it
going now. Im really
happy about how it
turned out, especially
when you think about
what this space was be-
fore we started this. Its
great.

Although many adults
dont like to admit it, ev-
erybody likes to dress
up for Halloween.
When the doors of the
Bruce Post 1146 VFW
open at 7:30 p.m.
Saturday, Oct. 25, every
adult in town has the
chance to dress up for
Halloween and per-
haps even win a prize
for it.
The posts annual
Halloween Costume
Party encourages guests
to dress up in their fa-
vorite Halloween cos-
tume for a night of food,
fun and laughter.
This is something we
have done for years,
Bruce Post commander
Tim Litz said. And ev-
ery year its something
that everyone really
seems to enjoy and have
a good time at.
Litz said that cos-
tumes are not required,
but the vast majority of
guests get dressed up.
It isnt required at
all, he said. But that
just adds to the fun to
see what every one
comes dressed as, and
what costumes they put
together.
Prizes for the top
three costumes will be
handed out at the event,
music and raffles are al-
so part of the night, he
said.
The money raised
from the $20 admission
charge, which includes
food and beverages, is
put to good use by the
post throughout the
year.
Its a fundraiser for
the post, Litz said. The
money we raise helps us
to do what we do for vet-
erans all over the area,
and in the city. People
coming to events like
this one, and having a
good time, really make
what we do possible.
Ti ckets for the
Halloween Costume
Party are available at the
door the night of the
event.
"You just need to show
up," Litz explained. "And
be ready to have some
fun.

Huskies capture MAC White crown
PHOTOS BY JOHN MCTAGGART
The contest was a hard-fought one, with Grosse
Pointe North. Pictured, Lakeview's Ryota Yoshida
fights for the ball in the first half. The Huskies
wrapped up the regular season with a Macomb Area
Conference White title as a result of the victory
against GPN.
Lakeviews Lukas Manarolla charges aftert the ball.
Lakeview battled against Grosse Pointe North, edging the Norsemen 3-2.
The Lakeview boys
soccer team needed a win
at Grosse Pointe North to
win a Macomb Area
Conference Whi te
Division championship
last week.
The Huskies fell behind
2-0 at the half, but roared
back with a solid second
half to win 3-2 and claim
the title.
The boys showed so
much heart tonight and to
come back from the two-
goal deficit to win the di-
vision title is tremen-
dous, head coach Simon
Miners said.
The Huskies knew
they faced a backup
goalie and a Norsemen
squad playing without
their leading scorer.
However, they didnt
have the focus in the
opening half and fell be-
hind 2-0.
It was disappointing
to come out so flat in
such a big game, but they
played great soccer in
the second half. Winning
the division title is great
By Bob St. John
Special Writer
for us and now we have
some momentum head-
ing into the state play-
offs.
Lakeview entered the
game with a two-point
deficit to Macomb
Dakota. Earlier in the
week, Lakeview lost 2-1
to Dakota to set up the
huge game against
North.
Had Lakeview tied,
they would finish one
point behind Dakota
and finished second.
I told the boys at half-
time you came too far to
not win it. I told them
they had to come out fo-
cused and ready to play
soccer, which they did."
After Miners halftime
chat, the Huskies were a
totally different team.
They dominated the fi-
nal 40 minutes and used
two goals from junior
August Hunter and one
from junior Lukas
Manarolla to win the
game and capture the
MAC White Division ti-
tle.
The strong second
half prevented disap-
pointment and instead it
was jubilation as the fi-
nal seconds ticked off.
Lakeview finished 8-3-
1 for 25 points in the
MAC White Division
and 11-4-1 overall as the
regular season conclud-
ed.
Lakeviews last divi-
sion crown came in 2011
when it won the MAC
Blue with a 10-1-1 mark.
The season came to an
end for the Huskies in
the district round, how-
ever, falling to Fraser
High School Oct. 13 in
the opening round of the
state tournament.
The 2-1 defeat
wrapped up the cam-
paign for the Huskies.

