THURSDAY, OCTOBER 30, 2014
Jim
Hagedorn
Office sought: U.S. Con-
gress; Minnesotas First
District
Home city: Blue Earth,
Minnesota
Family: Single
Occupation: Steuart
Laboratories, Mabel, Min-
nesota (leave of absence)
Previous experience:
Congressional Relations
Director, U.S. Bureau of
Engraving and Printing
Director, Legislative and
Public Affairs, U.S. Finan-
cial Management Service
Legislative Assistant, 7th
District Minnesota Con-
gressman Arlan Stange-
land
Why are you seeking
office? I am running for
Congress because these
are critical times for our
nation and we must move
in a new direction to re-
claim our country. The
Big Government failures
of President Obama, voted
for by Rep. Tim Walz, are
hurting our nation, busi-
nesses and people. Obam-
acare, excessive regula-
tion, skyrocketing debt and
open borders/immigration
chaos threaten our future
and American way of life.
I favor solutions based
upon limited government,
free enterprise and the rule
of law solutions to take
power from Washington,
D.C. and return authority
to the States and American
people.
What are the most press-
ing issues facing your dis-
trict today and how would
you address them? We
must sustain family farm-
ing, a strong agricultural
community and our rural
way of life. Costs for farm-
ers are on the increase,
while commodity prices
are low far below cost of
production. When farmers
suffer, rural Minnesotans
and Main Street businesses
also feel the pain. To help
farmers, and all Ameri-
cans, I favor repeal and
replacement of Obamacare
with free market reforms;
energy independence and
construction of the Key-
stone Pipeline; repeal of
Dodd-Frank, regulatory
reform to stymie excessive
EPA regulation; securing
Americas borders and pro-
viding veterans the same
quality, timely medical
care as Congress.
Why should people vote
for you? The choice in
this election is between
Tim Walz, a liberal who
has sided with President
Obama on all the key is-
sues, and Jim Hagedorn,
a conservative who be-
lieves Washington, D.C.
has become too big and
powerful. Congressman
Walz will continue the poli-
cies of President Obama
Obamacare, cap and trade,
open borders/immigration
chaos, skyrocketing na-
tional debt and veterans
failures. Meanwhile, I
will serve as a check on
President Obamas power
and will help lead our na-
tion in a new direction, one
that takes power form the
Washington politicians and
bureaucrats and returns it
to the States and the Amer-
ican people.
Tim
Walz
Office sought: U.S.
Representative, Minne-
sota 1st District
Home city: Mankato
Family: Wife, Gwen;
two children
Occupation: U.S. Rep-
resentative, Minnesota
1st District
Previous experience:
High school teacher,
football coach and 24-
year veteran of Army
National Guard retiring
as a Command Sergeant
Major
Why are you seek-
ing office? I am run-
ning because I believe
Americas best days are
ahead and that if we
focus on working to-
gether and with com-
mon purpose, there are
so many things we can
accomplish in southern
Minnesota and across
this country. Whether it
is working with southern
Minnesota producers
and consumers to pass a
Farm Bill that works for
us or pushing for critical
investments in education
and infrastructure across
the district, I know what it
takes to pull people togeth-
er to get something done.
And if given the honor and
opportunity to represent
the 1st District again, I will
continue to work as hard as
I can to do the important
work and get things done
for southern Minnesota.
What are the most press-
ing issues facing your dis-
trict today and how would
you address them? My top
priorities included a focus
on growing our economy
and creating good-paying,
middle class jobs; ensur-
ing our veterans have the
care and benefits they have
earned and deserve; and
making important and nec-
essary investments in edu-
cation and infrastructure. I
am also working, now that
the Farm Bill has passed, to
make sure that it is imple-
mented in a way that helps
our producers operate as
efficiently as they can to
continue to feed, clothe and
fuel the world. To accom-
plish these goals, one must
be able to build coalitions
and bring members of both
sides of the aisle together
to get things done and
thats how I would tackle
these challenges.
Why should people vote
for you? I have worked
very hard to represent
the 1st District as best I
can, whether it was pass-
ing a Farm Bill that works
for southern Minnesota
or fighting to make sure
our brave veterans get
the care and benefits they
deserve. There is no doubt
that there is more work to
be done. But I am ready, if
elected, to get back to work
and reach out to members
of both parties on behalf
of southern Minnesota.
We are leading the way,
whether it is our agricul-
ture, medicine or educa-
tion. And I humbly ask for
your vote so that I can con-
tinue to be a strong voice
for southern Minnesota in
Congress.

