The Crimean crisis is an ongoing international
crisis involving Russia and Ukraine. Most
developments apply to the Crimean peninsula,
formerly a multiethnic region of the Ukraine
composed of the (now defunct) Autonomous
Republic of Crimea and the administratively
separate municipality of Sevastopol; both are
populated by an ethnic Russian majority and a
minority of both ethnic Ukrainians and Crimean
Tatars. The demographics of Crimea have
undergone dramatic changes in the past
centuries.
[a][b][c][41]

The crisis unfolded in late February 2014 in the
aftermath of the Ukrainian revolution, whenafter
months of protests by Euromaidan and days of
violent clashes between protesters and police in the
Ukrainian capital of Kievthe Ukrainian
parliament held a vote to impeach the President of
Ukraine, Viktor Yanukovych.
[42][43]
However the
vote failed to reach the three-fourths majority
required to impeach a President according to the
Constitution of Ukraine.
[44][45]
Russian President
Vladimir Putin said President Yanukovych was
illegally impeached and that he regards him as
Ukraines legitimate president.
[46][d]
This was
followed by the interim appointment of the
Yatsenyuk Government as well as the appointment
of a new Acting President of Ukraine, Oleksandr
Turchynovseen by Russia as "self-proclaimed"
in a "coup d'etat".
Beginning on February 26, pro-Russian forces
gradually took control of the Crimean peninsula.
Russia claimed that the uniformed men were local
self-defense forces, but they are widely believed to
be Russian military personnel without insignia
]

Several days later, on March 11, after
disagreements between Crimea, Sevastopol, and the
newly appointed interim government in Ukraine,
the Crimean parliament and the city council of
Sevastopol adopted a resolution to show their
intention to unilaterally declare themselves

possibility of joining the Russian Federation as a
federal subject.

A TRAGIC DEATH : On 2 September 2013, a four year old
boy was eaten alive by a stray dog in the proximity of a park
in Bucharest. The event has caused an instant outcry in the
Romanian society. His death led to a series of changes in the
legislative framework that allowed the euthanasia of stray
dogs in an easier manner. The child was playing together
with his six year old brother, away from adult supervision.
The two children were playing near private property, when a
pack of dogs suddenly attacked the young boy. Since there
were no adults around, his six year old brother ran away to
get help from his grandmother (the woman was looking after
them). By the time the grandmother arrived at the scene
together with the police, the boy was found dead and
disfigured in a bush. Two days later, it was revealed that the
dog that bit the child was registered to an animal rights
NGO. The reactions to his death were almost unanimously
that of shock. The accident has been listed as breaking news
on news channels in Romania for multiple days. Protests
have been organized - both in favor and against- the stray
dogs euthanasia laws. The President of Romania urged the
legislature to establish a set of laws urgently. The Prime
Minister of Romania has stated that he will support the Stray
Dogs Euthanasia Law. As a result of the death, an
investigation has been started; those who will be pronounced
guilty by a court of law will be sanctioned according to penal
law.

Music

Tomorrowland is a large electronic music festival held in
Belgium. It used to be organized as a joint venture by the
original founders, the brothers Beers together with ID&T,
subsidiary of SFX Entertainment. The festival takes place in
the town of Boom, Belgium and has been organized since
2005. It has since become one of the most notable global
music festivals. To celebrate the 10th anniversary of the
festival, and to meet the high demand for tickets, the 2014
edition of Tomorrowland will be held over two weekends;
1820 July and 2527 July. However, unlike the 2013 Ultra
Music Festival, which used a similar format and did have a

differing lineup of performers in its two weekends, plus a
array of other events across Miami during the week in
between, the lineup of both weekends will be "more or less

Film&Literature

Our redactors have done their best to review not only one of the most
popular films launched in 2013, 12 Years a Slave, but also a novel written by De
Maupassant, named Bel Ami.

4

De Maupassant's second novel, Bel-Ami (1885) is the story of a
ruthlessly ambitious young man (Georges Duroy, christened ''Bel-
Ami'' by his female admirers) making it to the top in fin-de-siecle
Paris. It is a novel about money, sex, and power, set against the
background of the politics of the French colonization of North
Africa. It explores the dynamics of an urban society uncomfortably
close to our own and is a devastating satire of the sleaziness of
contemporary journalism. Bel-Ami enjoys the status of an authentic
record of the apotheosis of bourgeois capitalism under the Third
Republic. But the creative tension between its analysis of modern
behaviour and its identifiably late nineteenth-century fabric is one
of the reasons why Bel-Ami remains one of the finest French novels
of its time, as well as being recognized as Maupassant''s greatest
achievement as a novelist. Young, attractive and very ambitious,
George Duroy, known to his friends as Bel-Ami, is offered a job as
a journalist on La Vie francaise and soon makes a great success of
his new career. But he also comes face to face with the realities of
the corrupt society in which he lives - the sleazy colleagues, the
manipulative mistresses and wily financiers - and swiftly learns to
become an arch-seducer, blackmailer and social climber in a world
where love is only a means to an end. Written when Maupassant
was at the height of his powers, Bel-Ami is a novel of great
frankness and cynicism, but it is also infused with the sheer joy of
life - depicting the scenes and characters of Paris in the belle
epoque with wit, sensitivity and humanity.

