Mr. Poroto, My Favorite Cat
by Patricia Dominguez
Read other essays by Patricia Dominguez
I have had a lot of cats during my life, but only one was different. Maybe it is because I
am older and don't remember very well the other ones (except Duquesa, a lady cat I had
when I was eight years old.)
Dr. Poroto arrived at my Grandma's house a few days before my grandfather died. Two
or three months before that, he lived with the Quiroga family, who are my grandma's
neighbors. However, as my grandma gave him fresh food and milk every morning and a
lot of love in her words when she touched him, he decided to move to the new house. He
decided to change owners. At this time, almost two years ago, he was only one year old.
It seems incredible, but he has been growing a lot each month.
When my grandfather passed away, Dr. Poroto was good company for my grandma.
Every afternoon, he took a rest in the sunshine in the big window in the living room. My
grandma would be near to him while she drank mat (a traditional herbal hot drink in
Argentina).
If we are going to investigate Dr. Poroto's life, we will find a lot of funny things that will
make us laugh. He loves to sleep in different place in my grandma's house; for example,
he sleeps in the bathroom, in the kitchen, or inside some boxes that my grandma has.
He also likes to inspect everything. He is very intelligent and recognizes people. He also
likes to play all the time, especially with the things that he finds on the floor or on the
table.
He is very cute, of course. He has long hair, which is white and brown, with black
stripes, too. His eyes are a mix between green and yellow, and they are very big. He has
very long whiskers; when he drinks milk, they are white.
He hates only one thing: water. He doesn't like his baths given by my grandma. Whe his
bath is finished, he shakes his body and begins to lick himself. He is very soft. He is also
a very good hunter of birds. I don't like this, but it stays deep inside him. I understand
him, because I love him.
Dr. Poroto loves to give and receive a lot of petting. I miss him a lot, because I love
cats, and he is mine. He is the most important cat in the world for me.

A Person I Admire
by Patricia Dominguez
Read other essays by Patricia Dominguez
I admire some people. The first one is my mother; she is the big hero in my life. The
second is my grandma. She has the perfect words that I need for my progress. However,
I admire a lot another person who does not belong to my family. She is Dr. Maria Luisa
Ageitos. She is an eminent pediatrician in Argentina.
Dr. Ageitos was the first woman until this moment who has been president of the
Argentinean Pediatrics Society. She belongs to UNICEF Argentina, and she works very
much for this topic: "For a healthy child in a better world." Her specialization is to teach
other doctors about all the techniques for breastfeeding administration. She loves her
job. She has been a neonatologist since 1965, almost when I was only one year old.
I have learned so much from her. She and her husband, who died three years ago, are
and were very humble persons. She is a pioneer of natural care for newborn babies. Her
words were and are in favor of the rights of the child, how to teach the future parents,
how to care for the babies inside their mothers, and how to create a special bond with
this newborn baby.
She made it possible for Dr. Marshall Klauss to be in Buenos Aires, Argentina for two
important Congresses of Pediatricians, because he is her teacher by books. This old
doctor was a pioneer in investigating about the different bonds, but especially one when
the mother sees for the first time her son, and he sees her. Also, he advocates the
importance of the family being together, speaking and listening to each other. This is
healthy, both for the body and for the soul.
When I was studying, I hoped to be a little like Dr. Ageitos. At last, when I graduated, I
looked for a job similar to hers, such as working for UNICEF (ad honorem, of course),
teaching other professionals and future parents, and belonging to the Argentinean
Pediatrics Society. Finally, my dream became a reality! I worked with her.
Before I came to the United States, I saw her in a meeting, and she told me that English
will be very important for my specialization. When I understand English very well, I can
read and study Doctor Appelbaums book. This is an older book, but its interesting. I
will.
Maria Luisa Ageitos is a good mother, too. She is friendly, and there are a lot of people
around her. I think that they admire her. Her secretary is her daughter Marina. When Dr.
Ageitos wins a prize, her daughter shouts, "Bravo, Mom!"

