A note on chapter and unit tests.

I realize that there seems a lot of testing in class and so I just wanted to add a
brief explanation. At the end of each chapter or unit in the various subjects we
have summative checks to see that the children have understood the material
they’ve covered. These periodic tests offer us insight into their progress and it
also serves to reinforce and solidify the information that’s been taught.

The school uses continuous assessment as a means of recording the students’

progress, so these chapter/unit tests contribute towards these marks. I’ll explain
more about this when the school report cards are ready for issue.

We do revise the topics before we test the children in them, so if you’re ever
feeling that you have too much on and can’t revise something with your child
that’s fine, as we do cover some revision in class.

I only notify in advance, and provide details of what’s happening, because

from my experience I know that there are some parents who do want to give
additional preparation at home. So rather than have someone feel that they
were unaware of what was happening in the class, I prefer to keep you all as up
to speed with what’s happening as I can.

I apologize if it seems burdensome at times, as a parent myself I realize the

time that can be spent in assisting your child at home. Thank you.

Maths End of Chapter 3 Test – Wednesday 30th December 2009

We will have the end of chapter 3 test on Wednesday, insha’ Allah. Please help
your son prepare for this by revising the skills found in the topics below with
him. The math’s homework book mirrors the lessons that we cover in class and
it is sufficient to use for preparing for the chapter test.

These topics are basically different strategies used for addition, so the key
point is to ensure that your son has at least one method that he’s confident in
for adding.

I have also put a copy of an example (not the actual test) of how the chapter
test will look on the class website in the math’s section.

Science Project

I’d like the children to design and make at home a poster or display showing
the life cycle of an animal or plant of their choice. This is based upon the work
we’re doing in chapter 4 of the science book.

I’d like these submitted for marking and display in the classroom on or
before Wednesday 5th January 2010.

Examples would be the life cycles of the frog or the butterfly. Where the child
draws and labels a picture of the animal at each stage and links them with
arrows to depict how it changes.

An alternative idea would be where the child draws the life cycle of a human
and includes a photograph of themselves as a baby, followed by a photograph
of how they look now, then a drawing of how they imagine they’d look at age
25 and another drawing of how they imagine they’d look at age 60.

Extra marks will be awarded for work that is clearly their own. I much prefer to
see that a student has tried to draw a picture himself than that an adult has
drawn it for him. Also, please note I don’t want work that is merely an exact
scan and print of a page from the book. I’d like to see that the children have
tried to find and assemble their own pictures or made drawings themselves.

Please ensure that their name is visible on the front of the piece. I thank you in
advance for your help and look forward to seeing some creative pieces.