8A ST. CLAIR SHORES CONNECTION THURSDAY, OCTOBER 16, 2014
SPORTS
Since day one of prac-
tice Aug. 13, the goal of
head coach Colette
Buckberry and the
Lakeview boys tennis
team was to make it to
the state finals.
A 1-4-1 dual meet re-
cord in the Macomb
Area Conference Blue
Divison gave way to an
improved 5-5-1 overall
record heading into the
division tournament.
The Huskies played
well in the division tour-
nament, placing fourth
with 32 points behind
Fraser, Warren Mott and
Chippewa Valley.
We wanted to make
the state finals and we
improved throughout
the season, Buckberry
said. It wasnt easy, but
I kept telling the boys to
believe, stay focused
and work hard because
it will pay off.
It paid off in a big way
l ast weekend as
Lakeview made a late
run to finish second
with 10 points in last
weekends Division 2
regional tournament at
Lakefront Park in
Grosse Pointe Woods.
The runner-up finish
gave the Huskies a spot
in the D2 state finals at
Kalamazoo College.
Every point was hard
fought and Im proud of
the boys for coming
through with some big
wins today, Buckberry
said. It was a great day
of tennis for us and now
we get to play in the
state finals.
With two matches in
question, Dearborn
Edsel Ford had 9 points
and needed just one
more to get the needed
10 points.
Lakeview was third
with 8 points, but
played Edsel Ford in the
semifinals at No. 3 and
No. 4 doubles.
The Huskies No. 3
doubles team of Matt
Hinze and Evan Harvey
pulled off a win, giving
the Huskies 9 points,
and 10 minutes later,
the Huskies jumped for
joy as the No. 4 doubles

sending the Huskies to
the state finals.
Lakeview had two
others play in the finals,
Brandon Logan at No. 2
singles, who lost 6-0,
6-1 to Grosse Pointe
Norths Jack Williams,
and Lucas Sliwinski at
No. 3 singles, who lost
6-0, 6-0 to Grosse Pointe
Norths Tyler Scoggin.
The Huskies other
singles players are
Jordan Eckman at No. 1
and Jake Belmore at No.

Other doubles teams
competing were Cody
Ball and Paul Willard at
No. 1, and Tim Hill and
Collin Columbo at No.
2.
Grosse Pointe North
won the regional title
with a perfect 24 points,
while Edsel Ford fin-
ished with 9. Other
teams competing were
Port Huron, 5 points;
Warren Woods-Tower, 4
points; and Sterling
Heights, 2 points.

Lakeview is the Division
2 state finals Friday,
Oct. 17, and Saturday,
Oct. 18, at Kalamazoo
College.
The Will Rogers Institute
has awarded a $50,000
grant to St. John Hospital
and Medical Center for the
neonatal intensive care
unit to help provide equip-
ment to offer care to fragile
infants in the metropolitan
Detroit area.
Two 3100A high fre-
quency oscillatory ventila-
tors to help treat about 450
infants hospitalized in the
NICU each year is to be
purchased. This critical
component to the NICU
can reduce ventilator-asso-
ciated lung injury by pro-
viding a constant distend-
ing pressure and normaliz-
ing the end expiratory lung
volumes. The equipment
features electromagneti-
cally driven pistons and is
the only one FDA-
approved for early inter-
vention in the treatment of
neonates in respiratory
Grant to aid St. Johns NICU
failure.
St. Johns NICU has
been caring for premature
and critically ill infants as
small as one pound for
more than 40 years. One of
the first level III NICU facil-
ities in Michigan and the
only one on Detroits east
side, it has the highest sur-
vival rate worldwide. The
NICU is undergoing a $12
million expansion and ren-
ovation to significantly en-
hance space, privacy, com-
fort and the overall patient/
family-centered experi-
ence. The newly expanded
Mary Ann Van Elslander
Neonatal Intensive Care
Unit and Special Care
Nursery is expected to be
completed in February.
St. John is among 14 re-
cipients of a Will Rogers
Institute grant for neonatal
ventilator and pulmonary
equipment throughout the
country this year.
The Will Rogers Institute
is a program of the Will
Rogers Motion Picture
Pioneers Foundation, a
charity named after hu-
manitarian, philanthropist
and entertainer, Will
Rogers. Originally a hospi-
tal for tuberculosis-strick-
en vaudevillians, The Will
Rogers Memorial Hospital
became a national training
facility for doctors treating
patients with tuberculosis
and the Will Rogers
Institute was created.
Goodrich Quality
Theaters, with 29 movie
theaters in Michigan,
Indiana, Illinois and
Missouri, partners annual-
ly with the Will Rogers
Institute to raise funds for
its neonatal equipment
fund through various sum-
mer promotions. With its
contributions to Will
Rogers Institute, Goodrich
thereby assisted in funding
grants such at the one giv-
en to St. John. To learn
more about St. Johns
NICU or to make a dona-
tion, contact Sherry
Augustine at (313) 343-
7481 or visit stjohnprovi-

NICUcampaign.
From left, Reed Simon, Christina Blumer and
Samantha Stepleton and Brian Eichstaedt recently
toured the NICU at St. John Hospital and Medical
Center and presented the grant funds that helped
purchase two high frequency oscillatory ventilators
like this one for infants.