My Son
by Guo Ying Gao

I have a cute baby. He is my son. He was born on December 3, 1997. Right now he is
two years and ten month. He has a beautiful name Haoyu Dong. My son is a smart boy.
My husband and I love him very much. My husband is always proud of my son.
The second day after my son was born, he could hear my husband's voice. When my
husband talked to him, he would open his eyes. When he was three months, he could
move his legs and arms to music; some people don't believe that. My husband and I
spoke Chinese at home, but my son could understand English, because he watched TV
everyday. When he was one year and five months, one American man came to my home
and spoke with my husband; when they just finished speaking my son said, "bye" to that
man. Everyone laughed at my son, and my husband said, "How did you know we were
finished?" The man said, " You are so luck. You have a smart baby."
Last August, we went back to China. We visited a Chinese martial arts school; my son
waved his hand at every student and shook their hands and talked to them. Everybody
said, "He is cute." I sent my son to my mother's home last September. I came back to
America last December. In January, I came to BYU English Language Center to study
English. I missed my son very much; I called him every week.
This August, my husband took my son back to New York, and I came back to New York
with my son for twenty more days. I had very happy time with my son, but my husband
just stayed in New York one week. He was very busy; he took one American dancing
group to China for a dance tour. One day my son talked to me, and he said, "Father
doesn't likes me; he doesn't need me." I felt very sorry for my son; he was just two
years and eight months, and I know we hurt his feelings, but I have to go study and my
husband has to work. When I left him, he cried a lot, and he wanted to go with me, but I
couldn't take him. My son loves the airplane a lot; every time an airplane flies over, he
raises his head and says, "Airplane, airplane, I love airplane!" Right now when an
airplane flies over, he says, "Airplane! Mother is on the airplane!" He misses me a lot
and I miss him too.
Right now, I just wish I could study fast. I want finish the semester quickly, so I can go
back to New York and be with my son and my husband. I have a wonderful family, and I
have a wonderful son.

I have raised my dog since when I was young. My dog is not for eating. It consoles me
mentally. Whenever my dog welcomes me, I feel my stress disappearing. My dog always
gives a joyous welcome. When I return to my house, my dog kisses me and expresses
his pleasure by shaking his tail. My dog is very cute.
My dog is my only friend who I can talk to in a frank manner. Sometimes, I have an
argument with my friend, and it makes me feel distressed all day long. I talk to my dog
about my problems without losing my senses and then I feel better. I tell my dog about
my secrets. I think that some people like to tell their secrets to anyone. I also have a
mind to tell my secrets to my dog. He listens to my secrets in silence. I don't need to
about him leaking my secrets. I get composure from him. He might be the best
counselor for me.
In Korea, we have eaten dog for a long time, so we are loudly censured in the world, but
it is good for the health, and thats the reason we have eaten it. If you dont understand
how we can eat it, then Koreans dont understand how other people can eat snails, cows,
or pigs. We have disputed if we should eat dog. Some people think we shouldnt eat dog
for any reason, but other people think we should be able to eat dog freely. In my
opinion, its good for the health. I can understand eating dog a little, if we eat it for
health. However, a dog gives comfort to us and our friends, so I hope we wont eat dog
someday. I love dogs.

I admire my mother. She always gave me everything that she could give me. When I
was young, I used to go out to play with my friends. Like most children, I also liked to
do that. However, because the winter in Korea is cold, I was not supposed to play
outside for a long time.
One day I was playing with my friends. I felt that my body became frozen because the
day was also very cold. Thus I couldnt help going back home. At that time my mother
was sleeping under the bedclothes which were laid right on the floor in the house. The
Korean heating system is different from the American one. In Korea, it makes a room
warm through heating the floor of the room, so we feel warm under the bedclothes. Thus
I came under my mothers bedclothes. Then my mother touched my feet with her feet.
She made an effort to make my feet warm.
I could remember that it was unpleasant when my brother entered my bedclothes with
cold hands and feet suddenly while I was sleeping. However, my mother was willing to
warm me up. Ill never forget that moment. I know that my mother loves me.