Hamilton
Office sought: Min-
nesota House of Repre-
sentatives
Home city: Mountain
Lake
Family: Lynee (mar-
ried for 25 years), Son
Tyler 23, daughter Hal-
ey 20
Occupation: Pork Pro-
ducer
Why are you seek-
ing office? The reason
I am running for office
hasnt changed from
when my family and I
initially decided that
I should seek office. I
believe in the wisdom
that the world is run
by those who show up.
A person can either sit
back and complain or
get involved I chose
to be involved. I hope
that my involvement
will provide my chil-
dren and yours a better
opportunity for them
to define success, and
achieve it. I believe it
is governments role to
provide people with op-
portunities but then it
is up to the person to seize
that opportunity.
What are the most press-
ing issues facing your dis-
trict today and how would
you address them?
Jobs and economic de-
velopment remain major
concerns for our region.
We need to promote and
assist our businesses in
any way we can. We have a
great number of outstand-
ing businesses in south-
western Minnesota. To me,
instead of chasing after one
company that may or may
not want to relocate here, I
think were better off ask-
ing our existing business
owners how we can help
them grow. Theyre already
operating successfully and
employing our residents, so
how can we help them build
on that success? Its under-
stood that infrastructure
improvements, such as bet-
ter roads, broadband and a
well-educated workforce,
are part of that equation.
But what else can our state
do to help their business
grow? Answering this ques-
tion could lead to spinoff
businesses, and more em-
ployment opportunities for
our local workforce.
The state legislature
must do a better job of sup-
porting Greater Minnesota.
Witness the current struc-
ture of Minnesota House
Democratic leadership.
Out of 29 positions, 25 are
from the Metro Area or in-
ner cities. Does it surprise
anyone that we have ineq-
uities in funding and rural
Minnesota continues to get
the shaft?
Why should people vote
for you? I listen to the folks
I represent and I go after
what is right. Im not afraid
of a fight at the Capitol, and
Im not afraid to stand up
to my party and state my
opinion if it means putting
constituents first.
Ive proven I am able to
bring people together and
work with all sides. As a
member of the minority
party I was able to secure
funding for the Lewis and
Clark Rural Water Project
as well as Highway 60, so I
have a proven track record
of accomplishments during
times of Republican and
Democratic House control.
I also have one of most
bipartisan voting records
of anyone at the Capitol.
Not a single Democrat has
a more bipartisan voting
record than I do.
Cheryl
Avenel-Navara
Office sought: MN State
House of Representatives
District 22B
Home city: Worthing-
ton, MN
Family: Spouse: Ray-
mond (Pete) Navara, one
daughter, son-in-law, 3
grandchildren
Occupation: I retired
after 30+ years as a coun-
selor/faculty member at
Minnesota West Commu-
nity and Technical College
(Worthington Community
College). Currently I am
an ACTIVE volunteer with
many community organiza-
tions.
Previous Experience: I
have no prior experience
in elected political office.
My experiences in working
with a variety of groups,
people, and organizations
have strengthened my
most important skills: lis-
tening effectively, negoti-
ating, collaborating, teach-
ing, and working as a team
member. I am able to reach
out to those who know
more than I do on an issue,
sift through the informa-
tion provided, and come to
an informed conclusion. I
am an avid reader and do
my homework on questions
and issues. As a member
of negotiation teams and
a representative on joint
labor management teams
I have learned a lot about
working with people from
opposing viewpoints and
have had many opportuni-
ties to build these skills.
Why are you seeking of-
fice? I am running for this
office because I believe
that Southwest Minnesota
deserves a stronger voice
in the Minnesota Legisla-
ture. I also believe that we
cannot look at issues as we
have in the past: which I
see as a I am right, You
are wrong approach. I
will bring a collaborative
approach to problem solv-
ing. I believe that Legisla-
tors must listen to their
constituents, be available
to them in their own com-
munities, and represent all
of them, not just those they
agree with.
What are the most press-
ing issues facing your dis-
trict today and how would
you address them? Pay
employees a living wage.
Good-paying jobs move
the economy forward. The
more working people earn,
the more they spend and
the more that comes to the
state budget in the form
of taxes.
Develop a comprehen-
sive, balanced, long term,
transportation plan. To do
this, we need a funding
mechanism that is equi-
table for all who use our
transportation systems.
Provide housing oppor-
tunities. In order to attract
businesses, young families,
and young singles, we must
provide quality housing
that is affordable.
Education funding. This
includes early childhood
education (which returns
$16 for every $1 invested),
all day every day kinder-
garten and primary and
secondary education.
Continue the tuition
freeze in effect for all MnS-
CU institutions and the
UofM. We also must ade-
quately fund state post-sec-
ondary educational institu-
tions since it is estimated
that 70% of all jobs will
soon require some type of
post-secondary education.
Why should people vote
for you? I will provide a
NEW, STRONGER voice