Know Your Skin
By Lisa A. Manz-Dulac, MD
101614
Do you regularly check your
skin?
Everyone should do a skin
exam at least every 6-8 weeks.
And if you or family mem-
bers have a history of skin
cancer, it is especially impor-
tant to do regular self skin
examinations of your entire
body, from your scalp down
to the soles of the feet. But
what do you look for?
A good tool to use is the
ABCDEs.
A - an Asymmetric shape
is ofen a sign that a mole
could be skin cancer
B - Borders of suspicious
lesions are ofen uneven with
jagged or notched edges
C - Lesions that have mul-
tiple shades of colors or are
very dark in Color should be
brought to your physicians
attention
D - Large moles with a
Diameter larger than the
eraser on a pencil may also
indicate a malignancy
E - Watch for lesions that are
starting to Evolve or change
in one of these areas. Most
benign lesions do not change
over time.
Benign lesions are typically
round or symmetrical.
Once you bring a lesion to
the attention of your doc-
tor, she/he may recommend
biopsy, destruction, excision
or other complete removal,
or you may be advised to
continue to watch the lesion,
depending on the diagnosis.
If you have a suspicious le-
sion, or to learn more about
self skin exams, contact
your dermatologist, or call
us at Eastside Dermatology,
Dr. Lisa A. Manz-Dulac and
Associates.

2015 Corvette Z06
The 2015 Corvette Z06 rejoins the Corvette lineup for 2015 with a stronger alu-
minum frame than previous models, an aero package designed to produce per-
formance-enhancing downforce and an all-new, supercharged 6.2L V-8 engine
with 650 horsepower and 650 pound-feet of torque. That makes it the most
powerful production car ever from General Motors and one of the most power-
ful production cars available in the United States. Z06 models are offered in
1LZ, 2LZ and 3LZ trims. The car arrives in area dealerships early next year
with a manufacturers suggested retail price starting at $78,995 the convert-
ible model will start at $83,995.
10A ST. CLAIR SHORES CONNECTION THURSDAY, OCTOBER 16, 2014
his week,
were driving
the impres-
sive 2015
Chevy
Impala, a roomy five-pas-
senger sedan featuring
Chevys new 4G Internet
WIFI hotspot entry
price: $27,060; price as
tested, $35,725.
The WIFI connectivity
comes standard on all
Impalas, be it entry level
or top class. WIFI is free
for three months of 3G
usage after which the
owner must decide to
continue the service or
cancel.
Up front, youre proba-
bly wondering why some-
one would pay General
Motors for a WIFI
Hotspot versus a
Smartphone, which I first
thought, too. However, if
you read on, youll find
out the advantages of
Chevy WIFI.
Starting at $27,060, the
full-size Impala is a fine
representation of General
Motors modern-day se-
dan building abilities. It
delivers roomy surround-
ings, a long list of stan-
dard equipment and a
legacy that dates back to
1958.
Today, Impala is an evo-
lutionary masterpiece on
the receiving end of nu-
merous top automotive
Best Buy nods.
Available in LS, LT and
LTZ trims the Eco ver-
sion is dropped for 2015
our 2LT sedan came
with a 305 horsepower V6
engine producing 264
pound-feet of torque and
lots of pep. Entry LS
models feature a 2.5-liter
Inline-4 that delivers 196
horses and 186 pound-
feet of torque. Both en-
gines are coupled to six-
speed automatics with
EPA numbers of 19 city
and 29 highway for the
V6 and 24 and 33 for the
Inline-4.
Built in Detroit, every
Impala features 10 air
bags and strong capsule
like occupant protection.
This results in perfect 5
Star government crash
ratings.
As for the WIFI
Hotspot, owners can con-
nect up to seven note-
books, laptops or other
devices and then enjoy up
to 50-feet of strong WIFI
signaling. With a 50-foot
radius, your Hotspot de-
vice will deliver up to 3G
of data easily. After the
three month free trial,
pricing ranges from $5,
200 megabyte; to $30, 30
gigabyte per month; or
receive a best buy 10 gi-
gabyte for $150 for 12
months.
Thus, to answer the
aforementioned question
comparing Smartphones,
Chevy stresses it utilizes a
much stronger antenna
and theres never a worry
about battery life. Of
course, you can charge
your Smartphone in the
Impala, but the signal
strength from Chevys
Hotspot will always be
stronger, especially if you
have seven devices at-
tached.
Our Impala LT2 arrived
with 19-inch Goodyear
tires on nice al-
loys, Mylink HD radio
with eight-inch color
screen, 11-speaker Bose
surround stereo and
much more.
I especially like
Impalas use of turning
knobs for radio and air
conditioning instead of
cumbersome touch
screen controls found in
so many cars today. This
allows drivers to keep
their eyes on the road in-
stead of fumbling around
making sure you are
touching properly.
Our tester featured five
options totaling $4,695.
One of them, a $1,045
convenience package, in-
cludes a rear back-up
safety camera. One would
think by this time all man-
ufacturers have gotten
the message that the
back-up safety camera is
a vital part of automobile
safety and should be stan-
dard.
The other options in-
cluded a $1,090 premium
audio package; $890
Advanced safety package
with rear forward colli-
sion and lane departure;
and a $790 LT Advanced
Mylink Navigation pack-
age and keyless start.
Your Chevrolet dealer
awaits your visit to ex-
plain all features and op-
tions.
On the road, Impalas
fully independent suspen-
sion and powerful 305
horse engine propels our
tester from zero to 60
mph in 6.8 seconds, so
theres lots of power on
tap.
Important numbers in-
clude a wheelbase of
111.7 inches, 3,845
-pound curb weight, 18.8
cubic feet of cargo space
and an 18.5 gallon fuel
tank.
Likes: Power, handling,
interior, safety, Bowtie
legend.
Dislikes: Optional
back-up camera an op-
tion, large B-Pillar hin-
ders sight.

