Shore Solutions, located at 986 Palm Avenue in Imperial Beach was started on the
principle that the customer is a companys most important asset. In todays impersonal
world of large business, customer service has suffered. Companies place profits over
service, and price over quality. At Shore Solutions we believe that its possible to provide
quality products at affordable prices, without sacrificing customer service. Were big
enough to serve, and small enough to care.
We do this by harnessing a large network of partners and suppliers as well as our
decades of logistical experience to source the finest products at the best prices under
the most demanding of requirements. In todays world of limited personnel resources
and constrained budgets, we understand the importance of getting the right products

Just to set the record straight: Yes, I agreed to a Mayoral
candidates only forum requested by my opponent on Sep-
tember 30th. I agreed by stating that this forum was to be
hosted by a non-partisan group. October 23 was the date
my opponent suggested. His last correspondence to me was
on October 1st stating that he was going check and get back
to me. He never did. My opponent now announces on line
that he has a debate set for October 27 without inviting me.
When a New York Union is spending upwards of $ 60,000
to buy the Mayor and City Council of Imperial Beach, you
have to ask WHY?? What do they want with our sleepy little
beach town? I will not participate in any way in a dog and
pony show hosted by yet another Union endorsing candi-
dates in Imperial Beach.
I will be at the forum hosted by the League of Women
Voters along the Imperial Beach Chamber of Commerce.
See you there.