titioner and a Nurse Edu-
cator
Previous experience: I
have never run for public
office prior to this time. I
do have a broad health care
background. My previous
work experience as an
Administrator in a multi-
million dollar Regional
Home Care Company gave
me excellent business op-
portunities. I managed
budgets, negotiated con-
tractual agreements with
payers, and assured cost/
benefit analysis for mul-
tiple home care client re-
ferrals
Why are you seeking of-
fice? I am seeking this of-
fice to represent hard work-
ing families and businesses
in Greater MN. Because of
my broad healthcare and
business background, I
believe I will bring expe-
rience and strength to the
Capitol. I want to problem
solve and continue to move
MN forward.
As an educator I under-
stand the value of a strong
education for our children;
I would like to collaborate
with business and schools
to train students and adults
so we can build our work-
force in Southern MN.
What are the most press-
ing issues facing your dis-
trict today and how would
you address them? Trans-
portation and Infrastruc-
ture are becoming sig-
nificant issues in Southern
MN. Unsafe roads and old,
dangerous bridges cause
great concern. Jobs and
Job training are very im-
portant. Assuring we have
the correct work force in
place to meet the demand
of local employers is criti-
cal.
Of course, because of my
background we must as-
sure that people are able to
find affordable, accessible
health care. Education will
always be a priority.
Why should people vote
for you? People should vote
for me because I am hon-
est, ethical, and straight-
forward. My Doctoral
Thesis was devoted to end-
ing incivility in nursing;
however, my work can be
generalized to all areas of
work. Incivility and disre-
spect lead to gridlock and
will not help solve prob-
lems. I pledge to work with
others respectfully and col-
laboratively.

wife and I own Fair-

I am a past president of
the Fairmont Chamber of
Commerce and was previ-
ously involved in Fairmont
Futures, Fairmont Growth
Opportunities, Salvation

Boards.
Why are you seeking
office? I would like to con-
tinue to be a strong voice
for our rural communities.
It has been a privilege to
serve my constituents, and
I have enjoyed helping citi-
zens navigate through the
state bureaucracy, answer-
ing their questions and
addressing their needs.
I have been able to help
provide jobs for our state,
but we still need more full-
time, better-paying jobs.
Many in our area are strug-
gling financially. I want to
make sure that government
spending is under control
and that our citizens are
able to keep more of the
money they earn rather
than allow government to
spend it.
If elected, what are your

Why are you seeking of-
fice? I was born and raised
in Jackson County and in
doing so it has created a
great living and working
atmosphere for myself and
family, With that being said
I have been considering
for the past few years, I
would place my efforts as
a commissioner to keep the
county moving ahead into
the future so others can
enjoy the benefits I have
received.
In working with many
individuals from different
businesses I understand the
importance of making
Jackson County a proud
area to live now and in
the future and feel Im
ready to help in any way.
What are the most
pressing issues facing
your district today and
how would you address
them? The most im-
portant issue I feel we
are facing is today is to
make sure we are get-
ting the best results we
can get for the dollars
we are spending. The
only way this can be
done is by being well in-
formed about all issues
and make the correct
decisions that benefit
the community. I will
educate myself by col-
lecting the information
I need to make qualified
decisions.
Why should people

