Medical Tourism

What's called medical tourism patients going to a different country

for either urgent or elective medical procedures is fast becoming a
worldwide, multibillion-dollar industry.

The reasons patients travel for treatment vary. Many medical tourists
from the United States are seeking treatment at a quarter or sometimes
even a 10th of the cost at home. From Canada, it is often people who are
frustrated by long waiting times. From Great Britain, the patient can't
wait for treatment by the National Health Service but also can't afford to
see a physician in private practice. For others, becoming a medical
tourist is a chance to combine a tropical vacation with elective or plastic
surgery.

And more patients are coming from poorer countries such as Bangladesh
where treatment may not be available.

Medical tourism is actually thousands of years old. In ancient Greece,

pilgrims and patients came from all over the Mediterranean to the
sanctuary of the healing god, Asklepios, at Epidaurus. In Roman Britain,
patients took the waters at a shrine at Bath, a practice that continued for
2,000 years. From the 18th century wealthy Europeans travelled to spas
from Germany to the Nile. In the 21st century, relatively low-cost jet
travel has taken the industry beyond the wealthy and desperate.

Countries that actively promote medical tourism include Cuba, Costa

Rica, Hungary, India, Israel, Jordan, Lithuania, Malaysia and Thailand.
Belgium, Poland and Singapore are now entering the field. South Africa
specializes in medical safaris-visit the country for a safari, with a
stopover for plastic surgery, a nose job and a chance to see lions and
elephants.
India
India is considered the leading country promoting medical tourism-and
now it is moving into a new area of "medical outsourcing," where
subcontractors provide services to the overburdened medical care
systems in western countries.

India's National Health Policy declares that treatment of foreign patients

is legally an "export" and deemed "eligible for all fiscal incentives
extended to export earnings." Government and private sector studies in
India estimate that medical tourism could bring between $1 billion and
$2 billion US into the country by 2012. The reports estimate that
medical tourism to India is growing by 30 per cent a year.

India's top-rated education system is not only churning out computer

programmers and engineers, but an estimated 20,000 to 30,000 doctors
and nurses each year.

The largest of the estimated half-dozen medical corporations in India

serving medical tourists is Apollo Hospital Enterprises, which treated an
estimated 60,000 patients between 2001 and spring 2004. It is Apollo
that is aggressively moving into medical outsourcing. Apollo already
provides overnight computer services for U.S. insurance companies and
hospitals as well as working with big pharmaceutical corporations with
drug trials. Dr. Prathap C. Reddy, the chairman of the company, began
negotiations in the spring of 2004 with Britain's National Health Service
to work as a subcontractor, to do operations and medical tests for
patients at a fraction of the cost in Britain for either government or
private care.
Apollo's business began to grow in the 1990s, with the deregulation of
the Indian economy, which drastically cut the bureaucratic barriers to
expansion and made it easier to import the most modern medical
equipment. The first patients were Indian expatriates who returned home
for treatment; major investment houses followed with money and then
patients from Europe, the Middle East and Canada began to arrive.
Apollo now has 37 hospitals, with about 7,000 beds. The company is in
partnership in hospitals in Kuwait, Sri Lanka and Nigeria.

Western patients usually get a package deal that includes flights,

transfers, hotels, treatment and often a post-operative vacation.

Apollo has also reacted to criticism by Indian politicians by expanding

its services to India's millions of poor. It has set aside free beds for those
who can't afford care, has set up a trust fund and is pioneering remote,
satellite-linked telemedicine across India.
Medical Tourism

• B. M. Birla Heart Research Centre in Calcutta, India, is a super

specialty hospital dedicated exclusively to the diagnosis, treatment
and research related to cardio-vascular diseases. It has established
itself as India's most advanced heart centre. In addition to Indians,
it has treated patients from Bangladesh, Bhutan, Nepal, Mauritius,
Hongkong, Kenya and other neighboring countries. The centre has
a special interest in the advanced field of cardiac surgery,
especially reconstructive operations on infants.

• India is hoping to expand its tourist industry – to include visitors
with heart conditions and cataracts. Indeed, medical tourism,
where foreigners travel abroad in search of low cost, world-class
medical treatment, is gaining popularity in countries like India.
The field has such lucrative potential that Indian finance minister
Jaswant Singh called for India to become a “global health
destination.” And, with prices at a fraction of those in the US or
Britain, the concept will likely have broad consumer appeal – if
people can overcome their prejudices about health care in
developing countries. Though the quality of health care for the
poor in countries like India is undeniably low, private facilities
offer advanced technology and procedures on par with hospitals in
developed nations. One Indian hospital director maintains, "In a
corporate hospital, once the door is closed you could be in a
hospital in America.” – Yale Global

Our History

It was in 1976 when addressing a group of doctors, His Holiness Sri

Jayendra Saraswathi, the Sankaracharya of the Kanchi Kamakoti
Peetam spoke of the need to create a hospital with a missionary spirit.
His words marked the beginning of a long journey to do God's own
work.

On the command of His Holiness, Dr. Sengamedu Srinivasa

Badrinath, along with a group of philanthropists founded a charitable
not-for-profit eye hospital...