tomotive columnist.

When it comes to
fighting cancer, the
Barbara Ann Karmanos
Cancer Institute is
among the best cancer
centers nationwide.
The Karmanos Cancer
Institute is the only hos-
pital in Michigan fo-
cused solely on cancer.
Dedicated to the preven-
tion, early detection,
treatment and eventual
eradication of the dis-
ease, Karmanos is a
Nat i onal Cancer
I nst i t ut e- desi gnat ed
comprehensive cancer
center, one of just 41
centers in the United
States and the only such
center in the tri-county
area. This distinction
means that Karmanos is
a leader in treating all
types of cancers: offer-
ing the latest treatment
options and clinical tri-
als; educating and rais-
ing awareness to help
prevent the disease and
diagnose it early when
its most treatable; and
researching and discov-
ering new treatments.
Led by President and
CEO Gerold Bepler,
M. D. , Ph. D. , the
Karmanos Cancer
Institute strives to pro-
vide its patients with the
best treatment options
with the best possible
outcomes. Karmanos
main campus in Detroit
is just minutes away
from the Grosse Pointe
and St. Clair Shores
communities. Karmanos
also has a treatment
center in Farmington
Hills, and provides radi-
ation at the Monroe
Cancer Center. Patients
have increased access to
advanced cancer care
exclusive to Karmanos.
This includes approxi-
mately 300 clinical tri-
als, cancer prevention
programs and multidis-
ciplinary teams of can-
cer specialists, offering
a comprehensive ap-
proach to treating the
disease, even the most
complex cases.
Patients can be as-
sured that they will re-
ceive the very best care
and the most up-to-date
treatments found any-
where.
Karmanos outstand-
ing history and reputa-
tion dates back to 1943.
Ranked as one of
Americas best hospitals
a c c o r d i n g t o
WomenCertified, Inc., it
was recently honored
with the national
Womens Choice Award.
Kar manos Bone
Marrow Transplantation
Program is one of the
largest and best centers
in the country and is one
of six centers nation-
wide with some of the
best survival outcomes
for related and unrelat-
ed stem cell transplanta-
tions. Karmanos Phase I
Clinical Trials program
is a leader in the field,
one of only 14 National
Cancer Institute-funded
Phase I programs in
North America and the
only such program in
Michigan.
Knowing where to
turn when you or your
loved one receives a can-
cer diagnosis can make
all the difference.
Know your familys
health history sharing
it among your loved
ones could save a life.
Talk to your physician
about treatment options.
Dont hesitate to seek
a second opinion, even a
third.
Ask your physician if
youre a candidate for a
clinical trial. Karmanos
has access to new thera-
pies often not offered at
other hospitals.
The compassionate
staff at Karmanos un-
derstands that treating
the patient takes more
t ha n me di c i ne .
Supportive services are
available to patients as
well as their loved ones.
Karmanos is commit-
ted to cancer care and
research excellence that
leads to the next stan-
dard of care, benefiting
cancer patients here and
around the globe.

