Abstract
We have been given the task to design a emergency shelter that is biodegradable, compact to
transport, waterproof, easy and quick to construct and durable enough to last 3years in a
harsh environment and manufactured using honeycomb cardboard.
Our design uses the principles of Tensegrity and Oragami to provide a large, strong and folda-
ble construction. This also allows us to transport the material in a compact way, fitting 4 shel-
ters on each europallet means many shelters can be transported rapidly to refugees. They can
simply unfold theyre shelter, constructing it easily within 3-5 hours.
Its very important the shelter doesnt leak, damp environments are synonymous with the
spread of disease and illness in refugee camps, so we are using a completely natural waterpro-
of coating derived from proteins found in mussels. The flooring is made of the material dural-
mond a composite derived from crushed almond shells mixed with resin.
