AIM

To provide analytical solutions to stress resultants in indeterminate structures.
LEARNING OUTCOMES


Learners should be able to:
Predict elastic and plastic deformation in indeterminate structures,
Analyze buckling of struts,
Analyze statically indeterminate beams,
Estimate the torsional capacity of non-circular cross sections

COURSE CONTENTS

Theory
1. Introduction to statically indeterminate structures

2. Theory of Elasticity and plasticity
Generalized Hooks law, Three dimensional problems in elasticity, Plane
stress and strain problems, Airy stress function and its applications.
Plastic bending of beams, plastic hinge analysis,

3. Buckling of Struts
Eular theory of buckling for slender columns, End conditions, Buckling
characteristics for real struts, Eccentric loading of slender columns, Struts
having initial curves.

4. Analytical Methods of solutions
Limits theorem, Virtual work approach, Macaulays method, Three moment
equation

5. Torsion
Torsion of thin walled cylinder, Torsion of a solid circular shaft, Torsional
equation, Torsion of a hollow circular shaft, Torsion of non- circular sections,
Torsion of thin walled sections, Plastic torsion of shafts



6. Thin plates and shells
Thin shells under pressure, thin plates, Plate subjected to uniform pressure,
Plate with central circular hole.