President Winwood
by Yumi Ogawa

I would like to tell about my special friend. His name is Mr.Winwood. Actually, he is a
mission president on Temple Square, and we call him "President Winwood". He is like our
father. He is always thinking of us. He loves us so much.
Before his mission, President Winwood had a lot of business. He had an airplane
company. Its name was WINN-AIR. His office has a picture of an airplane. It was a
beautiful airplane. I wondered how it was possible that we could meet each other. He
and I are in different positions in life.
President Winwood is a skinny man. He speaks very fast. He can understand people's
feelings very well. I think he has seen a lot of success in his life, and he has a good
personality. I can tell that he is very smart, too. He has a nice smile for everybody. He is
a gentleman. His cologne reminds me of a "fatherly" smell. I had never seen this kind of
great gentleman before in my life.
Why is he a special friend for me? Because he became my sponsor for school. One day,
we had a meeting. He asked me about my plans for after my mission. At that time, I told
him my desire. I really wanted to come back to the USA for my studies, but I knew that
my family wouldn't like it. My parents wanted me to stay at home in order to support my
family. I didn't want to go back to Japan. When I was little, I got a lot of abuse from my
parents. I was so scared of them. I wanted to have a peace in my life, and I decided to
come back to Utah. I didn't have an idea for how I could come back. President Winwood
told me, "You can come back here. You don't need to worry about money. I will pay for
you, and you can feel peace."
I was surprised by this. I said to him, "It's impossible! How can you do that? It costs a
lot of money." He said to me, "If you need more money, I will sell my car. If you need
more, I will sell my watch. I will give you everything." I couldn't say anything. I just
gave him a hug. I cried a lot because I couldn't believe what a great blessing this was! I
felt God's love through him. I understood that my desire and Heavenly Father's desire
were the same. I felt that I would be able to come back to America.
I thought that President Winwood was a great man! I appreciate his big heart. He looks
like Jesus Christ. I want to try my best, and when I become a famous film director, I
also want to become somebody's sponsor. It is a way to pay back my special friend. I
am thankful to my God that I could meet him.
Yesterday, I and my friends were studying at Denny's. One of the waiters came to us,
and he asked us, "Are you guys BYU students?" We said, "Yes, we are BYU ELC
students." He said, "Oh! Are you studying for a test?" We said, "Yes." I asked him, "Did
you graduate from BYU?" He said, "No, I couldn't go to BYU. I didn't have any money for
school." At this moment, I started thinking about myself. I am a very lucky girl, because
he couldn't have a sponsor for his education, but I was able to with the help of President
Winwood.
Life is a mystery. Everyone can't see their own future, but this life is fun. I appreciate
Heavenly Father's plan. He sent me here. I will do my best. Someday, I want my family
to understand why I came over here. I want to tell them how to show love to each other.
I know that it is very difficult for me, but I believe that I can do it.

He said, "No!!" I asked him, "Why don't you like it? I think his car is a good car." He

Let me describe my best friend. His name is John. I met him 7 years ago for the first
time. I found out about him from a flyer posted in the street. Are you anxious about
him?
First of all, he looks like white cake. His hair is white like fresh cream. His eyes are like
two black pearls. His nose is always moistened like dewy flowers. His ears are as big as
the rest of his face. Whenever he runs, his hair is glossy and his ears flutter.
I always embrace him. At that time, I have a sensation of going behind the clouds. In
addition, his smell is sweet like candy, except when he doesn't take a bath for a long
time. However, I always like him anyway.
Each time I say, "Let's eat," he runs along panting. As a result, he strains his ears, and
he lolls out his tongue. Maybe, the glitter of his eyes is the most pure thing in the world.
However, if he makes a mistake, he runs under the sofa and stays as stiff as ice. Then,
he hangs his head. In addition, he steps out from under the sofa while his eyes swim
with tears. Also, he lies down to show his belly. I must forgive his mistake.
Maybe you can guess. He is my dog! He is living in my hometown. As a result, I miss
him now. He teaches me about how to love animals. In addition, he makes friends with
me when I am lonely. I love him so much. As a result, I want to live with him forever.

opportunity to study here in the United States. She wants good things for her family and
it is good for me. I want to be like her with many goals in my life. We are far away, but
