Summary Objectives and Outcomes



HSIE Understanding Ourselves - Celebrations - understanding how cultural diversity
influences our beliefs, values and connection to place and people. This can be expressed
through objects, songs, dances and stories.
Students will use digital technology to show their creativity, knowledge and understanding of
the unit being studied in class.

English K-10
EN1-1A communicates with a range of people in informal and guided activities
demonstrating interaction skills and considers how own communication is adjusted in
different situations
EN1-2A plans, composes and reviews a small range of simple texts for a variety of
purposes on familiar topics for known readers and viewers

ST1-5WT uses a structured design process, everyday tools, materials, equipment and
techniques to produce solutions that respond to identified needs and wants
ST1-15I describes a range of familiar information sources and technologies and how their
purposes influence their design.




Unit overview


In this unit, students will use Kidpix to create symbols that represent a celebration. They will
learn how computer programs, tools and websites can be used to create digital forms of
writing and visual representations. Students will look at the process and tools that can be
used to manipulate images and text to make them visually stimulating in more than one
digital form a kidpix visual mind map page and a slideshow with a narration podcast.

Logging on and off the network

Students will practice the skill of logging onto the
Mac network with their log on cards. Students are
expected to learn to type their first and last name
independently without any need for a log on card
or support. Each log on is unique. Some students
surname is followed by a number. All students
need to be able to locate the full stop to separate
their first and last name.


Managing/Operating Inquiry>>>
Logging on and off

Logs onto the Mac network by:
Using the keyboard to press letters to type their
username correctly to log onto the network.
Clicks on password field.
Types password correctly and enters network by
either clicking on the house or the arrow icon.

Logs off the Mac network by:
Clicking the apple icon on the menu bar.
uses the drop down menu to select the last
command log off(name).
Understands the dialogue box(read by teacher) to
complete log off procedure by clicking yes or no.

Kidpix Visual Mindmap and Slideshow
Students will be able to select from the following:
Birthdays, Christmas, Australia Day, New Years Eve, Mothers Day,
Wedding Day, Chinese New Year, Fathers Day, Christening, Halloween,
Easter, Melbourne Cup, Clean Up Australia Day, ANZAC day, Olympic
Games etc
Each week the children will create a new Kidpix page for their
celebration slideshow. They will use a variety of tools or add
graphics to create pages that answers the following what
celebration? When? Why? Who?( A visual mindmap) They
will use words, images and podcasts to add meaning to their
pages. On the final page students will describe why the
event is important to them or others. Responses may include
family celebration, party, presents. Answer in a podcast
response.
- why is this event important to you or others? Why do you
value it?
- how do you feel when this celebration takes place? Why?
- why do you think your family values this event?
- what does it mean for your family to celebrate together?
Students will save each page into a document folder. Once this
is achieved students will create a slideshow with graphics,
transitions and sound. Children open program KidPix. Click on
slide show icon. Click on first frame and then the manila folder
to add pictures in boxes. Pictures are located in their document
folder and have been saved by the students as a series of
pages. Children import picture one at a time. Then click
transitions. Choose transitions and sound effects for each slide.
View slideshow. Save Slideshow as save a celebration.
Slideshows will be exported as a .mov file so that they can be
uploaded to the school technology blog for viewing and
commenting.

Select KidPix from the doc to open program.
Import pictures from documents.
Select slideshow tool and import saved pictures into
each frame.
Select transitions and sound effects to each frame.
Preview each frame.
Play slideshow and save new slideshow in my
documents as a .mov file.
