emitted by a candle, oil lamp

and ghee lamp

Introduction
Lamp has immense importance in Hindu
Dharma. Lighting a lamp means awakening
the energy of soul in the self. Our scriptures
have recommended lighting of lamps during
various religious rituals. The use of oil or
ghee has been prescribed for lighting a lamp
and the candle does not fnd mention
anywhere. Why is it so To understand this!
we will see here the e"ect of a candle! an oil
lamp and a ghee lamp on the
environment. This research will help us
understand and appreciate the thought that
has gone into the simple act of lighting a
lamp during Deepawali.

)n this test! we record the changes in the
environment caused by the presence of any
ob.ect/ however! since the environment
changes constantly! recording it under
which the ob.ect is to be placed (known as
the 01asic 2 blank reading3- has to be taken
before the testing. Hence! before testing the
candle! oil lamp and ghee lamp! reading of
the empty space was taken and
observations noted/ then these were placed
and readings noted again.

The following can be inferred from these
observations.
#. The candle is not benefcial at the
spiritual level/ but the oil and ghee lamps
provide spiritual benefts. Hence! Hindu
culture recommends use of oil or ghee
lamps (and not a candle- in religious actions.
&. $ubtle benefts are also considered by
$anatan Hindu Dharma in the performance
of religious actions .
*onclusions
Depending on the ob.ective! light an oil or a
ghee lamp (and not a candle- in religious
rituals
+ *andle : Today we see that ceremonious
oil lamps are not lit with another oil lamp
but with a candle. ' birthday
is celebrated by blowing out candles on a
cake. Wa% of the candle does not burn
completely! due to which TamaBpredominant
vibrations in the environment get activated
to a greater e%tent. Hence! the candle is
considered TamaBpredominant from the
spiritual perspective. 's a result! tamasik
vibrations spread in the environment when a
candle is lit or when a lamp is lit with a
candle.
,+ )il lamp : Oil contains Aa.aBpredominant
vibrations. Aa.aBpredominant waves of
action are necessary to provide momentum
to a task. The 9ame of the oil lamp awakens
and keeps active the waves of action of
Deities in the universe/ hence! ade<uate oil
is poured in the lamp on the stage for
lighting a ceremonious lamp.
*+ !hee lamp : =hee contains $attvaB
predominant vibrations/ hence! a ghee lamp
is used as prescribed by the scriptures to
o"er 'rati to Deities or $aints. Hindu
Dharma has deeply studied every aspect of
man3s e%istence and environment.
'ccordingly! man has been advised to abide
by a code of conduct. He gets the beneft of
sattvikta (7urity- when he abides by Dharma
and as a result! the in9uence of Aa.aTama
on him reduces.
