This study aimed to identify risk factors for delayed diagnosis of scabies in hospitalized patients from long-term care facilities. The study reviewed 700 cases of scabies in 370 patients hospitalized from long-term care facilities between 2008-2010. 88 cases were considered delayed diagnoses. Patients with delayed diagnoses were more likely to have a history of chronic steroid use and longer hospital stays. Logistic regression found chronic steroid therapy to be a significant risk factor for delayed scabies diagnosis. The study concludes physicians should monitor long-term care patients on chronic steroids more closely to avoid delayed scabies diagnosis.