Its always good to be prepared for emergencies, and along with the

DRACULA UNTOLD
Coming to theatres in the Halloween month from director Gary Shore and Universal
Pictures comes a story you dont know with DRACULA UNTOLD.
This film tells the tale of Vlad Tepes (Luke Evans); it is the turn of the century and
a peaceful time for his kingdom. Once having been a slave-child warrior for the
Turks, he earned the nickname Vlad the Impaler. Not wanting that life anymore
Vlad returns to his wife Mirena (Sarah Gadon) and son Ingeras (Art Parkinson).
Celebrating their twenty year peace, it is interrupted by the return of Mehmed
(Dominic Cooper) who not only comes for tribute but for 1,000 boys to become,
once again, slave-child warriors for the Turkish army. Vlad tries to reason with
childhood friend Mehmed but fails.
His only choice is to discover what creature lives in the mountain. Vlad comes face
to face with a master Vampire (Charles Dance) who gives him the opportunity to
know the strength and power of being a vampire. As with all deals with monsters,
it comes with a price.
It is a price Vlad must weight for his family and a kingdom he has sworn to protect!
FINAL WORD: Evans as Vlad does a tremendous job as the warrior turned peaceful
leader of a kingdom. We want to portray this character in a different light, we want
to shake things up and what better place to start than from the beginning, says
Evans of his character. He gives believability to this man Vlad trying to fight the
monster that he can become.
Gadon as wife Mirena is lovely and it is clear she will do anything to keep her child
from the Turks. When she realizes Vlad has made a sacrifice like no other she
stands by him. That doesnt stop Mehmed from coming to take what he thinks hes
entitled to. Cooper as Mehmed has an Alexander or Napoleon complex believing
that he can take without consequence. Oh most crazy rulers think the same.
Dance as the master Vampire is absolutely delicious to watch. The first time I saw
this actor was as Sardo Numspa in THE GOLDEN CHILD. I knew then that he
would be an actor that would stand out for me. Plus, without him how could my
family constantly say, My dear brother Numsey! Yea, we love that stuff. Then, in
2011 he would capture us once again as Tywin Lannister and be thrilled once again.
So it should be no shock that in DRACULA UNTOLD, he gets a chance to be evil
once again!
Other cast include: Diamaid Murtaugh as Dimitru, Paul Kaye as Brother Lucian,
William Houstan as Cazan, Noah Huntley as Captain Petru, Ronan Vibert as Simion,
Zach McGowan as Shkelgim, Ferdinand Kingsley as Hamza Bey, Joseph Long as
General Omer, Thor Kristjansson as Bright Eyes and Jakub Gierszal as Acemi.
TUBS OF POPCORN: I give DRACULA UNTOLD four tubs of popcorn out of
five. I will admit that there was a fleeting thought that this could go horribly wrong
but from beginning to end I enjoyed it. There is a brief history and then straight to
a story of the man turned creature but the bad guy image is clearly given to the
master Vampire. The story also leaves the door open for letting the games begin.
Id definitely be ready to see where the story goes.
Jenise says of the film, It is definitely a four out of five tubs for me. The story was
actually quite original in the way it was told. Told from a different perspective I
really enjoyed it. Evans gets into the role and gives is some very cool angles. I
honestly couldnt find a single thing I didnt like about the film.
The cinematography is very well done and the IMAX only makes the images sharper
and the sound is amazing. From the battles to the changing of Vlad, the film isnt
over done and the cgi actually compliments the story rather than take over the story.
So if you are ready for the thrills and scares to begin the Halloween season, then get
the gang together and hit the theatres for DRACULA UNTOLD!
In the end every bloodline has a beginning!
Blues & BBQ Festival - (Contd from front pg)
Fall Festival is one of Boys & Girls Clubs of South Countys most anticipated events.
Each year, the sites operated by BGCSC put on a community carnival. Each site is
responsible for creating a themed booth with activities for the community to engage
in. Last year, our Extended Learning Site Nicoloff won the award for best all around
with their Cirque d Nic booth. The sites get really into it and they are really competi-
tive, last years booths were: Minecraft, Wizard of Oz, Vampire Fright Night, Zom-
bie Attack, Super Mario World, Mad Science Lab, Mardi Gras, Groovy 60s, Mexi-
can Fiesta, Halloween Village, and a Haunted Zombie Trail. Ive heard that Nicoloff
has been working on their booth since June. Like most of our events, admission is
free and we sell tickets for use at booths, and we sell concessions throughout the day.
Our Fall Festival is Saturday, October 25th from 2 to 6pm. See you there!
BOYS & GIRLS CLUB FALL FESTIVAL IS HERE!
The Imperial Beach Chamber of Commerce held its BBQ and Blues Festival at the
Portwood Plaza in Imperial Beach. Featuring some of San Diegos Award winning bands,
pulled pork plates, a Beer Garden featuring the Coronado Brewing Company beer, ven-
dors and childrens activities. It promised to give fun for the entire family. The day
started with Robert Edmunds Band followed by Lenny Fuzzy Rankins and The
Little Kings Blues That Swing finishing out with The Earthmovers, featuring Lady
J. Everyone was on their feet moving and grooving. With all of the amazing bands,
beer garden, vendors and kids activities, the Imperial Beach Chamber of Commerce did
not let down! It was a truly special way to end the summer. - Jeannette Shambaugh

Last Fridays game against Santana was a rough one for the Mari-
ners (3-2) as they fell to the Sultans 21-35. Santana was able to
capitalize one some mistakes made by the Mariners, and that was
the difference in the ballgame. Senior QB Ben Munoz did have a
career high of 3 TD passes, 2 to Senior WR Nijal Collins and 1 to
Senior WR Josh Cooper. The game was tied at halftime, then the
Sultans ran the opening kickoff back for a touchdown and then the
Mariners fumbled deep in their own territory to give the Sultans a
short field.
Despite the loss, the players are maintaining a positive attitude and
look to show their resolve and improvement in their next contest against
San Ysidro on October 17th at 7PM (at Mar Vista).
The annual Bell Game against Southwest High School on October
10th has been cancelled as the Raiders had to forfeit due to injuries
and a lack of players. The Bell Game is a rivalry game between
Southwest and Mar Vista that was started in 1979 by Southwest
Head Coach RC Arciaga and Mar Vista Head Coach Nick Nicoloff. It
is the second longest trophy game in the Sweetwater District. This is
the first time that the game has had to be forfeited by either team.
Mar Vista has one the Bell Game the past six seasons as the Raid-
ers last win against Mar Vista was in 2007.