daughter Kynlee.
Occupation: Full Tilt

Why are you seeking
office? I want to continue
doing the best I can for
Jackson County.
What are the most press-
ing issues facing your dis-
trict today and how would
you address them? In the
long term, we need to make
sure that services are in
place for an aging popula-
tion. At present, we need
to actively work with our
legislators on issues that
directly affect the County
and its residents.
Why should people vote
for you? The voice of the
people are heard at the bal-
lot box, if I have done my
job well and earned their
confidence then I should
have gained their support.
Kevin
Nordquist
Office sought: Jackson
County Auditor-Treasurer
Home city: Jackson
Family: Wife, Pam Nor-
dquist
Occupation: Jackson
County Auditor-Treasurer
Previous experience: I
have 8+ years of experi-
ence in the Jackson County
Auditor-Treasurers office
and have been serving
as the Auditor-Treasurer
for over 5 years. Prior to
working for the county, I
worked for 15 years as the
corporate Controller for 2
local Jackson businesses.
Why are you seeking of-
fice? As the primary stew-
ard of Jackson Countys
property tax dollars, I take
the position of Auditor-
Treasurer very seriously.
The duties of the Auditor-
Treasurer are very broad
and often go in many dif-
ferent directions. I serve
as the financial officer,
property tax administra-
tor, ditch administrator
and election administrator
among other duties. I feel
I have the experience to
pull these responsibilities
together in a cohesive man-
ner and offer the taxpayers
accuracy, accountability
and efficiency with their
tax dollars while providing
a high level of customer
service.
What are the most press-
ing issues facing your
district today and how
would you address them?
County ditch systems have
been a pressing issue for
the past few years. There
are 95 ditch systems in the
county of which most were
built in the early 1900s.
We have had interest arise
in improving or repairing
numerous systems recent-
ly. We have been working
together with landowners,
attorneys, viewers and
engineers to hold informa-
tional meetings and public
hearings in an effort to
keep the public as informed
as possible throughout the
process.
Why should people vote
for you? I have continually
looked for opportunities
to save money for the tax
payers of Jackson County.
Through sound financial
management practices, we
have been able to refinance
all of the counties debt at
lower interest rates. The
county received another
bond rating upgrade by
Standard & Poors in 2014
from AA- to AA. I enjoy
exploring these opportuni-
ties, making them happen
and will continue to do so
in the future.

portunities in the district.
I will be a representa-
tive who listens to you, re-
searches and collaborates
with others to reach a so-
lution that doesnt benefit
just one side.
I will be YOUR repre-
sentative, not one who is
beholden to special groups
but has the interests of
all the residents of 22B at
heart.
I will advocate for the
middle class and not the
top 2%. The middle class
is what we all aspire to,
where the jobs are, where
the jobs are created by
small businesses and en-
trepreneurs, and where
our growth will occur.

bridges are a concern.
Jackson is well on its way
to solving their housing
and infrastructure needs
with their 110-acre hous-
ing development and a
million-dollar grant for
multiple housing.
What are the most
pressing issues facing
your district today and
how would you address
them? Health care is a
great concern as many
have had their policies
cancelled and have been
unable to find coverage.
I have been contacted
by over 100 people who
were unable to find in-
surance. Delaying com-
pliance requirements for
small businesses would
help those who would be
facing employee insur-
ance concerns, but this
issue is a challenge for
Washington and unfortu-
nately cannot be solved by
our state. Another concern
is to maintain successful
schools. I feel we need
local control by teachers,
parents, administrators
and school boards, and
continue to work for equal
funding. Unionized day-
care is a real issue for the
businesses and industries
in Jackson and throughout
my district. It is now be-
ing decided by the courts.
Why shoul d peopl e
vote for you? My expe-
rience, leadership and
established relationships
with other legislators are
a valuable asset for our
district. I have been able
to bring jobs and new in-
dustries to our area, have
voted to keep taxes from
being raised on struggling
families, senior citizens
and businesses. I worked
to secure raises for long-
term care providers and
continue to work for fund-
ing equality between rural
and urban schools. I have
been a strong voice for
our area; I know how to
get things accomplished
in St. Paul, and would ap-
preciate your vote.

Occupation: Jackson
County Recorder
Previous experience: I
have over two decades of
valuable work experience
in the Recorders office
and have served as the
elected Jackson County
Recorder for 12 years.
Community involvement
or notable accomplish-
ments: I have served as
our elected District Board
Member to the Minnesota
Association of County Offi-
cers. I ensured the protec-
tion of precious historical
documents by converting
fragile microfiche to robust
digital records.
Why are you seeking of-
fice? I am seeking reelec-
tion as the Jackson County
Recorder because I wish to
continue to serve my fellow
citizens by protecting their
vital documents. I prom-
ise to continue delivering
outstanding service while
conserving our limited fi-
nancial resources.
If elected, what is your
top priority? My top priori-
ty is to continue to properly
and promptly process all of
the documents presented
for filing in our office while
continuing to provide effi-
cient and courteous service
to all of our customers at
current staff levels. What
are the most pressing is-
sues facing your district
today, and how would you
address them? [i] With re-
cent cuts in Local Govern-
ment Aid payments from
the State, the likelihood of
deeper cuts in the future,
and an ever-increasing
volume of documents pass-
ing through our offices,
processing more work at
current staff levels is an
issue. I will continue to
look for ways to perform
greater volumes of work
while maintaining cur-
rent staff levels, as with
cross-training with other
departments. [ii] We have
historical land records that
are maintained on media
that is degrading. I look
forward to the challenge
of transferring all of those
historical land records to
computer, thus preserv-
ing our past well into the
future.
Why should people vote
for you? I am a working
Recorder with an outstand-
ing record of excellent
service to the citizens of
Jackson County. I have the
experience, know how,
and attitude necessary to
examine and to properly
process all documents sub-
mitted to our office, to pre-
serve historical documents
on file with us, and to work
well with the public and
with staff in other depart-
ments. Through years of
experience, I have dem-
onstrated my commitment
to you and your vitally
important records while
acting as a good steward
of our shared resources.
Please vote for me on Nov.
4, 2014, so I can continue
to serve you as Jackson