One that would bring world-class eye care to the people of India. One
that would adopt a single standard of care for all, rich or poor. One
that would share the fruits of its knowledge and spread its concept of
care to distant parts of this country.

In a solemn function held at the premises of the Vijaya Hospital with

Semmangudi Srinivasa Aiyer offering the prayer, Mrs (Dr) T Agarwal
inaugurated the project.
On the auspicious day of Vinayaka Chaturthi, the sixth day of
September in the year 1978, the hospital came into existence.
It was named Sankara Nethralaya, which means "The Temple of the
Eye". The long journey for vision with a mission began.

In 28 years, the hospital has gained international excellence and is

acclaimed for its quality care and compassion. Sankara Nethralaya
today has grown into a super specialty institution for ophthalmic care
and receives patients from all over the country and from abroad.
Sankara Nethralaya family today has over 1000 individuals with one
vision – to propagate the Nethralaya philosophy; the place of our work
is an Alaya and Work will be our worship, which we shall do with
sincerity, dedication and utmost love with a missionary spirit.

Sankara Nethralaya has been described by Shri Nani A. Palkivala, an

eminent legal expert and former Indian Ambassador to USA, as the
"Best Managed Charitable Organization in India". Sir Ratan Tata
Trust has observed Sankara Nethralaya as a High Performing
Knowledge Institution – mission driven, a proven track record,
acknowledged nationally and internationally for its expertise and
excellence in Ophthlmic care with almost all eye sub-specialities,
good management systems, a vibrant set of human resources and a
participative system of decision-making.
On an average, 1200 patients walk through our doors and 100
surgeries are performed every day. In our journey for excellence, we
have received many awards and appreciation of our efforts.

Chennai- Culture

Chennai, popularly regarded as the Gateway to the South, is the capital

city of Tamil Nadu. It is the fourth largest metropolis in India, located on
a 17 km stretch of the Coromandel Coast. The city grew up around the
English settlement of Fort St. George and gradually absorbed the
surrounding towns and villages. However, despite the strong British
influence, Chennai has retained its traditional Tamil heritage and
effectively blended it to create a unique synthesis of cultures.

Retaining much of its traditional charm, this 350-year-old city provides

many a fascinating vignette of southern heritage. It is a city where the
landscape of the past lives easily with recent history. In Chennai, you
would find a modern metropolis with a clear skyline, long sandy
beaches, parks and historic landmarks. With a population of 6 million
people, Chennai is a vibrant city ever growing, expanding and changing
every year.

Chennai presents culture distinct from

that of northern India. Music, dance and
all other art forms of the South are
cherished and nurtured in this city.
Chennai is a city where the traditional
and the modern blend in life everywhere.
From traditional vegetarian fare to fast
food, from nine-yard saris to the latest in fashion, from ancient temple
architecture to modern high-rises, from classical music and dance to
discos throbbing to heady beats, Chennai has them all and many more
vivid contrasts that are a pleasant surprise.

Chennai offers a wealth of nature and a rich historic past to visitors in

the ambience of a city with every modern facility.

Chennai is also the center of South India's film industry. Its skyline is
dotted with bright movie billboards advertising the latest celluloid
fantasies. It has become a significant form of popular art with their
gaudy colors and garish layouts. The larger than life cutouts of popular
matinee idols superimposed on the hoardings give them a three-
dimensional effect. The more the cutouts, the higher the popularity of
the film stars. There are many big film
studios churning out movies every
month. It is the land where film stars are
revered as the demi-gods of society.

Cine-stars turned politicians are the order

of the day now in this city .The late M. G.
Ramachandran, the more-than-once chief
minister of Tamil Nadu, was a movie star
with a dedicated fan following. He seemed to have started a trend of
sorts, for the current C.M is also a former successful film star.

Here traditional art forms like dance and music are a way of life even in
the most modern homes. Training in classical Carnatic music - vocal and
instrumental, and the exposition of the Bharatnatyam dance form are
pursued with zeal. In fact, the first public performance of a
Bharatnatyam artiste, known as the Arangetram or debut, is celebrated
on the lines of a family function.

Tamilnadu Weather

The geographical location of Tamil

Nadu is such that the climatic condition
shows only slight seasonal variations.
Due to close proximity to the Sea, the
temperatures and humidity remain
relatively high all the year round. The
climate of Tamil Nadu is tropical in
nature with little variation in summer and winter temperatures. While
April-June is the hottest summer period (with the temperature rising up
to the 40ºC mark), November-February is the coolest winter period (with
temperatures hovering around 20ºC), making the climate quite pleasant.

It is interesting to note that Tamil Nadu gets most of its rains from the
North-east Monsoons between October and December while the state
remains largely dry during the South West Monsoon season. The
average annual rainfall in Tamil Nadu ranges between 25 and 75 inches
a year. During summers (April to June), the coastal areas of Tamil Nadu
become awkwardly warm and humid, but the nights become cool and
pleasant due to sea breeze in the afternoon. During the hot season, the
charming hill stations of Tamil Nadu provide much needed respite from
heat and humidity. The period between October to March (when the
climate becomes pleasantly cool) is the ideal time to visit Tamil Nadu.
