Reading and

analysing a model.
Controlled writing,
such as writing
individual sentences
using a substitution
table
Freer or guided writing
(such as using notes
given to construct one
or two of the
paragraphs in a letter -
the rest being already
given)
Free writing of a
parallel text.
STEPS IN USING
GENRE APPROACH
TO TEACH WRITING

1.
Deal with the meaning of the text through
discussion
2.
Students should look at how the text is
structured.
3.
Unpack some of the language in the text
e.g: students identified the tenses used in the
text (present/past)
4.
Drilling correct sentences
Think about how to use the language correctly
and appropriately.
5.
Learners then prepare to write their own story.
They are encouraged to use the same structure,
but the content is personal to them and their
experiences or knowledge.
HOW STUDENTS
SHOULD USE GENRE
APPROACH

Read the
model for
meaning first
Focus on the
organisation.
-Different genres of
texts have different
organising principles
Unpack the
language.
Provide practice
to help students
gain more
control of the
language
Help students to
put together
what they have
noticed to help
them write their
own text.
KEY STAGES IN
USING GENRE
APPROACH

BENEFITS PROBLEMS
Students generally appreciate the
models or examples showing
specifically what they have to do
linguistically.
It underestimates the skills required to
produce con-tent, and the other
concern is that it neglects learners self-
sufficiency (Byram, 2004)
Provides students with an
understanding of why a communication
style is the way it is through a reflection
of its social context and its purpose.
Places too much emphasis on
conventions and genre features, also
less helpful for students in discovering
the texts true messages due to the
targeted aspects of the specified genre.
Genre approach brings together formal
and functional properties of a language
in writing instruction, and it
acknowledges that there are strong
associations between them.
Limiting learners creative thoughts
about content and is criticized in that it
overlooks natural processes of learning
and learners creativity
Studying different types of text and
structures will form a prior knowledge,
and make it easier for students to
produce acceptable structures in their
writing tasks.
Produce passive students as teachers
spend class time explaining how
language is used for a range of purposes
and with a variety of readers.
It also allows students to be-come more
flexible in their thinking and eventually
to realize how authors organize their
writings.
Students may end up writing genres as
meaningless reproduction

BENEFITS AND PROBLEMS IN USING GENRE
APPROACH IN TEACHING WRITING

USING A GENRE
APPROACH FOR WRITING
WHAT IS GENRE APPROACH?

Emphasizes on the type and
purpose of the writing.
EXAMPLE:
- Letter
- Narrative
- Reports
HOW TO USE IT?
takes a model and gets the
students to analyse these
features, before producing
something similar.
WHY?

Students can perceive the
differences in structure and
form and apply what they learn
to their own writing.
