Dissertation Question:
How has the Commercialization of the Ideal
Body Image affected Eating Disorders?
A critical analysis of theories and evidence, regarding the
idealisation and commercialisation of the female body image,
and its subsequent impact on eating disorders.
The analysis aims to conclude shedding light on the way
eating disorders have been portrayed by the media, as well as
dealt with by sufferers in order to achieve an acceptable and
ideal body image.

Research indicates that combinations of cultural trends, societial
expectations and economic factors often can hinder or assist
disordered eating habits across a wide variety of individuals and
characteristics.

Primary Research:
How do you as an individual perceive your
own body image?
This doesnt have to be a specifically negative
or positive answer, however truth is important.
I am trying to gain an overview of how a portion
of society feel about their own body image at
this moment in time, gaining primary research
on societal views as well as personal views.
You can remain anonymous if you wish. Please
just simply state age and gender.
Results:
81 responses -
Male and Female Respondents, 16 - 70 years old.
Honest responses due to anonmitiy, with a broad range of view points
and perceptions.

Mini-Rationale:
I intend to show, inform and educate both males and females on
the commercialisation of the female body image over the past 114
years, showcasing how considerably the ideal body image has
changed as result of synthesising sociocultural, economic and
environmental issues, in return leading to disordered eating and
disordered views of a healthy body image in present day times.
Information will be collated in a hardback, perfect bound coffee
table book, which will act as a seamless timeline of images and
information, showcasing and highlighting both obvious and
subtle female bodily changes, and trends.

The Evolution of The Ideal Female Body Image focuses visually on how the ideal body image has
changed over the past 100 years. Ever-changing sociocultural, economic and environmental
issues, have in return led to disordered eating and disordered views of a healthy body image in
the 21st Century.
Acting as a seamless timeline of imagery, this book acts as a guide highlighting bodily changes,
trends and key areas of history, which have shaped the ideal body of the present day.