Office sought: Jackson
County Sheriff
Home: Lakefield, MN
Family: Wife Jan, Son
Jerrod & Fiance Lindsay,
Grandson Paxton, Daugh-
ter Mara & Fianc Colton
Occupation: Jackson
County Sheriff
Previous Experience:
I have 31 years in law
enforcement. I began my
career in Aberdeen, South
Dakota. I spent a few years
as a patrolman for the City
of Lakefield and was then
hired as a deputy for Jack-
son County in 1989. In 2003
I was promoted to Patrol
Sergeant and in 2004 I ac-
cepted an appointment by
the Jackson County Board
of Commissioners to the of-
fice of Sheriff. I remained
unopposed in the 2006
and 2010 elections. I have
served as Jackson County
Sheriff for ten years.
Why are you seeking
office? I enjoy the chal-
lenges offered in the office
of Sheriff. The diversity
of day to day operations
within the Sheriffs Office
and assisting the citizens
of Jackson County is a re-
warding experience.
What are the most press-
ing issues facing your dis-
trict today and how would
you address them? Keep-
ing pace with technology
advances with a limited
budget is a very pressing
issue. Weve upgraded our
radio system and have
joined the states ARMER
network. I was proud to be
part of a team that gener-
ated 1.2 million dollars in
grants to Jackson County in
a 1.7 million dollar project.
The radio system not only
serves law enforcement
but fire fighters, EMS, and
First Responders from our
county and adjoining coun-
ties, schools, highway and
street departments, emer-
gency management and
county healthcare workers.
Weve upgraded our 911
System to next gen with
the aid of grants. This will
allow texting 911, stream-
ing photos and images to
Dispatch and pinpointing
911 callers to aid First Re-
sponders and law enforce-
ment.
There are, however, oth-
er projects such as updat-
ing our record keeping
system that is not grant
funded. I will continue
to look at cost effective
ways to provide the best
service to the citizens of
Jackson County.
Why should people
vote for you? I believe
in a no nonsense com-
mon sense approach
to law enforcement in
Jackson County. We
are a small county but
still deal with the same
crime and issues as
larger counties.
I will continue to pro-
mote a good working re-
lationship not only with
the citizens of Jackson
County but other county
and city departments lo-
cated within the county.
I will also promote this
same relationship with
other law enforcement
agencies surrounding
Jackson County. The
bad guys often win
when neighboring agen-
cies have tarnished re-
lationships and do not
cooperate with each
other.
The strength of the
Sheriffs Office lies with
its employees, whether
it is a bailiff, Jailer/
Dispatcher, Deputy or
support staff. I cant be
more proud of the staff
of the Jackson County
Sheriff s Office. I re-
main committed to serv-
ing the citizens of Jack-
son County and would
appreciate your vote.
COUNTY ATTORNEY
Office sought: Jackson
County Attorney
Home city: Moved to
Rural Alpha last summer,
prior to that we lived in
Jackson for over 10 years.
Family: Husband- Bran-
don Haley; Children- Mat-
thew, Ryan and Nicholas
Haley
Occupation: Assistant
Jackson County Attorney
Previous experience: I
have been the Assistant
Jackson County Attorney
since January 2003 (over
11 years). During that
time I also served as the
Acting Jackson County
Attorney for over a year
while Robert OConnor was
deployed to Iraq. Prior to
working and living in Jack-
son County, I worked for
Dakota County Attorneys
Office as a law clerk for
two years.
Why are you seeking
office? I have been serv-
ing Jackson County for
over 11 years while Rob-
ert OConnor has been the
County Attorney. He is
now retiring. He has been
training me to be his suc-
cessor for many years. I
have been preparing for
and looking forward to
serving Jackson County
as the County Attorney. I
enjoy the diversity of the
work I get to perform in the
County Attorneys Office;
no other legal practice is
quite like County Attorney
work. My husband, chil-
dren and myself are all
fully invested in the Jack-
son County community. I
am seeking the office of
Jackson County Attorney
so that our family can con-
tinue to enjoy all the ben-
efits of living in Jackson
County while I continue
to do the work that I love
to do. Of the candidates,
I have the most experi-
ence with the diverse type
of legal practice that the
County Attorneys Office
performs.
What are the most press-
ing issues facing your dis-
trict today and how would
you address them? Within
the County and Justice
work environments there
has been and for several
years will continue to be
quite a bit of change in em-
ployees due to retirements.
I have experience working
with every department of
the County. Through this
experience and working
relationships that I have
developed with each of
the departments, I will
assist the County with the
transitions that have been
made and are coming in
the years ahead. This in-
Sherry
Haley
cludes policy development,
training and legal advice
regarding these transitions
that I have fortunately
had the opportunity to
gain past experience with
while having the current
County Attorney available
for consult when needed.
The professional relation-
ships that I have developed
with law enforcement, hu-
man services, our schools,
and other entities with-
in the County enable me
work with these entities to
best address the changing
needs of our community
as well. I have experi-
ence conducting training
sessions within County
departments and the com-
munity.
Why should people vote
for you? I am experienced
in the very diverse areas
of law that the County At-
torneys Office handles.
During my 11+ years of
service in the County At-
torneys Office, I have al-
ways received very posi-
tive performance reviews.
This position is one which
not only requires legal skill
but also requires respect
for the community and
commitment, all of which
I have for Jackson County.
Both my husband and my-
self have chosen to raise
our family within this com-
munity. I have shown my
commitment to this com-
munity, not only through
my many years of service
in the County Attorneys
Office, but also through my
many years of volunteer
work within the commu-
nity. I am endorsed by the
current Jackson County
Attorney, Robert OConnor,
Sheriff Roger Hawkinson,
Lakefield Police Chief An-
drew Konechne and Heron
Lake Police Chief Tony
Fauglid based on their
prior work experience with
me.

