taking shape these days among the various faith communities
in Lawrence. It is exciting and unique in that it unites us to-
gether in a common mission to the broader Lawrence com-
munity. It has to do with the formation of a Lawrence Jus-
tice Ministry.

A "Justice Ministry" here at First Baptist and in Lawrence
will complement the many "Mercy Ministries" that our con-
gregations provide such as feeding the hungry, providing
shelter to those without a home, caring for those falling
through the safety net, enabling health care for those without
access. Mercy Ministries provide direct aid to those who
are suffering; in contrast, Justice Ministry seeks to address
the root causes of that which makes our Mercy Ministries
necessary.

During October the Lawrence Justice Ministry will be spon-
soring 150 small group meetings in and around Lawrence.
In these meetings, individuals will be invited to share, listen,
and discuss their concerns about our community. What are
the primary obstacles to opportunity and advancement that
individuals in Lawrence face? What are the things that keep
people mired in cycles of poverty and debt, unable to dig
out? What prevents children from taking full advantage of
educational opportunities? How can we make our city a
place of equal opportunity, neighborly love, mutual respect,
and communal charity?

Eight persons from First Baptist have committed to hosting
a small group meeting. You will be contacted by one of
these persons and invited to their home for a time of serious
discussion with 10-15 of your fellow FBCers. Please take
advantage of this opportunity to express your concerns, as
well as your hopes for a just Lawrence. ~Steve Yoder

New Group has a New Name!
C C C C
(C-Squared!)
A new group at FBC has started getting together once
a month for fellowship and a meal. The group is a
"college and career"-aged group (young adults) and
there have been fifteen people involved so far this se-
mester! At our last meal, we decided to name our-
selves "C squared". Many of us are students, and most
are working on advanced degrees. Our next fellowship
meal will be November 9 after worship; it will be a
potato bar!
Thanks to everyone who brought food and helped set
up for our last fellowship meal. If you have questions,
or are interested in being a part of this group, call
Cheryl at 316-680-3533.