An opportunity to be
in business for yourself
just opened in the
Village.
My Salon Suite
opened last week, offer-
ing beauty professionals
with the opportunity to
own their own business
without the large up-
front costs and risks as-
sociated with building
and running a salon.
Every My Salon Suite
location includes private
spacious suites that are
well appointed with
high-end luxury ameni-
ties and top-of-the-line
salon equipment for dif-
ferent specialties of
health and beauty pro-
fessionals ranging from
hair stylists to nail tech-
nicians, massage thera-
pists, spa professionals
and skin treatment ex-
perts.
Dan Roman, who
owns the Village loca-
tion with his wife,
Melissa, said the loca-
tion at 16824 Kercheval
has 19 individual suites,
with two geared for mas-
sage therapy and 17 for
cosmetology, barbers,
make-up artists, stylists
and more. Three are
double-suites, which in-
clude two styling chairs.
The industry is
changing and this is a
big concept down
south, Roman said.
Were very excited to be
in Grosse Pointe.
The suites are well-ap-
pointed with high-end
sal on equi pment ,
Roman said, and a week-
ly fee for the space in-
cludes utilities, includ-
ing water, electricity,
heat, air conditioning
and Wi-Fi.
They bring their
product and scissors and
theyre good to go,
Roman said.
Suites include:
Tilt-out appliance
center with blow dryer
holder, 4 iron holders (2
flat irons). dual clipper
pockets, and hidden
cord storage;
Adjustable styling
chair;
Separate color bar
with luxurious granite
counter and back-splash
and stainless steel sink
in every suite, so you
will never have to mix
color in your shampoo
bowl;
Adjustable color tube
storage;
Hood hair dryer and
dryer chair;
Plenty of electric out-
lets;
True-color parabolic
ceiling lights to mini-
mize color distortion;
Individually adjust-
able airflow in each
suite, so you can control
the temperature in your
own suite;
Dimmable wall sconc-
es, so you can create the
ambiance you want for
your clients;
Resilient flooring to
minimize leg and back
strain;
Floor-to-ceiling walls,
for complete privacy
from your neighbors.
Roman said My Salon
Suite will complement
other salons and servic-
es in the Village.
My Salon Suites
founders were stylists
themselves and salon
owners for over 25 years
owning more than 50 sa-
lons and managing more
than 500 stylists. In 2007
they realized the salon
industry was changing,
they created the concept
of My Salon Suite in
New Orleans in 2007.
There are five loca-
tions in Michigan, in-
cluding one in Grand
Rapids and four in
Metro Detroit.
One advantage is set-
ting up the suite the way
the stylist wants it.
Walls in the suites are
floor to ceiling, so they
reduce noise, odors,
dust and other clippings
wont be going from
suite to suite.
My Salon Suite offers
24/7 secure access, al-
lowing stylists to set
their own hours.
Other advantages to
owning your space at
My Salon Suite include:

Fall Special!
We have all heard the
alarming statistics. This
generation is the first to be
predicted to not outlive
their parents due to obesi-
ty and the associated co-
morbidities.
According to the
Centers for Disease
Control and Prevention,
in 2012, more than one-
third of children and ado-
lescents were overweight
or obese. In efforts to ad-
dress this health epidemic
in Detroit and the metro
area, Beaumont Health
System created a child-
hood health promotion
program called Health
Hero.
Health Hero is 45-min-
ute interactive presenta-
tion demonstrating the
importance of healthy
behavior choices, physi-
cal activity, and nutri-
tion. This is not a basic
lecture.
Geared toward first
through third grade, stu-
dents play games and
dance to transform into a
Health Hero.
The program focuses
on choices students make
from the time they wake
up to the time they get to
bed. Health Hero helps
students build a founda-
tion for a healthier life-
style and empowers them
to make informed deci-
sions when it comes to
their decisions about
food, physical activity and
behaviors.
As of Sept. 1, Health
Hero has been imple-
mented in 10 schools and
organizations in Grosse
Pointe and has reached
more than 800 students in
the metro-Detroit area
since it was launched in
April.
As the 2014-2015
school year begins,
Beaumont Health System
continues to bring Health
Hero to surrounding com-
munities.
Contact program coor-
dinator Hanna Reising at
Johanna.Reising@beau-