For those of you who do not know me I am
a Conservative Christian with lots of Com-

more of these days. My wife (Kandee) and
I have owned the Earth Inn Motel in Jack-
son for the last 6 1/2 years. We also own
the consignment stores Its A Keeper and
Its a Keeper Too both downtown Jackson.
Over the years I have learned a little some-
thing about business. Give me a chance and lets see if we can get
Jackson moving and growing together. So heres the deal if you live
in Ward 1 of Jackson then I am asking you to vote for me this Nov 4.
But watch because I am running for the special election 2 year term
and my friend Mike Handevidt is also running for City Council the
difference is he is running for the regular seat. The ballot looks like
the two boxes below so cut out the lower portion of this and take with
you and then make sure you write me in on the proper line and Mike
in on the other line.

Office sought: Jackson
County Central School Dis-
trict Board Member
Home city: I was born and
go to church in Lakefield
and went to school in Jack-
son. I live on a farm about
equal distance from both
towns and consider each to
be my home town.
Family: I have been mar-
ried for 22 years to my wife
Shirley and we have two
daughters, Kate and Paige,
who graduated from JCC
and who presently are at-
tending college at South
Dakota State University
(SDSU) in Brookings South
Dakota.
Occupation: I am a prac-
ticing attorney with the
Handevidt & Anderson Law
Offices. We also operate a
small family farm.
Previous experience: I
graduated from SDSU with
a degree in Agricultural
Education. I graduated from
Hamline University School
of Law with a Juris Doctor-
ate. I have been a curricu-
lum advisor for Minnesota
West and taught portions of
its stenographer classes. I
have taught Sunday school
classes and participated in
various school informational
programs on legal and oc-
cupational pursuits. I have
been and am on various
boards including Jackson
County Central School Foun-
dation, Jackson County Law
Library, Jackson Economic
Development Corporation,
Kiwanis, Pheasants Forever
and have been asked to serve
on other boards. I represent
various corporations and
advise their boards. Our two
children were very active
in school and attended JCC
School. I was very involved
with the school and volun-
teered to assist in many ways
from chaperoning many
dances to working on fund
raisers.
Why are you seeking of-
fice? I want to make sure
that our communitys chil-
dren get a solid and well-
grounded education that will
prepare them for lifes chal-
lenges. A good educational
experience is important to
enable our children to be
productive members of our
community and responsible
family members. I also want
to make sure the taxpayers
hard earned income is spent
wisely.
What are the most press-
ing issues facing your dis-
trict today and how would
you address them? We need
to make sure the school dis-
trict spends the tax payers
money wisely. We need to
make sure the children are
being provided appropri-
ate classes to prepare them
for life. We need to make
sure they are provided with
educational opportunities to
learn the current technology
they will face. We need to
make sure the children get
the kind of education that
will enable them to figure
how to find the answers to
the problems they will face
in life.
Why should people vote
for you? I believe that my
experience serving on vari-
ous boards and represent-
ing boards and their board
members as their legal coun-
sel will help make me an
effective board member. I
believe in making up my
own mind and voting accord-
ingly and not in following the
crowd. I believe in making
decisions grounded in fact
and good common sense. I do
not believe we have to spend
money just because we have
it. I believe our children are
not only our responsibility
and future but they also can
be our downfall if we do not
prepare them to earn a good
living and be responsible to
and for their families and
community.