FCC UNANIMOUSLY NIXES SPORTS BLACKOUT RULE
The Federal Communications Commission on Tuesday unanimously voted to end a 39-
year-old regulation preventing cable and satellite providers from airing games blacked
out on local broadcast channels.
It is the commissions job to serve the public interest, not the private interests of team
owners, Commissioner Ajit Pai said.
The NFL had argued that the rule which applies to all pro sports teams, but most
impacts football was necessary to keep fans in stadium seats. (The league blacks
out games that do not sell out, ostensibly to keep broadcasts from giving the impres-
sion the sport is unpopular.) Yet the rule was originally imposed when the league made
most of its revenue from ticket sales. So critics argued, and the FCC agreed, that the
rule was outdated now that enormous TV deals have become significant moneymakers
for pro leagues and teams.

support of the community an event of this magnitude would not have been
possible. There were many local favorites and some of the hardest fought
out heats of the day. The Menehune Division (11 and under) were a crowd
favorite, even if these guys are small they had some huge scores and some
great skills! The event is held in honor of legendary Imperial Beach surfer
and lifeguard Dempsey Holder and celebrates the need to preserve our
beaches and ocean. Coming together as a community and supporting our
local kids we are teaching them how to protect our environment while
respectfully using it. Dempsey Holder director Zach Plopper of Wildcoast
sums it up best All in all it was a super successful event. The kids and
adults were absolutely stoked to have ripable conditions and warm water
and surf in a super grassroots and community event. For a complete list

Josie is a female white and red 10 month old Chihuahua. This little girl is not
your average Chihuahua- she is not nervous, walks great on leash, and knows
her sit command. Due to her fragile size of 6 pounds, she does need to go to a
home without small children. Our special adoption fee of $25.00 for the month
of October starts on the 1st for all of our shelter dogs and cats.
The adoption fee includes these homeless pets being spayed or neutered,
microchipped, and currently vaccinated. If you are interested in Josie or any
other shelter pet, please contact the Adoption Counselor at 619-691-5174 or at

MAYOR OF
IMPERIAL BEACH
WHO'S RUNNING:
IMPERIAL BEACH CITY COUNCIL
WHO'S RUNNING:
2014 IMPERIAL BEACH
CANDIDATE FORUM
The purpose of the forum was to provide an opportunity for residents to
learn about our municipal governance philosophy and views on city issues
so that we may make an informed choice when we vote. This event was
held at the new gymnasium at Mar Vista High School off Imperial Beach
Blvd. on Thursday Oct 9th from 6pm-8pm. The timing and questions were
moderated by the League of Women Voters San Diego.
MAYOR JIM JANNEY
SERGE DEDINA
ERIKA LOWERY
COUNCIL MEMBER ED SPRIGGS JIM KING
COUNCIL MEMBER LORIE BRAGG
ELIZABETH SALDANA
According the The League of Women Voters, Thurs-
day nights turn out at Mar Vista High School Gym for
the Candidates Forum may have been a record turn-
out. People from all walks of life and all political per-
suasions attended the event sponsored by the League
of Womens Voters and the IB Chamber of Commerce.
Questions were written by members of the audience
and it was apparent that everyone was there for the
same reason; For the Love of Imperial Beach! While
different groups and different candidates may have
different views on what is and what should be; every-
one in attendance was there because of their Love for
VALERIE ACEVEZ
this Town and their concerns about the future of this
town they call home.
Because 3 council seats are up for election this cycle, it
is an especially important election for Imperial Beachs
future. 3 Council seats is a majority of City Council if
they vote together.
Depending which 3 are elected will determine the fu-
ture of Imperial Beach; for better or worse.
The Mayors race will require a clear majority of votes
as there are only two people running for the one Mayors
seat. The City Council Seats are quite another thing.
Because there are more than two candidates running for
each City Council seat, it will not take that many votes to
get elected as the votes will be diluted by a factor of 3.
That means if 34% of the votes cast could elect the next
majority of future City Council Votes. If all of the regis-
tered voters do not turn out and vote, it wont take very
many votes at all to become a City Council Person! That
is a big part of the reason so many concerned Imperial
Beach residents from all age groups and all walks of life
came to hear the candidates speak and answer some of
their questions Thursday night. No doubt there are many
more questions that citizens would like to hear answers