bringing the Health Hero
presentation to a school

Learn about toxic stuff in the environment
Q.
What is environmen-
tal health and how
does it affect my everyday
life?
A.
We might think of
trees, parks and wild
animals when we hear the
word, environment. But
the study of environmental
health how the environ-
ment affects human health
often focuses on the
built environment our
homes, schools, and ofc-
es. We spend 90 percent of
our time indoors, amongst
couches, desks, carpet,
curtains, paint, windows,
electronics, and toys.
Therefore, its important to
consider what makes up
our surroundings. Some of
the stuff in our homes and
buildings contains chemi-
cals linked to cancer, repro-
ductive problems, and cog-
nitive impairments.
Q.
What are two simple
things I can do in my
home to reduce my fami-
lys exposure to toxics?
A.
Open the windows
of your built envi-
ronment as much as possi-
ble to allow for sufcient
air exchange. Chemicals
inside are not exposed to
direct sunlight, wind and
rain and therefore, do not
break down quickly.
Wiping shoes well or sim-
ply leaving them at the
door keeps pesticides, oil
and other pollutants away
from living spaces.
Q.
Where can I learn
more about how my
environment may affect
my health and my family?
A.
The Ecology Center
will present Our
Toxic Stuff, hosted by The
Family Center, at 6:30 p.m.
Thursday, Oct. 16, at
Brownell Middle School.
Environmental health edu-
cators with the Ecology
Center discuss the chemi-
cals in our everyday envi-
ronments, their health ef-
fects, and the top 10 ways
to reduce exposure. There
will also be a short ques-
tion and answer period.
Q.
What should I bring
to the Ecology
Centers Our Toxic Stuff
event on October 16th?
A.
At the end of the
seminar, the Ecology
Center will offer free test-
ing of one to two products
for each attendee. We will
bring a portable x-ray uo-
rescence device, which im-
mediately detects toxic
chemicals in consumer
products. You can bring in
any childrens products (in-
cluding toys, lunch boxes,
raingear and backpacks),
pet toys, dishware or other
household items youd like
tested for toxic chemicals.
MelissaSargent is an en-
vironmental health educa-
tor with the Ecology Center,
a local non-profit organiza-
tion. For more information,

Recent On Call Dental
Trauma with St. John ER:
Recently, I was the Endodontist on call with
the St. John ER Doctors and with a team
approach we had a positive emergency
outcome.
This was an emergency service with a St.
John team approach to save a 12 year old
childs upper six maxillary anterior teeth
from cuspids, lateral and central incisors
following a serious auto accident with facial
and mouth injuries.
All six teeth were traumatized with 3 of
the front teeth having crown fractures, one
rotated and pushed up into the mouth, and
the two cuspids halfway out of the dental
sockets.
By having the cuspids replanted and
emergency facial injuries treated and
applied discomfort managed from the ER,
St. John provided an immediate referral
back to our Endodontic offce to administer
defnitive tooth saving Root Canal treatment.
Endodontist treatment approach to dental
injuries from sporting events/other dental
accidents enhances a rewarding opportunity
to save teeth for a lifetime!!!!!

Dental Trauma
Sports Injuries:
Dental trauma to children and young
adults from dental and facial injuries
during recreational sports may result in
compromising esthetics and even the loss
of teeth.
In 2014, The National Youth Sports Safety
Foundation (NYSSF) forecasts that more
than 3 million teeth will be knocked out in
sporting events.
Traumatic dental injuries present different
challenges for both children and young adult
patients and their dentists. Current evidence
allows the Endodontist provider to manage
situations, in the past, often resulted in
crippled dentition and unsightly appearance.
Appropriate treatment can turn what at frst
glance looks like a hopeless situation into
a very satisfactory outcome for the child
or young adult patient. The Endodontist
Specialist can play an important role in team
approach to treating patients with traumatic
dental injuries.