Why are you seeking of-
fice? I believe that the JCC
School District is an impor-
tant foundational element of
our community; this is an op-
portunity for me to serve my
community and give back to
a school system from which
I graduated.
What are the most press-
ing issues facing your dis-
trict today and how would
you address them? Sound
Financial Stability: It is im-
portant to me that the dis-
trict continually strives to
get the maximum value for
its funding. I would question
and ensure that the board is
looking at all options when
making financial decisions.
Continued Excellence of
its Educators: JCC has a
talented staff; I want to help
ensure that we retain these
great teachers and make
JCC a place that educators
want to be a part of.
Administrational excel-
lence and accountability to
the community: As repre-
sentatives of the entire JCC
community (Jackson and
Lakefield areas) the board
needs to strive for the high-
est quality of work and cali-
ber of service to custom-
ers of our school system. I
will not approve of anything
that does not fit in these pa-
rameters.
Why should people vote
for you? If elected, I will
be devoted to serving the
JCC School District to the
best of my ability. Honesty,
accountability and acces-
sibility are very important,
I will provide those things
if elected, as have our past
school board members. It
would be my honor to serve
our district if the community
would allow me that oppor-

on the strengths of the JCC
School system. This commu-

for our school and I want
to continue to do my part
to offer our kids the best,
most relevant learning op-
portunities.
What are the most press-
ing issues facing your dis-
trict today and how would
you address them? I be-
lieve the most pressing issue
for all schools continues to
be carefully allocating re-
sources to achieve our goal
of preparing students to live
and work in the 21st century.
We need to continue to offer
a broad range of coursework
and experience that will
help our students prepare
for jobs that do not even ex-
ist today (especially in the
areas of science, technology,
engineering and math). We
can help our students be-
come critical thinkers and
lifelong learners! As your
school board member I will
continue to do my part to
make sure all teachers have
the support in place to offer
our kids high quality learn-
ing experiences.
Why should people vote

decisions. As a parent, I

families face and will re-

for our kids. As an educa-
tor, I strive to support and

Previous experience: I
have had the privilege of
serving on the JCC School

I have worked for several
different financial and
governmental entities
as well.
Why are you seeking
office: To ensure that,
we as a school district,
are providing and using
the best resources pos-
sible and equipping our
students with the tools
they need to succeed in
their future. We must remain
fiscally responsible with the
resources that are allocated
to operate our school district
effectively.
What are the most press-
ing issues facing your dis-
trict today and how would
you address them? The cur-
rent issues that our school
district will be addressing
are:
Th e Co mmo n
Core program: I am study-
ing and monitoring the
Common Core program
and issues carefully. Watch-
ing for possible legislative
changes.
Transgender high
school student athlete: Pres-
ently, the Minnesota State
High School League is con-
sidering implementing a
controversial policy. This
protocol will provide an op-
portunity to the transgender
student to participate in
high school athletics and to
provide them with special
accommodations/facilities.
If this policy is passed by
MSHSL, many questions
must be answered. Will this
policy provide an unfair ad-
vantage for the transgender
athlete? How will this policy
affect all other high school
athletes? What unforeseen
issues will be created with
this type of policy for the
coaches and the district?
What is the overall cost for
implementation of such a
policy? How will this trans-
gender policy merge with
the Safe and Supportive
Schools Act?
Progress of the
IPAD Initiative and the Flex-
ible Learning Year.
Why should people vote

communication between
parents, community, and
board members. I base my
vote on facts. I do the re-
search, seek council, and
try to make the best decision
possible for the betterment

