Match Report; Gill stands tall as Marlins get their re-match ---------------------------------------------------------------- Canberra,ACT- For nearly two years now the noise was getting louder as critics of Patrick Gill suggested his play was not matching his hype. That all ended Sunday when Gill carried the Marlins on his shoulders to win the Grand Final Qualifier 17-9 over the Canberra kookaburras.
The game was tight and at times this seemed to be playing into the hands of the home side. JP Gutherson was held to 36 yards on the ground, his lowest total all year. In the past this would have trouble Townsville but not today, not on this field. Gill was magnificent. After a Donnie Fletcher interception, Gill went for the jugular and hit Gutherson 70 yards down the right hand side for the first touchdown. Then in the waning moments of the final quarter, under pressure for a Canberra team that would not go away, Gill took control and hit 7 of 9 passes to again find Gutherson in the flat to win the game 17-9.
Canberras defence was magnificent. They rallied to the ball and out played the Marlins in the physical stakes. Sebastian Hogan was back to his best pass rushing even though he was still playing inside at tackle. He finished with 3 sacks on the day.
But Ryan Picker was not his normal self. Having not thrown an interception since taking over the starting job in week 17, Picker threw 2 today. He was only a game day decision to play still suffering from an elbow injury that sidelined him the week before. It is easy in hindsight to make decisions. I think we would have still gone with him. It was all or nothing today said Coach Nathan Richards whose decision making magic finally wore off.
It was not just about the turnovers for Canberra either. They simply could not punch the ball into the end zone against Townsville. Whose Red Zone defence was stout.
Monikura Joe put the kookaburras into the lead late in the 1 st with a 30 yard field goal before Gill struck his 70 yard blow to Gutherson. It became 7-6 midway through the third with another Joe field goal before Gutherson crossed for his second with just under 4 minutes to play. Both teams traded late field goals, Canberra coming with just 113 seconds left. The desperation onside kick failed and the marlins celebrated the 17-9 win.