to but, they got a taste of the demeanor and candor of most of the candidates and
could see who was able to think and talk at the same time and learn a little bit more
about whether the candidates embrace the same policy and direction that the city
has been on or whether they might do things differently in the future.
Finding a balance between economic development of tourism and maintaining some
of that small town feeling at the same time came up several times. Several of the
candidates had opinions on what that balance might be like or if its even achievable
once development takes off? Many of the changes of the next 4 years will be irre-
versible and will impact Imperial Beach and the quality of life for decades into the
future. Most people in attendance were obviously concerned about the future direc-
tion that City Council for the next 4 years will pursue. Will it be more of the same or
something different? Will Imperial Beach be ruined by over-development or main-
tain its quiet beach town atmosphere? Will they still be interested in the individual voters
on the day after the election too? And just what does Classic Southern California Beach
Town really mean? It could be interpreted differently by many people.
Many of the candidates answers were direct, sincere and to the point; while some
others seemed to go back to selected talking points that may not actually have been
answers to the questions that were being asked at that time. Some of the candidates
seemed comfortable to answer questions frankly and directly while others read
speeches and quotes from other famous politicians or were obviously quite nervous
and uncomfortable. Some answers seemed more sincere than others that sounded
rehearsed or scripted.
Incumbent Jim Janney was a City Councilman for 4 years and has been the Mayor
for the last 8 years.
Challenger Serge Dedina also is seeking the position of Mayor for the next 4 years.
Incumbent Lori Bragg has been on City Council for 8 years and seeks another 4 years.
Incumbent Ed Spriggs has been on City Council for 4 years and is seeking a second 4
year term.
Challenger Former City Councilman Jim King is seeking one of the 4 year term City
Council seats.
Challenger Erika Lowery is seeking one of the 4 year City Council seats.
Challenger Valerie Acevez is seeking one of the 4 year City Council Seats.
Challenger Elizabeth Saldana is seeking one of the 4 year City Council Seats.
One thing was clear. All of the candidates for office Love Imperial Beach and so do all
of the public that was in attendance. Although they may perceive reality differently,
they all love Imperial Beach deeply.
It would be difficult to claim that anyone was a winner or a loser of the debates as they
were not really debating but, rather fielding questions from the voters in the room. The
real winners and losers will be decided November 4th at the polls. Imperial Beach is at
an important crossroad in its history and if all registered voters do not come out and
vote, then perhaps not the best people could win. If you and your neighbors dont
vote, then you have no right to ever complain about anything that the City does to you,
your family, your business or your livelihood in the future. This election provides
choice of continuing the same course and policies that have led Imperial Beach to this
point in history, or to bring in fresh blood and perhaps redirect the trajectory of Impe-
rial Beachs future. The representatives you elect will decide that future for you.
You probably know at least one person who attended Thursday nights forum that can
better tell you their impressions and opinions of the candidates. We encourage all running
for office to advertise in our next pre-election edition so that they can be sure that thought-
ful voters will know exactly what they stand for and why they are running for elected
office. And dont forget to vote November 4th! The Town you save may be your own!
(For the Love of IB Contd)
January 2014 the State Department of Finance approved the sale of these parcels that were formerly
the Miracle Shopping Center to Sudberry Development for approximately $275,000.
While its too late for this election cycle and will likely be too late by the time the next election cycle comes
around but, shouldnt Imperial Beach have voting precincts or districts so that each neighborhood has a
representative on City Council? Historically people that live near the beach have dominated previous City
Councils. Many of the neighborhoods that are in the redevelopment crosshairs have never been represented
adequately on City Council. Whoever gets elected to Council this election cycle should embrace either an
agenda item or referendum item to designate geographic voting districts or precincts. Each City Council Seat
should represent a particular neighborhood and the Mayor (Tie-Breaking Vote) could come from any of
those districts. What do you think?

OR
DISTRICTS?