Heron Lake-Okabena com-

recently becoming a Sunday

a director on the Windom
Area Chamber of Commerce
where I previously served
as treasurer, vice chair and
chair in the 6 years that I
have been on the board.
Why are you seeking of-
fice? I enjoy being involved
and am looking forward to
helping my community in
any way that I can. I feel that
community involvement is
the key to our future.
What are the most press-
ing issues facing your dis-
trict today and how would
you address them? I believe
that there are many issues
facing any school district
today. One of these issues
that I think that we need to
work on would be to keep
our enrollment numbers up.
I think we first would need
to look at our past and find
the reasons for the fluctua-
tion and then possibly com-
pare with other districts to
see what they are doing to
maintain their enrollment.
Budget is also an issue, but
I think that is common ev-
erywhere. Keeping a watch-
ful eye over the budget and
seeking out our best finan-
cial options would be one of
the best ways to continue to
address the issue.
Why should people vote
for you? I hope to become
a voice for the members of
our community and to work
together to become the best
school district that we can
be. I believe that community
is important and the more
involved we are, the better
off we all are. I have previ-
ous experience with board
involvement including the
Heron Lake Okabena Com-
munity Foundation and the
Windom Area Chamber of
Commerce. I feel that I will
be able to see all sides of the
issues that come up to be ad-

Why are you seeking of-
fice? I believe the District
should provide an environ-
ment that gives all students
an opportunity to attain their
maximum potential
What are the most press-
ing issues facing your dis-
trict today and how would
you address them? The de-
clining student enrollment
numbers of the district are
one of the most pressing is-
sues the district faces.
Our school is the focal
point of our communities of
Heron Lake and Okabena.
The school district and our
communities need to partner
together to develop a plan
to attract families and past
graduates to settle and raise
their families in our district.
The school district needs to
provide a well-rounded edu-
cational environment to be
the focal point for communi-
ty growth. The District needs
to continue to look outside its
boundaries for opportunities
to share resources with other
districts.
Why should people vote

forts on keeping the District
a viable educational experi-
ence for the area students. I
will be respectful to district

that best support student

Previous experience: I
have been a member of the
Okabena City Council for
the past 3 years, currently
serving as Mayor.
Why are you seeking of-
fice? To continue the good
things that have been hap-
pening in Okabena and
to give back to the com-
munity.
What are the most
pressing issues facing
your district today and
how would you address
them? The Council re-
cently enacted a nuisance
and blight ordinance in
Okabena to maintain the
quality of our town.
Why should people vote

downtown a better place.
Why should people vote
for you? I have had 4 years
of experience as Mayor and
have learned a lot in these
last years. I have always lis-
tened to all the concerns and
issues any one has brought
up to me. The hardest part is
there is no way to make ev-
eryone happy. I want Jack-
son to be a place that we
can feel safe and great place
to raise our families. By
working together we have
made improvements and
still working on the many
improvements to be made.
We have a great council and
various volunteer commit-
tees that all work together
in trying to solve the issues
before us.
address them? I believe that
all issues brought before the
city council are important
and must be given equal
consideration.
Why should people vote
for you? I take this position
very seriously. I listen to
and study the information
presented. I then form an
opinion that I believe to be
in the best interest of the
citizens of Jackson. I be-
lieve that I have proven to
be consistent in my voting
on the issues over the past
two years.
already have within, our
citizens.
Why should people vote
for you? Essentially I am
apolitical, always stating
that Im a tea drinkin,
independent republicrat,
openly admitting that I may
not always strictly adhere
to being politically cor-
rect. My basis for decision
is drawn from a culmina-
tion of fact, need and com-
mon sense thinking, not to
mention considering the
voice of those who share
our community calling it
home. Forward thinking is
a desired trait with which
to keep a community, busi-
ness, organization and most
certainly life one step ahead
of falling behind; keeping
an open mind toward posi-
tive change can make all
things possible. Confront-
ing numerous issues facing
families every day is what I
do and I work hard to find
resolve. A community is not
that different from a fam-
ily, just larger in scope with
many similar concerns. I
firmly believe in community
involvement and commu-
nity action, WE are all part
of this community thus WE
ARE JACKSON!
If elected, what is your top
priority? I am seeking anoth-
er four years on the council
to work on infrastructure
(roads, sewer, water lines).
At the present time there
are many other issues facing
Jackson and I know that I
will make a difference.
What are the most press-
ing issues facing your dis-
trict today and how would
you address them? New wa-
ter and sewer lines and up-
grades. Updating the map-
ping of the electrical system
in Jackson. Housing, new
businesses. We also need
grants for funding.
Why should people vote
for you? My background
in electricity, EMS and my
background on the city coun-
cil will help me carry out my
duties as alderman in the
building of a stronger com-
munity.
