TRAINING PROSPECTUS AND FACILITIES


ON
PAKISTAN RAILWAYS

Training of individuals of any organization, in view of changing economic conditions,
technology and nature of work, to learn new skills to develop new abilities and respond to
these changes, is an integral part of Human Resource Development, which, aims at to
improve the performance of the organization by maximizing the efficiency and performance
of its people; develop the knowledge and skills; actions and standards; motivation, incentives,
attitudes and working environment.

In line with these parameters of Human Resource Development, Pakistan Railways, fully
conscious of its obligations, also undertakes training as one of the most important activities,
in addition to other steps like provision of welfare facilities for the betterment of its
employees as motivation; and develop the knowledge and skills through various training
institutes and centers spread over the system.


Presently Pakistan Railways has following training facilities for the members of its staff and
officers belonging to various disciplines; and participants from the Railways of the Afro
Asian countries.

Apprentice Training Centre, Workshops Division, Lahore
Technical Training Centre, Karachi
Accounts Training Centre, Walton, Lahore
Railway Police Training School, Lahore
Corrective Training Schools, at various locomotive sheds

PAKISTAN RAILWAY ACADEMY, WALTON, LAHORE
Pakistan Railways Academy was established as a Training School for North Western Railway
(NWR)s employees at Lyalpur, now Faisalabad, in January 1925. This was shifted to present
site on 8
th
March 1929; and named Walton Training School after Col. C.E. Walton, the
then Agent (GM) of NWR, Lahore. In this Academy more than 150 Initial, Promotion and
Refresher training courses are arranged for the new and in service railway employees and
officers for Railway Service, mainly in the following disciplines.

Transportation (Traffic) and Commercial
Civil Engineering
Mechanical Engineering

Signal and Telecommunication Engineering
Electrical Engineering Branch
Stores Branch
Personnel Branch
Computer and Information Technology


The training is imparted in the academy, spread over 77 acres, with 35 class rooms, 10 model
rooms / labs, having the replica of the actual systems in vogue on Pakistan Railways and 2
computer labs, by the experienced instructors and senior railway officers as member of the
faculty. Training is also imparted through practical demonstration in the field, exposing the
trainees to the actual working; through in service and retired top slot managers of various
disciplines, as guest speakers. The facilities in the Academy also include an Auditorium, a
Library, 9 Hostels (for 400-500 participants), one Dispensary / Hospital and a number of
playgrounds.


PAKISTAN INTER-REGIONAL RAILWAY TRAINING COLLEGE (PIRRTC)

In 1954, the United Nations Regional Railway Training Centre was established by ECAFE
(now ESCAP) in the Pakistan Railways Academy; and an Advanced Railway Course was
introduced for the participants from the Railways of ESCAP, the Middle East and African
Region. In 1958, the Regional Railway Training Centre was taken over by Government of
Pakistan and renamed as Pakistan Inter- Regional Railway Training College (PIRRTC); and
GOP started funding this course. 108 such courses have been conducted till March 2010 by
this Institution, attended by about 1800 participants from more than 40 courtiers.


Other Courses at Pakistan Railways Academy

In addition to the above Management, Capacity Building and Specially Designed,
Customized Courses are also arranged for Senior Railway Officers and the Members of the
Staff as per requirements in the fields related to Railway services like Railway Marketing,
Orientation Courses for noncore disciplines like Medical Officers etc


APPRENTICE TRAINING CENTRE, LAHORE

This centre is commonly known as Mechanical Training Centre (MET) and provides
technical training to the labour, workmen and supervisors for Mechanical Workshops in
various trades for appointment as skilled artisans and technical supervisors. The centre is
fully equipped to meet with the increasing demands for training railway personnel and impart
training in all the basics mechanical engineering trades. The qualified faculty comprises of
B. Sc Engineering and Associate Engineering (DAE) of different trades provides training
primarily to the railway employees but for outside agencies as well. The campus is spread
over an area of 17 acres, has 8 class rooms for 400 students, library, model room, two
playgrounds for sports activities; and hostel facilities for accommodating 150 apprentices
with mess and kitchen facilities.

TECHNICAL TRAINING CENTRE PAKISTAN RAILWAYS, KARACHI

This Centre imparts technical training to the Locomotive Operating Staff i.e. Train Drivers,
Assistant Drivers and the Diesel Engine Maintenance Staff of Pakistan Railways in the
following areas.


Basic Diesel Trade Course Mechanical/Electrical
Elementary Mechanical Promotion Course from Helper to Semi Skilled Fitter
Higher Mechanical Promotion Course for fitters
Elementary Electrical Promotion Course from Helper to Semi Skilled Wireman
Higher Electrical Promotion Course for Wireman
Mechanical Training Course for Apprentice Assistant Drivers
Mechanical Electrical Training Course for Apprentice Assistant Drivers
Refresher Course (For Drivers, Dy. Drivers & Assistant Drivers


The Centre has six class rooms, a model room equipped with sectional view of all aspects of
locomotive of two stroke and four stroke diesel engine, air brake rigging system, main parts
of diesel engine such as crank shaft, cam shaft, cylinder liner and models of Chinese
Locomotives, recently inducted in Pakistan Railways for practical training; and a library.


PAKISTAN RAILWAY ACCOUNTS TRAINING CENTRE

Pakistan Railways Accounts Training Centre is providing raining to the newly appointed
employees of Railway Accounts Department prepares them for promotion examinations and
increase their skills and working abilities in their respective field. Experienced and competent
Accounts Officers and Senior Auditors are responsible for providing to the employees. Hostel
facilities with library and computer lab are also available in this centre.

PAKISTAN RAILWAYS POLICE TRAINING SCHOOL, LAHORE

Railway Police Training School is located in the premises of Pakistan Railways Academy
and is supervised by a Deputy Superintendent of Police. The school works under the overall
control of Inspector General of Railway Police and is responsible for providing Pre- Service

Training to the newly recruited police constables and promotion course for police constables
to become head constables.

Well groomed Police Instructors, fully conversant with the rules and regulation and the law
of the land, provide training at the Police School. The school with available infrastructure
other facilities has the capacity to train 150-200 police officials at one point of time.


The training of the Pakistan Railways employees and officers is a subject which is the focal
point of attention for this organization which go on taking steps to improve it further. Studies
are also under taken in the area of Human Resource Development and Training to improve
these further.

Best and the experienced Instructors and Officers are posted in these Training Institutes
as member of the faculty.

Adding new equipment, in line with the progress made on Pakistan Railways, is an
ongoing process, as has been done at Technical Training Centre, Karachi. Similar new
instruments for training purposes are continuously added in other institutes as well.

Latest audio visual techniques are used for imparting instructions to the participants.

Customized Courses, on demand are also being conducted at the Pakistan Railway
Academy, as and when required by Pakistan Railways or even by foreign railways.

Pakistan Railway Advisory and Consultancy Services (PRACS) a subsidiary organization
of Pakistan Railways in collaboration with latter has sufficiently equipped itself to
undertake projects like rehabilitation and establishment of Railway Training Centers of
the fast recovering and new railways in the South Asia, Middle East and African Region.

PRACS is also looking forward to organize and arrange Customized Training Courses in
the Training Institutes of Pakistan Railways for the rapidly growing and rehabilitating
Foreign Railways.
