Task 1 A- Analysis the front cover of a

magazine

v
Main Cover Line- Here, the
main cover line is almost
bigger than the actual
masthead. This suggests that
this edition is special as the
main cover line is attracting
more attention than the
actual masthead. The font is
in capital letters and even
though it is white, it stands
out against the background.
The words Dizzee Rascal are
in a large, white font with a
black shadow so they stand
out against the background
more than any other words.
It even stands out more than
the masthead.
Masthead/ Genre- The
masthead on this magazine is
NME, it immediately stands
out as it has a red font with
both a white and black border.
The other cover lines are all
white and the only other red
font is on the strapline. The
fact that the masthead is so
small shows that the magazine
is very well known. The
masthead has also broken
away from codes and
conventions by not having the
masthead stretch all the way
along the top of the front
cover. It is hard to define one
genre. NME usually focuses on
alternative rock and indie
music however Dizzee Rascals
genre, who is the model for
this issues cover, is more grime
and hip-hop.

Footer- The footer consists of names of individual
bands and artists who may feature in the magazine.
However, the artists featured are from different
genres. For example, Jay-zs genre would be hip-hop
whereas Paramore would be pop-punk/pop-rock.
Main Image- The main image
slightly covers the masthead.
Because of the camera angle,
the image almost looks 3D. A
medium shot has been used;
the whole body can be seen
however, he is not standing
up, like most models for the
main image do. This means
the magazine has broken
away from codes and
conventions by not having
him stand up straight.
Puff- The puff on the front
features an article that is in
the magazine.
Barcode, Price Dateline and
Issue Number- The barcode
and price are in the corner.
This means they are out of
the way but still visible. The
issue number and dateline
are also by the barcode, so
they are all together.
Colour scheme- The colour
scheme throughout the
magazine is white, red and
black. These colours are
gender-neutral so the
magazine appeals to both
men and women. The
colours chosen are good as
they are bold and stand out
against any background.

Strapline- The strapline is
one little line at the top of the
front cover. However, the
magazine has once again
broken codes and
conventions as the strapline
was more than one little line
at the top and is even with
the masthead. The strapline
here features the names of
bands featured in the
magazine.