12 Years a Slave is a 2013 British-American historical drama film
and an adaptation of the 1853 memoir Twelve Years a Slave by
Solomon Northup, a New York State-born free African American
man who was kidnapped in Washington, D.C., in 1841 and sold into
slavery. He worked on plantations in the state of Louisiana for
twelve years before his release. The first scholarly edition of
Northup's memoir, co-edited in 1968 by Sue Eakin and Joseph
Logsdon, carefully retraced and validated the account and
concluded it to be accurate. This is the third feature film directed
by Steve McQueen. The screenplay was written by John Ridley.
Chiwetel Ejiofor stars as Solomon Northup. Michael Fassbender,
Benedict Cumberbatch, Paul Dano, Paul Giamatti, Lupita Nyong'o,
Sarah Paulson, Brad Pitt and Alfre Woodard are all featured in
supporting roles. Principal photography took place in New Orleans,
Louisiana, from June 27 to August 13, 2012. The locations used were
four historic antebellum plantations: Felicity, Magnolia, Bocage, and
Destrehan. Of the four, Magnolia is nearest to the actual plantation
where Northup was held. 12 Years a Slave received wide critical
acclaim, and was named the best film of the year by several media
outlets. The film won three Academy Awards: Best Picture
(becoming the first film made by a black director or producer to
receive the Academy's highest honor), Best Supporting Actress for
Nyong'o and Best Adapted Screenplay for Ridley. It was awarded
the Golden Globe Award for Best Motion Picture Drama, and the
British Academy of Film and Television Arts

Sony Announces Project Morpheus, A Virtual Reality
Headset For The PS4

And just like that, the Virtual Reality wars have begun.
Firing a shot across the bow of Oculus (the company responsible for getting many people excited about virtual
reality again, after the myriad flops of the 90s), Sony has just announced that theyre building a VR headset for
the PS4.
Sony is calling it Project Morpheus, for now a nod to the character from the Matrix, presumably.
Lest you think that Sonys just hopping on the VR bandwagon now that Oculus has sparked a bit of popularity:
according to Shuhei Yoshida, president of Sonys Worldwide Studios, theyve been tinkering with VR
prototypes ever since they started working on the Playstation Move back in 2009. Back then, though, they were
literally duct taping move controllers to their heads. In 2010, they created an internal group just for VR.
Yoshida was quick to point out that the prototype hardware, pictured above, isnt final.

Chelsea blew away Premier League title
rivals Arsenal inside 17 madcap minutes
at Stamford Bridge as Arsene Wenger's
1,000th game in charge turned horribly
sour and ended in a humiliating 6-0

6

defeat.

Jose Mourinho, who now boasts an 11-game unbeaten record
against his bitter rival, saw his leaders roar into a 2-0 lead after
just seven minutes courtesy of goals from Samuel Eto'o and the
outstanding Andre Schurrle. That was dramatic enough, but the
main talking point arrived soon after as Chelsea were awarded a
penalty when Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain dived to push an Eden
Hazard shot, which looked to be heading wide anyway, past the
post.Referee Andre Marriner took his time before awarding a spot-
kick and then brandished an inevitable red card, only to show it in
the face of a bemused Kieran Gibbs, who protested his innocence,
while replays appeared to show Oxlade-Chamberlain approach the
official to say: "Ref, it was me."
Marriner would not be swayed, leaving Gibbs with no option but
to trudge disconsolately down the tunnel, while Hazard kept his
nerve to convert down the middle of the goal after waiting for
Wojciech Szczesny to commit himself.Arsenal were never in the
game, such was their profligacy in possession, and once the
unfortunate Gibbs had been given his marching orders they were
simply in damage limitation mode, only for Oscar (two) and
Mohamed Salah to add further gloss to the scoreline before the
final whistle sounded.A warning of what was to come arrived with
only three minutes gone when Laurent Koscielny's poor pass only
found Schurrle, whose through-ball towards Eto'o was cut out by
Szczesny.Schurrle and Eto'o then combined to devastating effect in
the fifth minute, with the German feeding his forward colleague
after Arsenal ceded possession in the centre and the Cameroon
forward turned Oxlade-Chamberlain before curling a left foot shot
beyond Szczesny's despairing dive.Arsenal did not learn. They gave
the ball away once again in the middle and then allowed Schurrle
to advance unchecked to the edge of the box before he drilled a
low shot into a static Szczesny's bottom corner.Chelsea were forced
into an early change as Eto'o went down with what appeared to be
a hamstring injury and Fernando Torres was sent on in his place.
Marriner's moment of mistaken identity and Hazard's cool head
from 12 yards came soon after, with Wenger withdrawing Lukas
Podolski and sending on Thomas Vermaelen to shore up his
shambolic and shell-shocked side. The frenetic pace dropped
somewhat, although Szczesny had to be alert to turn a deflected
David Luiz drive round the post, and there was still time for Oscar
to make it 4-0 before the interval, clipping home Torres' low cross
from close range.Santi Cazorla fired a shot across the face of goal
on the hour mark, before Torres set up Oscar for a side-footed
effort which Szczesny had to leap to tip over his bar.But the
Arsenal goalkeeper was culpable in the 66th minute as he allowed
a routine Oscar effort from outside the box to skip up off the turf
in front of him to make it 5-0, with the Brazilian immediately
replaced by Salah. And the January signing got in on the act in the
71st minute, getting in behind the Arsenal defence to convert

Sony Open: Rafael Nadal knocks out Lleyton Hewitt in just 69 minutes in Miami
Rafael Nadal began his bid to win the Sony Open for the first time with a routine 6-1 6-3 victory over Lleyton Hewitt in the second
round in Miami. The world number one needed just 69 minutes to see off the veteran Australian who has not even taken a set off
his opponent since 2007. He never came close to breaking that barren run in Saturday's night match, his cause not helped by 24
unforced errors.
Nadal signalled his intentions with a break in the first game - he then went on to wrap up the first set after just 27 minutes with a
third break.Hewitt - who had registered his 600th win in the opening round of the tournament - did put up more of a fight in the
second, with neither player managing to create a break-point opportunity in the opening seven games.Eventually, though, Nadal
edged 5-3 in front before serving out for the match.
